Game time: October 3, 2026 at 10:30 PM ET

Venue: Mountain America Stadium — Tempe, AZ

Article updated Oct 1, 3:20 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Arizona State will beat Baylor, Arizona State 24, Baylor 20, with its defensive efficiency providing the strongest reason to favor the home team. Baylor’s four-game run of holding opponents below 20 points makes the Bears a difficult opponent to separate from. Under 49 (-110) is the strongest wager at the supplied price; neither side offers a clear spread edge.

Baylor Bears vs Arizona St. Sun Devils prediction and best bet

Arizona State gets the winner selection behind a defense allowing 4.68 yards per play through three games. Baylor’s first true road appearance of 2026 adds another challenge for the visitors, although the Bears’ defensive results suggest a close finish. The forecast is Arizona State 24, Baylor 20.

The best bet is Under 49 (-110). Arizona State’s 38.0-point scoring average needs context: it falls to 22.0 against FBS opponents. Baylor has held all four opponents below 20 points, while the Sun Devils have limited opposing third- and fourth-down conversions to 28.3%. Those results support a restrained scoring forecast, with enough uncertainty about the winning margin to pass on the spread.

Baylor Bears outlook

Baylor’s case starts with defensive consistency. The Bears beat Colorado 23-13 on September 26, extending their winning streak to three games and their run of holding opponents below 20 points to four. Baylor’s official preview identifies that defensive streak as its longest since 2005. It is the strongest reason to expect the visitors to remain competitive.

The Colorado performance also shows why yards alone can mislead. Baylor allowed 363 total yards but forced eight punts across 15 drives and made two fourth-down stops. Five sacks and 13 tackles for loss helped interrupt possessions. Repeating that disruption would put pressure on an Arizona State offense whose production has dropped substantially against FBS competition.

DJ Lagway supplied 221 passing yards and two touchdowns against Colorado. Dawson Pendergrass added 85 rushing yards on 16 carries. Those contributions give Baylor a plausible route to sustaining enough offense to threaten an outright win, particularly if its defense keeps the score manageable.

The new challenge is playing a true road game. Baylor’s Auburn opener was at a neutral site. Arizona State’s low opponent completion rate makes this a demanding setting for Lagway, but Baylor’s defensive form keeps the forecast close.

Arizona St. Sun Devils outlook

Arizona State’s defense supplies the foundation for the home-win forecast. Through three games, it has allowed 285.7 yards per game, including 161.3 through the air. Opposing passers have completed 52.4% of their attempts. Its 13 stops conceded as conversions in 46 combined third- and fourth-down attempts translate to a 28.3% conversion rate.

The competition split tempers those numbers. Arizona State has allowed 334.5 yards per game against FBS opponents. Its results include a 70-7 win over Morgan State, a 48-20 loss at Texas A&M and a 24-17 victory over Kansas in London. The Kansas game was a win after Arizona State built a 24-7 fourth-quarter lead, but the Texas A&M result illustrates the downside.

Cutter Boley has completed 53 of 84 passes for 736 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Against FBS opponents, he is 32-for-57 with three touchdowns and two interceptions, averaging 174.5 passing yards. That smaller, two-game sample deserves attention without becoming a fixed expectation.

Reed Harris provides the strongest offensive counterargument to the Under. He has 19 catches for 374 yards and five touchdowns, including nine receptions longer than 20 yards. Kyson Brown adds 227 rushing yards on 43 carries. Harris’ ability to gain yards in chunks gives Arizona State a route around Baylor’s pressure.

Key matchup factors

The key tension is Baylor’s recent pressure against Arizona State’s downfield potential. Sacks can end promising possessions; a Harris reception can quickly erase the field position gained by a defensive stop. That makes the timing of those plays especially important in a forecast separated by four points.

As of October 1, SportsJaw’s combined spread consensus favors Baylor at 59%, while its current community leader is Arizona State. The combined equivalent count is 355 Baylor selections to 246 Arizona State selections, using a modeled sportsbook sample blended with SportsJaw participation, not observed ticket totals. Over leads the total consensus at 75%. Those preferences oppose the Under recommendation, but they are not estimates of its probability of winning.

Baylor Bears vs Arizona St. Sun Devils spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Arizona State -4 (-105) and Baylor +4 (-110). The projected four-point margin lands exactly on the line, leaving no cushion for either selection.

Arizona State’s defensive efficiency and home setting justify picking it to win. Baylor’s four-game defensive streak makes laying four points less attractive, while Harris’ explosive production makes taking the points uncomfortable. A close-game forecast is not automatically a Baylor wager. Neither side has enough separation between its matchup case and the supplied spread to earn the official selection.

Baylor Bears vs Arizona St. Sun Devils total prediction

Total recommendation: Under 49 (-110). The projected 44 points leave five points below the line, but the wager rests on the defensive matchup and Arizona State’s FBS scoring split, not that arithmetic alone.

Baylor has repeatedly kept opponents below 20, and Arizona State’s conversion defense offers a reason to expect interrupted drives on both sides. The risk is meaningful: Harris has nine catches beyond 20 yards, and Arizona State’s FBS sample covers only two games. Even with those qualifications, Under 49 (-110) has the stronger case than either spread side.

Baylor Bears vs Arizona St. Sun Devils projected score

Game forecast: Arizona State 24, Baylor 20. Arizona State’s passing defense and Harris’ ability to produce long gains provide a narrow route to victory. The projection allows the Sun Devils to exceed what any of Baylor’s first four opponents scored, while still expecting the Bears to limit sustained offensive success.

Baylor’s defensive consistency is the strongest objection to the winner selection, and Arizona State’s uneven FBS results keep this from being a high-confidence call. Confidence is medium: the Under has several supporting indicators, but the samples remain small. Pass on both spread sides. The single official SportsJaw wager is Under 49 (-110).
