Penalties are the strongest shared concern entering Ball State’s visit to Kent State on September 26, 2026. The Cardinals committed 11 in their 51-15 loss at Liberty, while the Golden Flashes drew 13 in a 59-3 defeat at No. 6 Ohio State. Both enter this college football MAC opener at 1-2 overall and 0-0 in conference play. Ball State’s rushing production and Kent State’s defensive takeaways offer reasons for encouragement, but results against different opponents provide a limited basis for choosing between them.
Date: September 26, 2026.
Venue: Dix Stadium, Kent, Ohio. Kent State hosts Ball State.
Broadcast: ESPN+.
Records: Both teams are 1-2 overall and 0-0 in the MAC. Each lost its September 19 road game and now begins conference play.
SportsJaw moneyline: Ball State +140; Kent State -160.
SportsJaw spread: Ball State +3 (+101); Kent State -3 (-118). A three-point Kent State victory would push either spread wager, rather than produce a winning ticket at those lines.
Ball State’s penalty problem extends beyond its most recent loss. Coach Mike Uremovich said the Cardinals committed 11 penalties in each of their past two games and identified penalties as the main issue to address after Liberty. In that game, the flags cost 107 yards. The repeated count makes discipline a more substantial concern than an isolated mistake, although it does not establish how many penalties will follow against Kent State.
The offense also struggled to sustain possessions. Ball State converted one of 10 third-down attempts and finished with 261 total yards, split between 93 passing and 168 rushing. Those figures support concern about the latest offensive performance. They do not establish a season-long passing trend or show how the Cardinals will fare against this particular defense.
TJ Horton supplied the clearest positive. He rushed for 79 yards on eight attempts and scored both Ball State touchdowns, recording his first collegiate game with two rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Keldric Luster added 30 yards on 10 carries and completed the two-point conversion after Horton’s second score. Horton’s production gives the Cardinals a recent success to build around, but eight attempts are a narrow foundation for projecting another efficient rushing day.
The defensive preparation includes containing Dru DeShields. Ball State’s staff highlighted the Kent State quarterback’s ability to escape pressure, run and continue searching downfield. Maintaining coverage while containing those movements is therefore a relevant assignment. It remains a tactical priority rather than evidence that Ball State can execute it consistently.
Kent State’s defense produced several positive plays within an otherwise decisive loss at Ohio State. Norey Johnson and Tanner Mintz intercepted passes, and Mintz’s 48-yard return set up Sean Leonard’s 30-yard field goal. The Golden Flashes also held the Buckeyes to one conversion on eight third downs and stopped them twice on fourth down in the first half.
Those details deserve consideration alongside the 59 points and 527 total yards allowed. The conversion stops show that Kent State won some individual situations; the broader totals prevent treating those stops as proof of an effective overall defensive performance. Two interceptions in one game likewise offer encouragement without establishing a repeatable turnover advantage against Ball State.
The offense finished with 134 total yards. DeShields completed six of 15 passes for 35 yards before being relieved, and Kent State used four quarterbacks. That usage describes the Ohio State game, but it does not by itself establish a quarterback competition, an injury or a planned change for the conference opener.
Brandon White led the rushing effort with 21 yards on five carries. Donovan Delaney Jr. added 20 yards on nine attempts, while Wayne Harris led the receivers with two catches for 29 yards. Ohio State’s No. 6 ranking is relevant context for those limited totals. Even so, the performance supplies little affirmative support for backing Kent State to create separation. The Golden Flashes also committed 13 penalties for 100 yards, adding another execution concern as they return home.
Ball State defensive back Gabe Aramboles was carried off on the opening kickoff of the second half at Liberty and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for further evaluation. His September 26 availability is not established by that report. The injury warrants attention, but assigning him an absence or projecting a specific replacement would go beyond what is confirmed.
SportsJaw total: Over 50.5 (-113); under 50.5 (-105). The two recent games present competing considerations for that market. Both offenses struggled, which makes an under worth examining, but both teams also allowed substantial scoring. Neither result establishes how these offenses and defenses will interact with each other.
The opponent difference is another limit on comparison. Ball State’s larger rushing total does not prove it has the better offense, just as Kent State’s interceptions do not prove it has the better defense. Home location is confirmed; the size of any resulting advantage is not. These distinctions prevent isolated positives from becoming stronger claims than the performances justify.
Pass. Kent State moneyline -160 requires a stronger case for winning than its isolated defensive successes provide. Kent State spread -3 (-118) additionally requires a victory by more than three points to cash. The latest offensive performance does not supply enough support for either recommendation.
The strongest counterargument is that Kent State’s defensive stops and takeaways could become decisive against a Ball State offense that struggled on third down. That is a plausible path to victory, but repeating those plays cannot be assumed. The Golden Flashes’ own offensive output and penalties remain material concerns.
Ball State moneyline +140 and Ball State spread +3 (+101) offer alternatives, with Horton’s rushing performance providing a reason to consider the visitors. Yet the Cardinals’ repeated penalties and limited passing production weaken that case. Neither the over nor the under has a sufficiently supported advantage at the listed total prices. With no dependable basis for a winner or scoring projection, the final recommendation is to pass on this matchup.
