Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes Predictions Today

Game time: October 2, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET

Venue: Lenovo Center — Raleigh, NC

Article updated Oct 2, 7:08 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The Carolina Hurricanes will beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in our forecast, with their seven successful penalty kills against Florida providing the strongest current matchup reason. That narrow edge comes with scoring concerns after Carolina's shutout loss. Neither the supplied puck-line prices nor the 6.5 total offers a strong enough betting case, so the official SportsJaw wager is Pass.

Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes prediction and best bet

Carolina gets the nod in this October 2 NHL matchup, but its opening performance points toward a close contest. The Hurricanes held Florida scoreless until the final seconds of overtime on September 29, killing all seven Panthers power plays. That gives Carolina an encouraging defensive result entering Washington's first game of the 2026-27 regular season.

The concern is at the other end: Carolina scored nothing and went 0-for-6 on the power play. Washington also expects Alex Ovechkin back after his preseason absence. Our forecast is Hurricanes 3, Capitals 2, with low confidence. At Carolina -144 and Washington +127, neither moneyline earns an endorsement. The official best-bet decision is Pass.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Goaltending: Pyotr Kochetkov's Thursday practice assignment suggested a possible Carolina start, without confirming it.

SportsJaw moneylines: Washington +127; Carolina -144.

SportsJaw puck lines: Washington +1.5 (-204); Carolina -1.5 (+174). Total: Over 6.5 (+106); Under 6.5 (-122).

Washington Capitals outlook

Washington's most important personnel development is Ovechkin's return. NHL.com reports that he is set to begin the season at left wing alongside Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard, while also joining the first power-play unit. His presence gives the Capitals access to last season's leading scorer: Ovechkin finished 2025-26 with 32 goals and 64 points and played every regular-season game.

His preparation is the complication. A lower-body injury kept him out of the preseason, and coach Spencer Carbery said his early deployment and minutes would be monitored. The forecast therefore gives Washington credit for his availability without assuming a full workload or immediate sharpness. Returning to the lineup and returning at peak effectiveness are separate questions.

The Capitals also added Boone Jenner, Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch during their roster retooling. Those additions make the opening game an early look at the revised group, rather than evidence of an established offensive improvement. Washington had been idle through the league's first three days.

The Capitals' clearest opening is Carolina's scoring trouble. If the Hurricanes again struggle to convert chances or power plays, Washington may need only a few successful possessions to take control. Ovechkin's recent production makes that counterargument credible.

Carolina Hurricanes outlook

The defending champions began with a 1-0 overtime home loss to Florida. Gustav Forsling scored the winner with 4.3 seconds remaining in overtime, leaving Carolina with one point after nearly 65 minutes without a goal. That is a narrow defeat, but it is also a warning against treating the Hurricanes as a comfortable multi-goal favorite.

Special teams supplied opposite signals. Carolina's penalty kill finished 7-for-7, while its power play went 0-for-6. The successful kills support the close-game forecast; the missed opportunities with an extra skater temper expectations for an offensive rebound. Neither result should be stretched into a season-long judgment after one game.

Brandon Bussi made 19 saves against Florida. Kochetkov occupied the crease normally used by the next starter at Thursday practice, suggesting he could take over against Washington. He is described as healthy after lower-body injuries sidelined him for most of the previous year. That practice clue concerns his possible assignment, not how well he will play.

Seth Jarvis practiced in a yellow no-contact jersey following offseason shoulder surgery. His game availability remains uncertain here. Combined with the scoreless opener, that leaves enough doubt about Carolina's attack to keep the projected winning margin at one goal.

Key matchup factors

Special teams could decide a narrow game. Carolina's opening penalty kill offers encouragement against a Washington power play set to include Ovechkin, but another night with six unsuccessful power plays would put pressure on the Hurricanes' other scoring opportunities.

The moneyline consensus is divided across groups. As of 11:00 UTC on October 2, Carolina led the blended consensus at 72% and the sportsbook split at 82%. SportsJaw members favored Washington at 67%, as did qualified handicappers. Those are separate measures of selection preference, not win probabilities. The disagreement adds useful counterweight to Carolina's favorite status without automatically making Washington +127 a value bet.

Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Washington +1.5 (-204) and Carolina -1.5 (+174). The projected one-goal finish favors Washington's puck-line outcome, but -204 requires more conviction about a close result than this matchup warrants.

Carolina -1.5 (+174) needs a win by at least two goals. A scoreless opener and a failed power play make that a difficult margin to endorse. Washington's roster changes and Ovechkin's monitored workload also leave room for a wider range of outcomes than the single projected score suggests. Neither puck line is an official wager.

Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 6.5 (+106) and Under 6.5 (-122). Our five-goal projection points toward the Under, with Carolina's opening defensive result and offensive struggles supplying the reasoning.

The strongest caution is the small sample: Washington has yet to play, and Carolina's next starter is unconfirmed. The blended total consensus favors Over 6.5 at 60%, but that preference is not a scoring forecast. One low-scoring Carolina game is too thin a foundation to back Under 6.5 (-122), while the case for Over 6.5 (+106) needs more offensive evidence.

Washington Capitals vs Carolina Hurricanes projected score

Game forecast: Carolina Hurricanes 3, Washington Capitals 2. Carolina's successful penalty killing and ability to keep Florida scoreless until late in overtime earn the narrow nod. The projection assumes some improvement from its attack, rather than predicting another game without a goal.

Washington's strongest counterargument combines Ovechkin's return with Carolina's failure to score on six power plays. If those offensive problems persist, the Capitals can overturn this forecast. Confidence is low because Carolina's evidence comes from one game and Washington is making its season debut. Both the puck line and total remain passes at the supplied prices. The single official SportsJaw wager is Pass.
