Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates Predictions October 31, 2026

Game time: October 31, 2026 at 3:00 PM ET

Venue: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium — Greenville, NC

Article updated Oct 25, 11:17 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

East Carolina will beat Temple 27-20 in this forecast, with the Pirates’ recent rushing production and Landon Sides’ return providing the strongest offensive case. ECU gained 421 yards at Memphis, but quarterback uncertainty and a squandered third-quarter lead temper that promise. Neither East Carolina -5.5 (-117) nor either side of the 49.5 total earns a wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates prediction and best bet

East Carolina gets the win prediction because its offense offers credible ways to build scoring drives. TJ Engleman Jr.’s recent rushing production gives the Pirates a starting point, while Sides’ 130-yard receiving performance at Memphis adds a complementary threat. The forecast is East Carolina 27, Temple 20, with low confidence.

The best bet is Pass. ECU’s quarterback change and failure to protect a 24-10 third-quarter lead at Memphis make a narrow finish plausible even if its offense plays well. A seven-point projected margin would cover East Carolina -5.5, but that small cushion is too fragile to justify the price. The total requires a separate judgment, and the scoring uncertainty keeps it a Pass.

Temple Owls outlook

Temple’s defensive staff will have a different arrangement for this matchup. The school announced October 20 that defensive line coach Cedric Calhoun had been relieved of his duties. Henry Baker became assistant head coach and interim defensive coordinator while also holding the defensive backs coaching role.

The changes extended across the defensive staff. Brian L. Smith moved to safeties coach, Chris Raitano to defensive line and outside linebackers coach, and Jordan Hopkins to defensive analyst and assistant defensive line coach. Those assignments make defensive coordination a central question for Temple coming out of the bye.

Against ECU, the practical challenge is handling both Engleman’s rushing and Sides’ receiving threat without allowing one to create room for the other. Committing extra attention to the run could leave opportunities through the air; concentrating on Sides could put more pressure on the front to control rushing gains.

The staff changes alone are no reason to predict better tackling, fewer mistakes or a particular coverage plan. Temple’s potential advantage lies in facing an opponent that changed quarterbacks during its last game. Creating difficult passing situations would give the Owls a route to disrupting ECU, although that is a tactical possibility rather than an established Temple strength.

East Carolina Pirates outlook

East Carolina’s 41-34 overtime loss at Memphis on October 22 contained both the argument for this forecast and the warning against betting it. The Pirates led 16-3 at halftime and 24-10 in the third quarter. Memphis then completed a comeback, with ECU allowing 38 points across the second half and overtime.

The Pirates gained 421 yards, split between 260 passing and 161 rushing. Memphis finished with 484 yards. ECU showed it could move the ball, but its offensive production was insufficient to overcome what happened on the other side.

Engleman carried 18 times for 92 yards, ending a streak of four consecutive games with at least 99 rushing yards. Sides returned from an earlier-season injury and caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. His performance adds a receiving option to the forecast alongside Engleman’s recent ground production.

The quarterback position carries greater uncertainty. Mitch Griffis replaced starter Emory Williams after ECU’s fifth series. Griffis completed 14 of 26 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions; Williams completed five of 13 for 61 yards. Coach Blake Harrell did not commit to a quarterback going forward in the postgame account. Those interceptions and the change under center complicate any expectation of smooth offensive execution against Temple.

Key matchup factors

Engleman’s production across several games is more useful to the forecast than treating ECU’s 34 points at Memphis as a repeatable scoring baseline. His rushing gives the Pirates a plausible way to sustain possessions while their quarterback decision remains a question. Sides’ return adds another option, although one productive appearance is a limited sample.

The other decisive factor is whether ECU can turn an advantage into a finished win. Its Memphis collapse raises doubts about protecting a lead, which matters especially when laying points. Temple’s defensive reshuffle adds uncertainty to that calculation. It could affect how ECU is challenged, but assigning an automatic improvement to the Owls would overstate what a coaching announcement tells us.

Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on East Carolina -5.5 (-117) and Temple +5.5 (-100). The projected seven-point ECU win clears the favorite’s line by only 1.5 points. With low confidence in that margin, the forecast leaves little room for an interception, a stalled possession or another difficult defensive finish.

Temple’s points offer protection in a close game, but ECU’s weaknesses alone are insufficient reason to buy the underdog. The Owls’ staff changes do not quantify their chances of covering. East Carolina remains the winner selection; neither spread price earns a recommendation.

Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 49.5 (-113) and Under 49.5 (-108). The projected 47 points sit 2.5 below the total, giving the forecast an Under direction without making Under a bet.

ECU’s last game offers competing signals. Its offensive production and defensive collapse illustrate how scoring could exceed this number, while the quarterback change and Griffis’ two interceptions introduce uncertainty about sustained drives. The 75 combined points at Memphis also included overtime. That result is a warning about the range of outcomes, rather than a scoring expectation for Temple’s visit.

Temple Owls vs East Carolina Pirates projected score

Game forecast: East Carolina 27, Temple 20. Engleman’s recent rushing production and Sides’ successful return give ECU enough offensive promise to earn the selection. The forecast assumes the Pirates turn those options into a winning performance at home.

The strongest counterargument is the Memphis finish: ECU built a two-touchdown third-quarter lead and still lost. Its quarterback uncertainty adds another reason to keep confidence low. Temple’s defensive changes introduce a further variable without guaranteeing improvement.

A seven-point win and 47 combined points are editorial estimates, not precise measures of betting value. Both the spread and total remain Pass recommendations. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
