Youngstown St. Penguins vs Indiana St. Sycamores Predictions October 10, 2026

Game time: October 10, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Memorial Stadium (Terre Haute, IN) — Terre Haute, IN

Article updated Oct 7, 12:16 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Youngstown State will beat Indiana State 38-20, with the Penguins’ recent pass rush providing the strongest matchup reason to favor the visitors. Their five-sack performance against Southern Illinois points to trouble for a Sycamores offense that relies on productive passing. Still, Youngstown State -21.5 and the 64.5 total offer no compelling betting edge. The official SportsJaw recommendation is Pass.

Youngstown St. Penguins vs Indiana St. Sycamores prediction and best bet

Youngstown State gets the winner pick after a 28-16 victory at Southern Illinois on Oct. 3. The Penguins enter with stronger overall and conference records, and their defense generated both pressure and takeaways in that road win. That combination gives them the better case to control this Missouri Valley Football Conference matchup.

Indiana State has enough offensive production to complicate a large spread. Its passing yardage and red-zone scoring rate suggest the Sycamores can make Youngstown State work for separation. The forecast favors the Penguins by 18 points, but neither the underdog spread nor the Under earns an official wager. Best bet: Pass.

Youngstown St. Penguins outlook

Youngstown State’s defensive performance at Southern Illinois is its most persuasive recent result. The Penguins recorded five sacks, an end-zone interception and a sack-fumble. Ebony Curry Jr. contributed a career-high seven tackles and a strip sack, while Stanley Clyne made the interception.

Those plays show how Youngstown State can interrupt a scoring opportunity or end a possession abruptly. Repeating that disruption would be especially valuable against Indiana State’s passing attack. One strong afternoon, however, is a narrower foundation than a sustained season-long record of defensive dominance.

Jaden Gilbert supplies production as both a runner and receiver. Through the Oct. 6 preview, he had 249 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries, plus 19 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. That receiving contribution gives the Penguins another option if running lanes are limited.

Quarterback Beau Brungard scored a one-yard rushing touchdown to put Youngstown State ahead 14-10 in the third quarter at Southern Illinois. The Penguins now have an opportunity to reach 3-1 in MVFC play for the first time since 2016.

Indiana St. Sycamores outlook

Indiana State’s last two results show a substantial swing in scoring: a 42-35 loss to North Dakota on Sept. 26 followed by a 44-14 defeat at South Dakota on Oct. 3. The Sycamores demonstrated that they could score in the first game, but the second offers a clear warning about projecting that output forward.

Through six weeks, Indiana State ranked 26th in FCS passing offense at 258.0 yards per game. Freshman receiver Jayden Reed had four receiving touchdowns, including two in an eight-catch, 129-yard performance against North Dakota that earned him MVFC Newcomer of the Week.

Aaon Ball’s 6.10 rushing yards per carry adds another offensive consideration. Indiana State also ranked seventh in FCS red-zone offense with a 0.944 scoring rate. That figure measures scoring success, so it should not be treated as a touchdown rate.

The Sycamores ranked 26th in FCS rushing defense, allowing 125.0 yards per game. That is a useful counterweight to Youngstown State’s running options, although it sits alongside two recent games in which Indiana State allowed more than 40 points.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Youngstown State can disrupt Indiana State before its passing game produces scoring opportunities. The Penguins’ recent pressure supports that possibility. Reed’s production gives the Sycamores a credible response if they can get the ball to him consistently.

Red-zone possessions could carry unusual weight in the forecast. Indiana State has been effective at turning those trips into points, while Clyne’s interception illustrates how one defensive play can erase an opportunity. Neither result guarantees what happens Saturday, but their interaction helps explain the range of plausible margins.

Indiana State’s run defense also matters to the pace of separation. If it limits early rushing gains, Youngstown State may need to lean more on Gilbert’s receiving contribution and sustain drives without the benefit of takeaways.

Youngstown St. Penguins vs Indiana St. Sycamores spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Youngstown State -21.5 (-138) and Indiana State +21.5 (-125). The favorite needs to win by at least 22 points to cover, which exceeds the projected 18-point margin.

Indiana State +21.5 (-125) is the direction suggested by the score forecast. Its passing production and red-zone efficiency offer a route to staying within three touchdowns. However, the recent 30-point loss at South Dakota and Youngstown State’s disruptive defensive performance make that cushion less reassuring.

The Penguins are the stronger winner selection, but laying -21.5 (-138) requires a more emphatic result than this forecast anticipates. There is too much uncertainty around the margin to pay either supplied spread price.

Youngstown St. Penguins vs Indiana St. Sycamores total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 64.5 (-114) and Under 64.5 (-116). The projected 58 points suggest an Under direction, with Youngstown State’s pressure and Indiana State’s rushing defense offering reasons to expect some stalled possessions.

The counterargument is substantial. Indiana State’s last two games produced combined scores of 77 and 58, and its efficient red-zone offense could help scoring accumulate when drives reach threatening territory. Defensive disruption can also change field position and create quick scoring chances.

The forecast falls below the line, but these competing paths make the total too uncertain for an official Under wager.

Youngstown St. Penguins vs Indiana St. Sycamores projected score

Game forecast: Youngstown State 38, Indiana State 20. The Penguins’ stronger record, recent road victory and demonstrated ability to pressure the quarterback support the winner selection. Gilbert’s contributions in both offensive roles add to that case.

Indiana State’s passing production and red-zone scoring are the strongest counterarguments to a comfortable road win. Confidence is medium: Youngstown State has a supported edge, but the margin and scoring environment remain less convincing. Both spread sides and the 64.5 total are passes. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
