By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Columbia will beat Princeton 20-17, with Griffin Johnson's rushing production giving the Lions the strongest matchup advantage against a defense allowing 159.0 rushing yards per game. Princeton's defensive results point toward a close finish. Under 42.5 (-117) offers the best betting opportunity at the supplied price, although two-game samples keep confidence low. The spread is a Pass.

Princeton Tigers vs Columbia Lions prediction and best bet

Columbia has the offensive advantage entering this Ivy League opener: 477 yards per game against Princeton's 292.5. Johnson gives the Lions a productive runner to test the less impressive part of Princeton's defensive profile. The Tigers have allowed 159.0 rushing yards per game compared with 136.0 through the air. That is the clearest route to a Columbia victory.

The best bet is Under 42.5 (-117), with low confidence. Princeton's limited offensive output and strong scoring defense favor a restrained score, while Columbia's possession average suggests an ability to sustain drives. Still, the Lions have needed overtime twice. Their unbeaten record offers less reassurance about covering a short spread than it might initially suggest.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: Princeton Tigers at Columbia Lions, 2026 college football, Saturday, October 3, at noon ET.

Venue: Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium, New York.

Broadcast: ESPN+, with Lance Medow and Shawn FitzGerald.

Records: Columbia is 2-0 after consecutive overtime wins. Princeton is 1-1. Both begin Ivy League play.

SportsJaw odds: Princeton +1.5 (-144); Columbia -1.5 (-113). Moneyline: Princeton -102; Columbia +102. Total: Over 42.5 (-138), Under 42.5 (-117). These prices make the cost of each selection part of the decision.

Princeton Tigers outlook

Princeton's defense supplies its strongest argument for an upset. The Tigers allow 10.5 points and 295.0 yards per game, with three interceptions through two games. Their September 26 win over UAlbany was a 22-0 shutout, the program's first since 2021. Holding Columbia below its early scoring average is a plausible assignment for this unit.

That shutout also needs context. UAlbany gained 288 yards to Princeton's 265, and the Tigers forced three turnovers. Chase Christopher recorded eight tackles. The result shows Princeton can win without a yardage advantage, but repeating that scoring margin would require more than simply matching last week's offensive output.

The Tigers average 18.0 points, 180.5 passing yards and 112.0 rushing yards per game. Wyatt Becker has 301 passing yards and a 54.8 percent completion rate. He became Princeton's first freshman to start a season opener, throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown in that debut. Ethan Clark averages 45.0 rushing yards, while Josh Smith averages 54.5 receiving yards.

Kai Honda added 110 all-purpose yards and two rushing touchdowns against UAlbany. His contribution gives Princeton another scoring possibility, but the overall attack remains modest. Against Columbia's early pass-defense results, Princeton needs efficient possessions rather than assuming its defense can keep supplying takeaways.

Columbia Lions outlook

Columbia averages 30.0 points and 477 total yards per game, but its two overtime finishes show how little separation that production has bought. The Lions have moved the ball well enough to earn the forecast here. Turning those yards into a comfortable lead is a different challenge.

Johnson leads the Ivy League with 245 rushing yards through two games. He carried 30 times for 121 yards in the September 26 victory at Georgetown. Columbia averages 154.5 rushing yards and 34:52 of possession, which its official preview ranks third in the FCS. Johnson's workload gives the Lions an established option if Princeton makes passing difficult.

Chase Goodwin completed 23 of 50 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns against Georgetown. Columbia converted 10 of 18 third downs and outgained the Hoyas 431-234, yet needed Hugo Merry's 25-yard overtime field goal to win 20-17. Goodwin's completion total is a caution against treating that passing-yard advantage as evidence of consistently efficient execution.

Defensively, Columbia allows 123.0 passing yards per game, listed second in the FCS in the official preview. The Lions also recorded two sacks and two interceptions against Georgetown. Those results make Princeton's passing game an attractive matchup for Columbia, though two outings are too few to assume those defensive averages will hold.

Key matchup factors

The decisive question is whether Columbia can turn its rushing advantage into points without depending on another high-volume passing afternoon. A productive Johnson performance could help the Lions manage possession, but long drives still need successful finishes. Their Georgetown result is a reminder that a large yardage edge can coexist with a tight score.

Princeton's turnover production is the biggest threat to that plan. An interception could both interrupt Columbia's offense and ease the burden on the Tigers' own attack. Series history also favors Princeton, which has won 12 of the last 14 meetings. That history deserves less weight than current personnel and production, especially with Columbia winning the 2024 home meeting 34-17.

Princeton Tigers vs Columbia Lions spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Columbia Lions -1.5 (-113) and Princeton Tigers +1.5 (-144). Columbia is the winner forecast, and a three-point victory would cover. That narrow projected cushion is not enough to make the spread an official recommendation.

Both Columbia wins required overtime, while Princeton's defense gives the underdog a credible route to another close finish. Taking Princeton's points also requires paying -144. Neither price is compelling enough given the limited sample and uncertainty around how efficiently Columbia can finish drives. A projected cover alone is insufficient reason to bet.

Princeton Tigers vs Columbia Lions total prediction

Total recommendation: Under 42.5 (-117). Princeton's 18.0-point offensive average, its 10.5 points allowed per game and Columbia's early pass-defense results offer a combined case for restrained scoring. Columbia's possession profile adds a possible route to fewer opportunities, although possession time alone does not measure game pace.

The counterweight is substantial: Columbia averages 477 yards and 30.0 points, and both its games have reached overtime. Extra possessions would threaten the Under. Even so, the matchup favors a total below 42.5 enough for a modest lean at -117. Over 42.5 (-138) is a Pass.

Princeton Tigers vs Columbia Lions projected score

Game forecast: Columbia Lions 20, Princeton Tigers 17. Columbia's offensive production and Johnson's rushing give the home team the edge, while Princeton's defensive results argue for keeping the margin small. The strongest opposing case is that the Tigers force another set of turnovers and make Columbia's yardage advantage irrelevant.

Confidence is low because these profiles cover only two games apiece, and Columbia has yet to win without overtime. The projected 37 points fit the defensive matchup, but are an editorial estimate rather than proof of betting value. Under 42.5 (-117) is the single official SportsJaw wager. Both supplied spreads remain a Pass.
