Browns vs. Buccaneers: Nine-point spread leaves a difficult betting call
Cleveland's offensive problems strengthen Tampa Bay's case, but the Buccaneers' shaky protection and turnovers complicate the margin and total.
Matchup and price
The Cleveland Browns visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 20 in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season. Both enter 0-1 after Cleveland lost 34-10 at Jacksonville and Tampa Bay lost 33-27 at Cincinnati.
SportsJaw lists Tampa Bay at -415 moneyline and -9 (-102), with Cleveland at +327 moneyline and +9 (-118). The total is over 41.5 (-108) or under 41.5 (-110). Cleveland's opener supplies reasons to favor Tampa Bay, but establishing value at those prices requires more than identifying the Browns' weaknesses.
Cleveland's offensive obstacles
Cleveland converted one of eight third downs and committed 11 penalties for 75 yards, including six offensive penalties. Deshaun Watson will remain the starter after completing 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking five sacks. His touchdown came on the final drive, limiting its reassurance about the offense's earlier performance.
Guard Teven Jenkins is out with a back injury, and running back Dylan Sampson went on injured reserve September 15. Cleveland rushed 22 times for 87 yards in the opener. Tampa Bay allowed 99.1 rushing yards per game in 2025, fifth fewest in the league, although that prior-season record does not establish its current defensive level.
Why the wager remains a pass
Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes with a 98.8 passer rating in Week 1, but he also took four sacks and lost three fumbles. Tampa Bay lost four fumbles overall. Those possession losses weaken confidence in backing a nine-point favorite. Cleveland's fourth-ranked defense by yards allowed in 2025 offers counterevidence, tempered by its 34 points conceded in the opener.
