Washington St. Cougars vs San Diego St. Aztecs Predictions October 31, 2026

Venue: Snapdragon Stadium — San Diego, CA

Article updated Oct 26, 12:22 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

San Diego State will beat Washington State 27-24 in our October 31 forecast. The Aztecs’ 549-yard performance against Colorado State gives them the stronger recent offensive case, although their defense allowed 565 yards in that loss. Confidence is low, and neither San Diego State -3 (-110) nor either direction at the supplied 48.5 total offers enough value for an official wager.

Washington St. Cougars vs San Diego St. Aztecs prediction and best bet

San Diego State gets the winner pick because its latest offensive performance offers more encouragement than Washington State’s. The Aztecs scored 49 points at Colorado State on October 24; the Cougars managed 10 against Boise State. Stone Saunders’ productive first career start gives San Diego State a promising passing option, with Jaylon Hawkins coming off a career-high receiving performance.

Those results came against different opponents, so the scoring gap deserves restraint. San Diego State also allowed 56 points, making another competitive finish a reasonable expectation. The forecast is San Diego State 27, Washington State 24, with low confidence. The best betting decision is Pass.

Washington St. Cougars outlook

Washington State’s 31-10 loss to Boise State on October 24 leaves a difficult offensive starting point for this forecast. Owen Eshelman completed 21 of 40 passes for 191 yards and recorded 23 rushing attempts for 33 yards. Those figures show substantial quarterback involvement without much yardage on the ground. Against San Diego State, improving the return on those possessions is central to the Cougars’ chances.

Branden Ganashamoorthy supplied four catches for a team-high 58 yards against Boise State. The Pac-12 had also identified him as a PFF College National Team of the Week honoree in its October 21 release. That recognition and his latest receiving contribution make him a player to watch, though neither supplies a reason to project a sudden offensive surge.

The opening for Washington State comes from the opposing defense. Colorado State converted nine of 12 third downs against the Aztecs, suggesting that extending possessions could be a productive route for the Cougars. Washington State still has to execute that approach. Its own recent scoring result argues for caution, while San Diego State’s defensive difficulties keep a more competitive road performance within reach.

San Diego St. Aztecs outlook

San Diego State’s 56-49 loss at Colorado State contained both the strongest reason to pick the Aztecs and the strongest reason to keep confidence low. They generated 549 total yards and converted eight of 13 third downs. Their defense surrendered 565 yards, allowing Colorado State to sustain drives even more successfully.

In his first career start, Saunders completed 23 of 33 passes for 369 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Hawkins caught six passes for a career-high 164 yards and a touchdown, scoring for a fifth consecutive game. If Saunders again directs the offense, that connection offers an appealing route to points. The two interceptions also illustrate the risk attached to projecting another big performance from a quarterback with limited starting experience.

The defense has a better recent result to draw on. The Pac-12’s October 21 report noted that San Diego State held Fresno State to 276 yards in a 26-23 win, its first sub-300-yard allowance of 2026. Kai Wallin recorded three sacks in that game. That performance makes a defensive recovery plausible, but the subsequent Colorado State result leaves considerable uncertainty about how much improvement to expect.

Key matchup factors

The central question is how much Washington State can benefit from San Diego State’s defensive trouble. A repeat of the Cougars’ 10-point output would favor the Aztecs heavily. A rebound against a defense that struggled to get off the field would make the three-point spread much more demanding.

Possession-ending plays matter as well. Saunders’ two interceptions are a reminder that passing yardage alone will not settle the matchup. Washington State needs to turn any opportunities into points, while San Diego State needs its offensive production to survive mistakes. The forecast favors the Aztecs’ scoring potential, with a narrow margin reflecting the defense’s sharply different recent performances.

Washington St. Cougars vs San Diego St. Aztecs spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on San Diego State -3 (-110) and Washington State +3 (-110). The projected three-point Aztecs victory would push either spread, leaving no projected cushion at the supplied line.

San Diego State’s latest offensive showing supports the winner selection, but its defensive performance makes laying points uncomfortable. Taking Washington State requires trusting an offensive improvement after the Boise State loss. Both outcomes are plausible; neither side has a persuasive pricing advantage. The Aztecs are the forecast winner, while the spread remains a Pass.

Washington St. Cougars vs San Diego St. Aztecs total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 48.5 (-110) and Under 48.5 (-110). The projected 51 points lean above the line, but that small difference is insufficient to make the Over an official wager.

San Diego State’s productive offense and vulnerable defense supply the higher-scoring argument. Washington State’s latest 10-point performance supplies the strongest objection. The Aztecs also recently held Fresno State below 300 yards. A total wager would require more conviction about which defensive performance carries forward and how much the Cougars’ scoring improves. Keep both directions at Pass.

Washington St. Cougars vs San Diego St. Aztecs projected score

Game forecast: San Diego State 27, Washington State 24. The Aztecs’ recent passing production earns the winner selection. The score anticipates Washington State improving on its Boise State performance against a defense that just struggled badly, while San Diego State scores enough to finish ahead.

The strongest counterargument is that the same defensive weakness could cost the Aztecs the game outright. Saunders’ interceptions add another source of uncertainty, and one productive start is a limited foundation for a forecast. Confidence is low. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass, with no wager recommended on either supplied spread or either direction at 48.5.
