New York Jets vs Chicago Bears Predictions October 4, 2026

Game time: October 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Soldier Field — Chicago, IL

Article updated Oct 1, 6:40 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Chicago Bears 23, New York Jets 21 is the prediction, with Chicago's NFL-leading rushing production providing the strongest reason to favor the home team. Geno Smith's efficiency gives New York a credible answer, especially against Chicago's frequent single-high coverage. Neither Jets +3 (+100) nor the total of 43 (-110) offers a strong enough edge for an actionable wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears prediction and best bet

Chicago gets the narrow nod because its running game gives the offense a productive foundation while the quarterback decision remains unsettled. The Bears lead the NFL at 184.3 rushing yards per game and 5.27 yards per attempt. Their defensive performance against Philadelphia adds another reason to expect a competitive home showing.

New York has enough passing production to challenge that forecast. Smith's accuracy and Chicago's vulnerability in yards allowed per play point toward a close game. Still, projecting a two-point margin is different from finding value at Jets +3 (+100). Injuries affect both offenses, and Chicago's quarterback uncertainty cuts confidence in either spread position. The best betting decision is Pass.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Kickoff: Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 1 p.m. ET. This is a Week 4 matchup in the 2026 NFL season.

Venue and TV: Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois; FOX.

Records: Jets 1-2; Bears 2-1 following their September 28 victory over Philadelphia.

Quarterbacks: Geno Smith leads New York's offense. Chicago had not announced its starter in the October 1 reporting.

SportsJaw odds: New York +3 (+100), Chicago -3 (-120). Moneyline: New York +155, Chicago -175. Total: Over 43 (-110) or Under 43 (-110).

New York Jets outlook

Smith supplies New York's strongest argument. Through Week 3, he led the NFL with a 75.5% completion rate and carried a 110.0 passer rating, averaging 261 passing yards per game. His four touchdown passes came without an interception. Those numbers make the passing game the clearest reason to expect the Jets to stay competitive.

The September 27 loss at Detroit illustrated that potential. Smith completed 83.8% of his attempts for 321 yards and three touchdowns, again without an interception. Garrett Wilson contributed 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Kenyon Sadiq added seven catches for 105 yards and a score, giving New York two productive receiving options that afternoon.

Health complicates the outlook. Breece Hall missed Wednesday and Thursday practices with a quadriceps injury. Guard Dylan Parham, receiver Adonai Mitchell and tight end Mason Taylor also missed both sessions. Sadiq was limited with a back injury, while Jeremy Ruckert was limited with a knee issue.

Those practice reports raise questions about the supporting cast without settling game availability. On defense, Minkah Fitzpatrick progressed from limited participation Wednesday to full participation Thursday after a groin injury. The passing production is encouraging, but New York still lost despite Smith's big Detroit performance.

Chicago Bears outlook

Chicago's rushing production supports the forecast, although the backfield and offensive line carry injury concerns of their own. D'Andre Swift and Braxton Jones missed Thursday practice with knee injuries. Their status matters to an offense whose running efficiency offers a way to ease the demands on whoever starts at quarterback.

Caleb Williams missed Wednesday and Thursday practices with a hamstring injury. Ben Johnson had not announced his selection, leaving uncertainty over how the offense would look against New York. Case Keenum's September 28 performance offers encouragement: he completed 70.6% of his passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns against Philadelphia, finishing with a 110.8 passer rating.

Keenum also ran for a touchdown, took no sacks and committed no turnovers in the 27-7 victory. That is a useful example of Chicago succeeding with another quarterback, though one performance leaves room for a different outcome this week.

The defense held Philadelphia to 248 yards and two conversions on nine third downs while forcing three takeaways. That showing contrasts with Chicago's broader ranking of 28th in yards allowed per play at 6.08. The Bears enter on a short week, and repeating their defensive success against Smith is a central challenge.

Key matchup factors

The coverage matchup is New York's sharpest advantage. Smith averaged 10.3 yards per attempt against single-high coverage, completing 88.9% of his passes with a 20.4% explosive-pass rate. Chicago used that coverage on 60.2% of opponent dropbacks. The pairing favors Smith analytically, although those early-season rates should not be treated as a promise of Sunday's production.

SportsJaw's October 1 consensus update at 22:30 UTC favored Chicago -3 at 55% and Over 43 at 64%. The Over had 385 of 601 combined consensus selections, incorporating a modeled sportsbook sample and SportsJaw participation. Those are not observed sportsbook ticket counts or win probabilities. Popularity alone offers no reason to back or oppose either selection.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears spread prediction

Pass on New York Jets +3 (+100) and Chicago Bears -3 (-120). The forecast favors a Jets cover, but its two-point margin sits close to the supplied spread. A three-point Chicago victory would push either side; the Bears need to win by more than three to cover.

Smith's matchup makes New York tempting at even money. Chicago's rushing production and recent defensive showing are meaningful counterarguments, while the Jets have their own offensive injury concerns. With a fragile margin estimate, neither price earns an official spread recommendation.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears total prediction

Pass on Over 43 (-110) and Under 43 (-110). The projected 44 points lean slightly above the line, with Smith's passing matchup and Chicago's rushing efficiency supplying the scoring case. A one-point projection gap leaves little cushion for a less productive offensive afternoon.

Chicago's unresolved quarterback choice and practice absences on both offenses widen the range of outcomes. The Bears' seven points allowed against Philadelphia supply counterevidence to the Over, but their season yards-per-play figure cautions against assuming another defensive shutdown. Neither direction earns a wager.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears projected score

Game forecast: Chicago Bears 23, New York Jets 21. Chicago's rushing attack gets the deciding weight, with Keenum's recent performance showing one route to effective offense if Williams remains unavailable. The strongest counterargument is Smith's ability to exploit the coverage Chicago has frequently played, particularly with Wilson coming off a productive game.

Confidence is low. The quarterback decision, offensive injuries and contrast between Chicago's latest defensive result and its season efficiency make this a slight edge. Chicago is the predicted winner, but the official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass. Both supplied spreads and the total of 43 remain passes despite the forecast's narrow preference for a Jets cover and the Over.
