Southern Miss. Golden Eagles vs Troy Trojans Predictions October 6, 2026

Game time: October 6, 2026 at 8:00 PM ET

Venue: Veterans Memorial Stadium (AL) — Troy, AL

Article updated Oct 3, 3:34 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Troy will beat Southern Miss 27-20, with its physical rushing approach and varied defensive looks giving the Trojans a slight matchup advantage at home. Southern Miss’s productive passing performance at Tulane is the strongest counterargument. Neither Troy -9.5 (-122) nor the total of 50.5 offers a convincing betting edge at the supplied prices, so the official recommendation is Pass.

Southern Miss. Golden Eagles vs Troy Trojans prediction and best bet

Troy is the pick to win, but this looks closer than the 9.5-point spread. The Trojans rushed for 169 yards at Utah State, and Southern Miss coach Blake Anderson highlighted their physical running style ahead of this matchup. Pair that with the pressure and coverage variation Anderson described, and Troy has a plausible route to disrupting the visitors’ offense.

The caution comes from both teams’ September 26 performances. Troy committed four turnovers in a 21-10 defeat, while Southern Miss generated 401 yards and led Tulane in the fourth quarter before losing 24-21. Those results leave room for a competitive game. Best bet: Pass, with a low-confidence forecast of Troy 27, Southern Miss 20.

Southern Miss. Golden Eagles outlook

Southern Miss’s performance at Tulane gives the visitors a credible offensive case. Landry Lyddy completed 18 of 29 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns. The team finished with 270 passing yards and 131 rushing yards, so its 401-yard output included contributions from both parts of the offense. Holding a fourth-quarter lead also makes that defeat more informative than the losing streak alone.

Mario Sanders caught four passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns, while Davis Dalton added three receptions for 75 yards and a score. Those two targets give Troy specific problems to address. The question is how effectively Lyddy can find them against the changing fronts and coverages Anderson described.

Kicking execution hurt Southern Miss at Tulane: a 44-yard attempt missed, and a 21-yard attempt was blocked with 1:45 remaining. Those were costly opportunities in a three-point loss.

Anderson’s September 29 injury update was conditional. Briggs could be fully available if his practice test went well. Jeffrey Rush had twice dislocated a big toe, with possible surgery affecting his longer-term outlook. Laquan Robinson’s lateral ankle injury left his availability dependent on treatment response and pain tolerance. None of those updates should be read as a confirmed game-day clearance.

Troy Trojans outlook

Troy’s loss at Utah State offers reasons to favor the Trojans and reasons to resist laying a large spread. They led 10-7 at halftime and gained 395 yards, only 18 fewer than Utah State. Four turnovers and two missed field goals in the second half helped turn a competitive yardage performance into a 21-10 defeat.

Gavin Griffin supplied 66 rushing yards on 11 carries as Troy finished with 169 on the ground. That production supports Anderson’s description of a physical running team. It gives Troy a route to sustaining possessions, although one rushing total is not enough to predict control of this particular opponent.

Goose Crowder completed 25 of 49 passes for 226 yards and connected with Howard Kinchen for a 13-yard touchdown. Troy therefore also needs better returns from its passing opportunities. Simply assuming the turnovers disappear would make the case for a comfortable win too generous.

Anderson’s assessment of Troy’s defensive pressure, front movement and coverage variation supplies the tactical reason for the home-team lean. Those features could complicate Southern Miss’s passing reads. They remain a matchup consideration rather than proof of defensive superiority, especially after Lyddy’s three-touchdown performance at Tulane.

Key matchup factors

Possession quality matters more here than assuming either team dictates the pace. Troy gained substantial yardage at Utah State but surrendered opportunities through turnovers and missed kicks. Southern Miss also moved the ball effectively before losing a close game with two unsuccessful field-goal attempts. Better finishing could raise scoring without either offense needing a dramatic improvement in yardage.

The other key is how Southern Miss handles Troy’s defensive variety. Sustained protection and timely decisions would let the visitors build on their Tulane passing performance. Disrupted possessions would instead give Troy’s running game more influence over the result. That uncertainty limits confidence in both a large winning margin and a low total.

Southern Miss. Golden Eagles vs Troy Trojans spread prediction

Pass on Southern Miss +9.5 (-102) and Troy -9.5 (-122). The projected seven-point margin points toward the Golden Eagles, but it is a narrow editorial lean rather than a firm valuation of the spread.

Southern Miss’s passing production and close loss at Tulane argue against expecting Troy to pull away comfortably. Troy’s four-turnover outing adds another obstacle to backing the favorite at this number. Conversely, Southern Miss’s unresolved availability questions and recent kicking problems complicate the underdog case. The forecast favors a competitive Troy victory, with neither spread price strong enough for an official wager.

Southern Miss. Golden Eagles vs Troy Trojans total prediction

Pass on the total of 50.5, priced Over -133 and Under -127. The projected 47 points leans below the line, but that gap alone is too thin a reason to pay the Under price.

Both September 26 games finished below 50.5. Yet those results included missed scoring opportunities, and Southern Miss and Troy produced 401 and 395 yards, respectively. Cleaner finishing could change the scoring picture. Troy’s rushing production also says little by itself about the number of possessions this game will contain. The Under has a plausible script, but the scoring counterargument keeps it a Pass.

Southern Miss. Golden Eagles vs Troy Trojans projected score

Game forecast: Troy Trojans 27, Southern Miss. Golden Eagles 20. Troy’s rushing production and the defensive challenges identified by Anderson give the home team a slight advantage. The projection assumes Troy converts enough possessions to overcome a Southern Miss offense that showed useful balance and productive receiving options at Tulane.

The strongest counterargument is Troy’s ball security. Another turnover-heavy performance could undo that advantage, particularly if Lyddy again turns passing opportunities into touchdowns. Confidence is low because neither recent performance establishes a dependable separation between these teams. Troy remains the projected winner; both spread options and the 50.5 total are Pass recommendations. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
