Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn St. Nittany Lions Predictions October 31, 2026

Game time: October 31, 2026 at 4:15 PM ET

Venue: Beaver Stadium — University Park, PA

Article updated Oct 25, 11:27 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Penn State will beat Purdue 27-23 in the Oct. 31 matchup, with low confidence. The Nittany Lions get a narrow nod at home, where their 11-game series winning streak offers context for a matchup between two 3-4 teams. Purdue’s stronger conference record keeps the forecast close. Neither Penn State -7.5 nor the 52.5-point total offers a compelling wager; the official recommendation is Pass.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn St. Nittany Lions prediction and best bet

Penn State is the pick to win, but Purdue has the stronger recent conference results. The Boilermakers have beaten Illinois and Minnesota, while the Nittany Lions have lost four consecutive Big Ten games. That contrast makes a narrow Penn State victory more persuasive than a comfortable cover.

The home setting tips the forecast toward Penn State, with its 11 consecutive series victories serving as secondary context. Older meetings deserve less weight than this season’s results. Penn State 27, Purdue 23 is a low-confidence forecast, and neither betting market earns a recommendation. Purdue +7.5 fits that projected margin, but a plausible cover is different from a sufficiently strong betting edge. The official SportsJaw wager is Pass.

Purdue Boilermakers outlook

Purdue’s best argument comes from its current Big Ten results. Consecutive victories over Illinois and Minnesota preceded a 38-26 home loss to Washington. The Boilermakers therefore arrive with two conference wins, even though their two-game winning streak ended before the bye. Against a conference opponent still seeking its first league victory, those wins deserve meaningful weight.

The Washington result supplies a caution alongside that progress. Purdue scored 26 points but allowed 38, finishing 12 points behind at home. That single result is no season-long verdict on either unit. It does, however, temper the idea that the earlier winning streak should automatically translate into a road upset.

Purdue also faces an unfavorable series record: 3-4 overall, with its last victory coming 20-13 at Beaver Stadium on Oct. 9, 2004. Those numbers describe the history, rather than the capabilities of this year’s players.

The practical case for Purdue is its more encouraging conference record and a spread that allows a seven-point defeat to cash. Its recent results keep the projected margin tight. They offer less guidance about how Purdue will create an advantage against Penn State’s particular offensive or defensive personnel.

Penn St. Nittany Lions outlook

Penn State’s four-game losing streak is the clearest concern. Wisconsin, Northwestern, USC and Michigan handed the Nittany Lions their conference defeats, leaving them 0-4 in Big Ten play and 2-4 overall. Matt Campbell’s team is still seeking its first conference win under him. A favorite laying more than a touchdown carries a demanding assignment against that backdrop.

The bye creates a break between those losses and the Purdue game, although Purdue had the same opportunity. There is no reason to assign Penn State an exclusive preparation advantage. StateCollege.com reported on Oct. 19 that receiver Koby Howard was expected to return. His status remains an expectation from that report, rather than confirmed game-day availability, so the forecast gives it limited weight.

Penn State’s series success is substantial. It won the most recent meeting 49-10 at Purdue in 2024 and the previous meeting in Happy Valley 35-7 in 2019. Those results explain the historical imbalance without guaranteeing another decisive win.

The Nittany Lions get the outright selection at home, but this season’s conference record argues for restraint. Ending the losing streak and winning by at least eight points are separate hurdles. The forecast clears only the first.

Key matchup factors

The key tension is between Penn State’s position as the home favorite and Purdue’s better conference record. Both teams are 3-4, so overall wins and losses offer no separation. Purdue’s 2-2 Big Ten mark supplies the stronger current counterargument to Penn State’s historical success.

Shared bye weeks also keep rest from becoming a reason to prefer either team. Howard’s possible return adds a personnel consideration, but an expected appearance alone is too little to project a scoring boost. The greatest weight belongs to the current results; the venue supplies the narrow tiebreaker. That balance produces a Penn State win with a margin smaller than the supplied spread.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn St. Nittany Lions spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Purdue +7.5 (-110) and Penn State -7.5 (-110). The four-point forecast falls on Purdue’s side of the number. Its conference wins, combined with Penn State’s losing streak, make the underdog worth considering.

Still, those results leave considerable uncertainty about the actual margin. Penn State’s past success against Purdue is insufficient reason to lay 7.5, while Purdue’s better conference record alone is insufficient reason to buy the points. The projection favors a competitive game, but confidence in that margin is too low for an official spread wager.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn St. Nittany Lions total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 52.5 (-110) and Under 52.5 (-112). Penn State 27, Purdue 23 produces 50 combined points, placing the forecast slightly below the line.

Purdue’s 38-26 loss to Washington produced 64 points, a reminder that its latest result points in the opposite direction. Neither that single game nor the projected score supplies a reliable scoring trend for this matchup. Without a stronger view of offensive production and defensive resistance, paying -112 for the Under is unappealing. The Over also remains a Pass.

Purdue Boilermakers vs Penn St. Nittany Lions projected score

Game forecast: Penn State 27, Purdue 23. The home setting earns the Nittany Lions a narrow selection, while their series record provides supporting historical context. This is a low-confidence call, with Purdue’s two conference victories and Penn State’s four consecutive defeats forming a substantial counterargument.

The forecast anticipates a closer outcome than Penn State’s recent series victories, but it is an editorial estimate rather than a precise measure of either team’s scoring ability. Purdue lands inside +7.5 and the combined score lands below 52.5; neither relationship is strong enough to turn into a wager. Both market recommendations remain Pass, and the single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
