Game outlook

Alabama is on the road playing Houston at the Fertitta Center stadium on Saturday, 12/10/2022 @ 3:00pm EST. Houston -8.5 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

Houston will host the marquee matchup of the season this Saturday. A sold-out crowd is expected for the 8th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide's game against the #1-ranked Houston Cougars. Their only blemish was an 82-67 loss to then #20 UConn in the Phil Knight Legacy tournament. A four-overtime thriller followed the following night, when they beat then #1 North Carolina 103-101. Meanwhile, Houston is 6-0 at home this season and has yet to lose a game. Opening tap is scheduled for 3:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

The tide is rising

In addition to the four-overtime win over North Carolina, Alabama already has some quality wins under its belt. This season, they can make it two-for-two by knocking off #1 teams. The Tide improved to 7-1 with a 78-65 win over South Dakota State on Friday night. The Tide were led by Noah Clowney, who scored 22 points, including four three-pointers. The Tide won by 13 points with double-digit scoring from Mark Sears and Brandon Miller. While the team shot just under 40% from the floor, they won the rebounding battle 45-37.

With over 83 points per game this year, the Crimson Tide are outscoring their opponents by 15 points per game. Defense has been the Tide's strongest suit. The opposition is shooting just 36% overall and under 30% from 3-point range. Alabama makes five more three-point field goals per game than its opponents. Averaging 50 rebounds per game, they hold a nearly 14-point rebounding differential per game. With nearly 16.5 turnovers per game, Alabama has struggled to protect the basketball.

Ranking #1 in retro

In basketball, the Houston Cougars are ranked #1 for the first time since Phi Slamma Jamma. Since Hakeem Olajuwon roamed the paint for the Cougars in 1983, Houston has not held the #1 ranking. Coach Kelvin Sampson and his team are 9-0 this year, picking up where they left off last year.

The Cougars improved to 9-0 on the season despite losing star Marcus Sasser early in the game to an eye injury. Ja'Vier Francis had 14 points and Jarace Walker had 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars won easily. In spite of his limited appearance, Sasser scored 12 points. During the game, Houston held North Florida to just 31% shooting.

In the last three seasons, Houston has lost just three games at home. The Cougars will face their toughest test of the season, but they have the defense and relentless effort to defeat the Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide is not a particularly proficient shooting team and typically gains its advantage by dominating the glass. Alabama held a slight rebounding edge while shooting just 42% from the floor in their lone loss to UConn. Furthermore, they turned the ball over 21 times. Though UConn is a solid defensive team, Alabama has not seen the kind of pressure Houston can deliver. To maintain their edge, Houston will need to produce another 20+ turnover performance against the Cougars' relentless defense. This matchup will be decided by Houston's #1-ranked defense.

Alabama Highlights

With a power ranking of 30, Alabama is ranked #18 in offense (scoring an average of 83.50 per game), #177 in defense (allowing an average of 68.50 points to be scored against them per game) and are 7-1 (5-3 ATS) this season.

Houston Highlights

Houston Cougars has a power ranking of 13 and are #142 for offense (scoring an average of 74.75 per game), #1 for defense (giving up an average of 68.50 points per game) and 9-0 (7-2 ATS) overall. Alabama went 0-1 (1-0 ATS) in their last 3 matchups against Houston.
