Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs Idaho St. Bengals Predictions October 3, 2026

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 8:00 PM ET

Venue: ICCU Dome — Pocatello, ID

Article updated Oct 1, 3:04 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Idaho State will beat Northern Arizona 31-24, with its strong pass defense and productive offense providing the clearest matchup advantage. Northern Arizona's poor third-down conversion rate favors the Bengals, but its takeaway production threatens their margin. The supplied Idaho State -6.5 (-142) price leaves too little room for that uncertainty. Neither the spread nor the total offers a compelling wager; the official recommendation is Pass.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs Idaho St. Bengals prediction and best bet

Idaho State is the pick to win this 2026 college football matchup. The Bengals pair a Big Sky-leading 38.5 points per game with a defense allowing 17.0. That combination gives them an advantage over a Northern Arizona offense converting just 26 percent of its third downs.

Winning and covering require separate judgments. Northern Arizona leads the FCS with 14 takeaways and a plus-eight turnover margin, a meaningful threat after Idaho State's three-fumble game against Southern Utah. A projected seven-point victory offers little cushion at -6.5, particularly with the favorite priced at -142. The best betting decision is Pass, despite a medium-confidence forecast of an Idaho State victory.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Kickoff: October 3, 2026, at 6 p.m. Mountain, according to Idaho State's official preview.

Venue: ICCU Dome, Pocatello, Idaho. Broadcast: ESPN+.

Records: Idaho State is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky; Northern Arizona is 3-2 and 1-1. The Bengals have won eight consecutive games dating to last season.

SportsJaw spread: Northern Arizona +6.5 (+112); Idaho State -6.5 (-142).

Moneyline: Northern Arizona +235; Idaho State -320.

Total: Over 55.5 (-127); Under 55.5 (-127).

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks outlook

Northern Arizona's strongest weapon is its ability to take the ball away. Its 14 takeaways consist of seven interceptions and seven fumble recoveries. Those extra possessions offer a route to an upset even if Idaho State moves the ball more consistently. The Bengals' recent ball-security trouble makes that possibility particularly relevant.

Ty Pennington completed 87 of 143 passes for 1,047 yards and seven touchdowns through five games. Quran Gossett contributed 337 rushing yards and two 100-yard performances, while Kenveon Stone led NAU with four rushing touchdowns. Those players give the Lumberjacks options, but their production has not translated into dependable third-down results: NAU converted 16 of 61 attempts, last in the Big Sky.

Against this pass defense, avoiding repeated third-down tests becomes especially valuable. Gossett's rushing production offers one possible way to keep Pennington from carrying every possession. NAU also needs more after halftime, having been outscored 38-17 in third quarters.

The schedule adds another consideration: this is Northern Arizona's third consecutive road game and fourth road assignment in six contests. Its series history is encouraging, however, with four straight wins over Idaho State and victories in 14 of the past 15 meetings since 2005.

Idaho St. Bengals outlook

Idaho State's offense supplies a solid foundation for the home forecast. Its 38.5-point average ranks eighth nationally, and the Bengals have scored on 11 of 12 red-zone trips. Those are scoring trips, so the figure should not be read as a touchdown rate. Even with that distinction, avoiding empty red-zone possessions strengthens their case.

The running game contributed a season-high 244 yards in the September 26 victory at Southern Utah. Tytan Mason was averaging 9.2 yards per rush entering this matchup. That recent rushing output offers a reason to expect Idaho State to test NAU on the ground rather than place the entire offensive burden on its passing game.

The defense presents the more direct matchup advantage. Idaho State allows 144.0 passing yards per game, seventh nationally, and ranks third in pass-efficiency defense at 86.59. Jackson Irwin contributed nine tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and an interception against Southern Utah.

There are qualifications. That game finished 28-24, and coach Cody Hawkins highlighted three fumbles as a problem to correct. In his September 30 update, Hawkins expected the receiver group to be available for NAU, while noting that Jimmy had been managing injuries and playing limited snaps.

Key matchup factors

Possession quality is the central issue. Idaho State has the stronger scoring profile, but Northern Arizona can change the game without sustaining long drives if it produces takeaways. The Bengals need ball security to let their offensive advantage matter over four quarters.

The third-quarter contrast also favors Idaho State: the Bengals have outscored opponents 59-7 in that period, while NAU has been outscored 38-17. That suggests a possible opportunity for separation after halftime, although it is no guarantee of another strong quarter.

Series history pulls the other way. Northern Arizona's sustained success in this matchup deserves consideration, but Idaho State's current offensive and defensive results carry more weight in this forecast.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs Idaho St. Bengals spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Idaho State -6.5 (-142) and Northern Arizona +6.5 (+112). Idaho State has the stronger case to win, but the projected seven-point margin barely clears the favorite's line. Paying -142 requires more conviction in the cover than this matchup warrants.

NAU's takeaway production makes the underdog interesting at a plus price. Still, its third-down struggles against Idaho State's pass defense leave a substantial risk that the Bengals pull away. Neither side offers enough separation between the matchup forecast and the supplied spread.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs Idaho St. Bengals total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 55.5 (-127) and Under 55.5 (-127). The projected 55 points sit almost directly on the line, leaving no meaningful scoring cushion.

Idaho State's pass defense and Northern Arizona's third-down problems favor lower scoring. The Bengals' offensive production, recent rushing success and red-zone scoring rate point in the other direction. Turnovers could stop promising drives or create short scoring opportunities. With credible paths on both sides and the same -127 price for either direction, the total is best left alone.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs Idaho St. Bengals projected score

Game forecast: Idaho State 31, Northern Arizona 24. The Bengals' offensive production and pass defense should give them the steadier route to victory. Northern Arizona's takeaway ability keeps the projected margin competitive and gives the Lumberjacks a plausible way to exceed what Idaho State's defensive scoring average might suggest.

The strongest counterargument is that NAU turns the Bengals' recent fumble trouble into another game decided by extra possessions. Its series success adds caution, too. Confidence in the Idaho State winner forecast is medium, reflecting an ordinary edge with meaningful opposition. The spread and total are both Pass recommendations, and the single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
