Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns Predictions October 31, 2026

Game time: October 31, 2026 at 7:30 PM ET

Venue: DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium — Austin, TX

Article updated Oct 26, 12:28 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Texas will beat Mississippi State, 31-17, with its stronger defensive numbers and red-zone efficiency providing the clearest matchup advantages. The Bulldogs’ offensive production makes Mississippi State +20.5 (-110) the best wager at the supplied SportsJaw price. Texas is the pick to win, but covering that spread requires considerably more separation. The total of 50.5 is a Pass.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns prediction and best bet

Texas gets the winning forecast because its defensive profile offers the strongest contrast between these teams. The Associated Press matchup report lists the Longhorns allowing 19.1 points per game, compared with Mississippi State’s 27.7. Texas also converted 92.9% of its red-zone opportunities, a useful advantage against a defense allowing opponents to score on 84.0% of those trips.

The best bet is the point spread: Mississippi State +20.5 (-110). The Bulldogs’ reported averages of 439.7 yards and 30.0 points give them a credible scoring path despite the difficult assignment. Their defensive weaknesses favor Texas outright, but their offensive production makes taking more than three touchdowns attractive. The forecast is Texas 31, Mississippi State 17.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs outlook

Mississippi State’s offensive balance is the main reason to take the points. The AP’s October 25 report lists averages of 264.7 passing yards and 175.0 rushing yards. Those figures suggest the Bulldogs have more than one route to move the ball, although neither guarantees sustained success against Texas.

The same report credits Kamario Taylor with 1,460 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 65.4% completion rate. Da'Marion Bothwell is listed with 514 rushing yards on 91 carries and three touchdowns. That production supports a competitive offensive forecast without requiring Mississippi State to match its scoring average.

The October 24 result supplies the caution. Mississippi State lost 23-15 to Oklahoma despite gaining 352 yards, including 186 passing and 166 rushing. It converted only one of 11 third downs and possessed the ball for 26:44. Moving the ball between scoring opportunities was insufficient; repeating those third-down struggles would put heavy pressure on the defense.

That defense has its own problems. The AP lists 392.0 yards allowed per game, while Mississippi State’s 73.4 penalty yards per game ranked 121st in FBS. Against Texas, poor discipline could make difficult defensive possessions even harder. The Bulldogs need cleaner execution to turn their offensive potential into a competitive road performance.

Texas Longhorns outlook

Texas enters this forecast with the better defensive numbers and a productive recent rushing performance. The AP report lists 285.4 total yards allowed per game. Its offensive figures are more modest than Mississippi State’s: 369.6 total yards, comprising 224.7 passing and 144.9 rushing, alongside 30.7 points per game.

The Longhorns exceeded those yardage figures in their October 24 home win over Ole Miss. They won 34-27 with 419 yards, almost evenly divided between 212 passing and 207 rushing. Their 34:57 possession time illustrates one possible route against Mississippi State: sustain drives and leave fewer opportunities for the opposing offense.

Raleek Brown supplied a season-high 157 rushing yards in that victory. Ryan Wingo added seven catches for 111 yards and a 50-yard touchdown. Those performances give the Texas forecast substance beyond its status as a heavy favorite, with recent contributions from both the running and passing games.

Arch Manning also showed why a large spread deserves caution. He threw for 212 yards and one touchdown and ran for two touchdowns against Ole Miss, but he also threw two interceptions. Texas won despite those mistakes. Similar turnovers against Mississippi State could preserve a comfortable Longhorns victory while keeping the margin below the 21 points needed to cover.

Key matchup factors

Finishing drives matters more here than simply comparing total yardage. Mississippi State owns the larger offensive yardage average in the AP report, while Texas owns the stronger scoring-defense figure. The forecast favors Texas turning that difference into more productive possessions, especially given the red-zone matchup.

The distinction between red-zone scores and touchdowns matters, too. Texas’ 92.9% conversion rate counts scoring opportunities converted; it should not be read as a touchdown rate. Field goals would help Texas win while making a large cover harder. Mississippi State’s third-down performance against Oklahoma is the clearest warning for the underdog, but one poor afternoon should not erase its broader offensive production.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns spread prediction

The spread recommendation is Mississippi State +20.5 (-110). The case rests on the Bulldogs’ passing and rushing production, along with the room that this line leaves for a decisive Texas win. Manning’s two interceptions against Ole Miss also illustrate how mistakes could interrupt Texas’ attempts to pull away.

The risk is substantial: Mississippi State’s penalties, defensive scoring allowance and recent third-down struggles could combine badly. Still, the Bulldogs have enough offensive evidence behind them to take the points. The projected 14-point margin supports that assessment; it is not the sole reason for the wager.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns total prediction

The total recommendation is Pass on 50.5, with Over 50.5 (-110) and Under 50.5 (-110) both unselected. Texas 31, Mississippi State 17 produces 48 points, but that narrow gap offers limited room for scoring variation.

Texas’ defensive numbers and Mississippi State’s recent third-down struggles favor a lower total. The opposing case is meaningful: both teams’ reported scoring averages reach 30 points, and Texas has an appealing red-zone matchup. One possession-heavy Texas performance is too small a sample to project a consistently slow game. The spread is the stronger wager.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs Texas Longhorns projected score

Game forecast: Texas 31, Mississippi State 17. Texas’ defensive advantage and recent offensive balance make the Longhorns the winning choice. Brown’s performance against Ole Miss supplies a plausible way to sustain drives, while Wingo’s production shows that Texas can also create a significant gain through the air.

The strongest counterargument is Mississippi State’s offensive output, which could make this closer than expected if the Bulldogs improve on third down. Conversely, their penalties and defensive weaknesses threaten the cover. Confidence in the forecast is medium. The single official SportsJaw wager is the point spread, Mississippi State +20.5 (-110). The total remains a Pass despite the projected 48 combined points.
