BYU Cougars vs Utah Running Utes Betting Picks & Predictions

Game time: November 7, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET

Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium — Salt Lake City, UT

Article updated Nov 1, 10:30 PM EST

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Utah will beat BYU 27-20, with its balanced offense providing the strongest matchup advantage after a 534-yard performance against Cincinnati. BYU’s six-sack showing against Arizona State makes this a competitive forecast, however. Neither Utah -5.5 (-112) nor the 47.5 total at -110 offers a convincing betting edge. The official SportsJaw recommendation is Pass, with low confidence in the projected result.

BYU Cougars vs Utah Running Utes prediction and best bet

Utah gets the pick because its latest offensive performance offered more ways to sustain drives. The Utes rushed for 268 yards against Cincinnati while Devon Dampier threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. BYU won its own Oct. 31 game, but managed just 47 rushing yards against Arizona State. That contrast favors Utah if both offenses must work through long possessions.

The strongest objection is BYU’s pass rush, which produced six sacks in that victory. Pressure could interrupt Utah’s passing game and keep the margin narrow. The forecast is Utah 27, BYU 20, but the official betting recommendation is Pass. A modest projected cover is not enough reason to lay 5.5 points.

BYU Cougars outlook

BYU’s 27-20 win over Arizona State showed both its passing production and a concern entering this matchup. Bear Bachmeier completed 19 of 30 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown. With the rushing attack contributing only 47 yards, that passing output was an important part of a victory that moved the Cougars to 7-1.

Sione Moa led BYU with 20 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns. Those scores mattered, but they should not obscure the limited ground production. If Utah forces another game in which Bachmeier carries much of the yardage burden, BYU could have less flexibility in choosing how to attack. Improving the rushing contribution would give the Cougars a more convincing upset case.

Defensively, BYU recorded a season-high six sacks, all before halftime. That is its strongest recent answer to Utah’s offensive balance. Disrupting Dampier could leave the Utes facing longer conversions and reduce their freedom to mix runs and passes.

The uncertainty is how much of that pressure BYU can reproduce against a different opponent. Six sacks in one half are a substantial achievement, but this forecast does not assume another six-sack performance. BYU’s path is competitive: generate disruption, get enough from Bachmeier and avoid asking a limited rushing performance to carry over into another win.

Utah Running Utes outlook

Utah improved to 8-0 with a 49-25 victory at Cincinnati, taking a 42-6 halftime lead and finishing with 534 total yards. The 268 rushing yards are particularly relevant against a BYU team coming off a strong pass-rushing performance. A productive ground game could help Utah avoid situations in which the Cougars can concentrate on attacking Dampier.

Dampier completed 22 of 29 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Wayshawn Parker added 99 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Hunter Andrews caught five passes for 112 yards and two scores. Those contributions give Utah the stronger recent offensive case, although they came against Cincinnati rather than this BYU defense.

The final score also needs context. Utah scored on a 51-yard fumble return and a 39-yard interception return. Those defensive touchdowns were valuable, but projecting another pair would inflate expectations for this matchup. The yardage and passing performance offer a firmer foundation for the forecast than simply carrying 49 points forward.

Playing at Rice-Eccles Stadium adds to Utah’s appeal, but its offense still has to handle BYU’s pressure. The preferred script is a useful rushing contribution that keeps Dampier from repeatedly facing obvious passing downs. That is a plausible route to victory, with enough uncertainty to temper the betting recommendation.

Key matchup factors

The central contest is Utah’s offensive flexibility against BYU’s ability to create negative plays. Utah’s rushing production suggests a way to limit exposure to pressure; BYU’s sack performance suggests a way to disrupt that plan. Neither recent game supplies a direct comparison against the same defense, so the contrast deserves weight without being treated as a precise measure of the gap.

SportsJaw’s blended moneyline consensus favors Utah -215 at 74%, updated Nov. 2 at 03:21 UTC. That figure describes selection support, not Utah’s probability of winning or confidence in this forecast. It also says nothing directly about whether Utah will cover 5.5 points. Popularity alone gives no reason to back BYU.

BYU Cougars vs Utah Running Utes spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Utah -5.5 (-112) and BYU +5.5 (-108). The projected seven-point Utah victory falls on the favorite’s side of the spread, but only by 1.5 points. That small cushion is fragile when the clearest comparisons come from one recent game for each team.

BYU’s pressure makes a narrow Utah win credible. Utah’s broader offensive production also makes taking the underdog uncomfortable. The forecast favors the Utes, while neither spread price earns an official recommendation.

BYU Cougars vs Utah Running Utes total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 47.5 (-110) and Under 47.5 (-110). The projected 47 points sit just half a point below the line, leaving virtually no room for forecasting error.

Utah’s offensive yardage and BYU’s passing production supply the scoring case. BYU’s pressure and limited rushing output point toward stalled possessions. Utah’s two defensive touchdowns against Cincinnati also caution against treating that 49-point result as a straightforward offensive benchmark. Neither direction offers enough separation from the supplied total to justify a wager.

BYU Cougars vs Utah Running Utes Projected Score & Betting Picks

Game forecast: Utah 27, BYU 20. Utah’s recent combination of rushing production and efficient passing makes it the preferred winner at home. The projection anticipates enough offensive success to overcome BYU without assuming another burst of defensive scoring.

BYU’s best counterargument is its disruptive defense, supported by six first-half sacks against Arizona State. If that pressure travels, the Cougars could erase Utah’s projected margin or win outright. Confidence is low because these recent performances offer a useful direction, not a dependable measure of separation. Both the spread and total remain a Pass. The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.
