Colts vs. Chiefs: Kansas City’s strong opener meets a demanding spread
Kansas City’s opening performance offers reasons for optimism, but one game and Wednesday’s injury report leave limited support for laying 6.5 points.
Contrasting starts
The Kansas City Chiefs host the Indianapolis Colts on September 20 in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season. Kansas City enters the Sunday Night Football matchup after beating Denver 31-10, while Indianapolis is addressing defensive problems exposed against Baltimore.
The Chiefs rushed for 220 yards, their largest single-game total since 2020. Ken Walker contributed 191 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, with 14 broken tackles and two runs of at least 20 yards. Patrick Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns.
Indianapolis allowed Baltimore 506 yards, 7.9 yards per play and 41 points, recording neither a pass breakup nor a tackle for loss. Communication and alignment problems prompted a review by defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Those results raise concerns, but they do not establish that run defense was Indianapolis’ greatest weakness or that Kansas City will reproduce Baltimore’s success.
Availability and the limits of one week
Kansas City’s defense held Denver to 176 yards and 3.7 yards per play, allowed two conversions on 12 third downs and recorded four sacks. That strengthens the Chiefs’ early case, although results against different opponents provide an incomplete comparison.
Wednesday’s practice report adds uncertainty. Indianapolis quarterback Anthony Richardson missed practice with a groin injury. Kansas City defensive back Chamarri Conner and tackle Josh Simmons also did not participate, while Chris Jones was limited with a calf injury. Mahomes was a full participant. These practice designations do not establish Sunday availability.
