Panthers vs. Falcons: Robinson matchup makes Carolina a difficult favorite to back
Young's success against Atlanta supports Carolina, but the Panthers' run defense gives Robinson a compelling opportunity. The betting call is Pass.
Matchup outlook
The Carolina Panthers visit the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff in NFL Week 2. Both teams enter 0-1. SportsJaw lists Carolina at -140 moneyline and -2.5 (-120), with Atlanta at +120 moneyline and +2.5 (+100).
Carolina's strongest argument comes from its passing production. Bryce Young is 4-1 in five games against Atlanta, with a 66.7% completion rate, 1,133 passing yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. The Panthers scored 37 points and gained 478 yards against Chicago last week, including eight catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns from Jalen Coker.
That offensive output came with substantial defensive counterevidence. Carolina lost 59-37 while allowing 291 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns and 7.5 yards per carry. Defensive tackle Bobby Brown III is out with a back injury, and outside linebacker Patrick Jones II is questionable after missing the opener.
Those problems make Bijan Robinson central to Atlanta's case. He recorded 83 rushing yards and 90 receiving yards against Pittsburgh. He has also reached at least 100 scrimmage yards in each of his past four games against Carolina, averaging 133. That history supports his matchup appeal, although it does not establish that Atlanta will cover.
The Falcons' passing performance limits enthusiasm. Confirmed starter Cooper Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the 20-13 loss at Pittsburgh. He was sacked four times, and Atlanta never took an offensive snap in the red zone. Guard Chris Lindstrom and cornerback A.J. Terrell are questionable, adding uncertainty on both sides of the ball.
