Game outlook

Detroit is on the road playing New York at the MetLife Stadium stadium on Sunday, 12/18/2022 @ 1:00pm EST. New York -3 was the opening favorite and current line is New York -1.

Jets doctors did not clear Mike White for contact this week, so Zach Wilson will play at quarterback. My initial reaction to that was negative for the Jets, so the line shifted accordingly to Detroit as a slight favorite as a result. However, I can also envision Wilson taking advantage of this situation and playing well against an awful Lions defense. Therefore, I am still sticking with my Jets ML wager.

With four sacks and 18 pressures on Josh Allen, the Jets held Buffalo's mighty offense to just a 34% success rate and 23% rushing success rate last weekend. Defense is the key to this game. Despite being targeted just twice, Sauce Gardner allowed only one reception for 6 yards. Stefon Diggs was held to his lowest season receptions and yards (3 for 37) and was only targeted five times. It was another dominating performance by a defense that is clearly one of the best stop units in the NFL. Over the past six games, the Lions have covered all six games and won five outrights — with only one loss coming to the Bills on Thanksgiving. All five other opponents Detroit faced during the stretch were ranked outside the top 22 in DVOA, so Buffalo was the only defense Detroit encountered that had a pulse. A huge credit goes out to Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for turning Jared Goff into a functional quarterback this season. While Goff has plenty of weapons, this will be their toughest test of the season against a top-3 team on the road. I expect Goff's efficiency numbers to be slightly below what we've seen most of the season and for the Jets' defense to control tempo.

A rough rib injury hurt Mike White on Sunday in Buffalo, but he still showed his toughness. This week, I expect him to play and the Jets offense to have success against a Lions defense that likes to blitz, bring pressure, and sit back in man coverage. Although it is a small sample, White currently has the highest EPA/play against blitz this season — even higher than Patrick Mahomes. Again, it is a small sample; but it is still impressive. As a result of Zonovan Knight's emergence, the Jets' running game hasn't slowed down despite Breece Hall's injury. In his first game against a Lions defense trending upward but still outside of the top 20 in all major run-stop metrics, Knight should be in for another big game. The undrafted rookie has shown the ability to break tackles and grind out tough yards.

Detroit Betting

With a power ranking of 16, Detroit is ranked #6 in offense (scoring an average of 26.25 per game), #32 in defense (allowing an average of 27.00 points to be scored against them per game) and are 6-7 (9-4 ATS) this season.

New York Betting

New York Jets has a power ranking of 8 and are #18 for offense (scoring an average of 21.00 per game), #6 for defense (giving up an average of 27.00 points per game) and 7-6 (8-5 ATS) overall. Detroit went 2-1 (1-2 ATS) in their last 3 matchups against New York.

Staff Prediction

The Jets' defense will likely control the tempo, but the Lions’ offensive line is still a top-notch unit and should create enough movement up front to get into scoring territory to crack 20+ on the scoreboard. The status of Quinnen Williams could make their job a lot easier. He's rated among the NFL's best defensive linemen this season, but he missed practice on Wednesday due to a knee injury.

If Mike White responds well to a likely pregame numbing injection to temporarily cure his rib injury sustained against the Bills last week, I expect the Jets’ offense to be very successful in this game. If White cannot return, Zach Wilson will be the backup quarterback, which would make for an intriguing redemption storyline that we should all keep in mind in case White goes down again — which is very likely. Zonovan Knight has been a bright spot, grading out as one of the best RBs over the last few weeks. This game should be a big one for Knight, and he should set up some favorable matchups on the outside for Garrett Wilson and Elijah Moore. Last week, Jeff Okudah allowed more than 200 yards in coverage to Justin Jefferson. Met Life Stadium will have ideal throwing conditions Sunday, with temperatures in the 30s and winds under 10 mph. OVER 44.5 is the pick.
