Illinois Fighting Illini vs Maryland Terrapins Predictions October 31, 2026

Game time: October 31, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET

Venue: SECU Stadium — College Park, MD

Article updated Oct 25, 10:03 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Illinois will beat Maryland 24-23, with its defense’s recent performance against Oregon providing the strongest reason to favor the Fighting Illini. Maryland’s 30-point effort against Rutgers keeps the forecast close, and its coaching change adds uncertainty. Illinois -2.5 (-135) offers no compelling betting edge here, while the total of 50.5 (-110) is also a pass. The official recommendation is Pass.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs Maryland Terrapins prediction and best bet

Illinois gets the pick for this Oct. 31, 2026 college football matchup because its latest performance offers a credible defensive foundation. The Fighting Illini beat Oregon 21-10 on Oct. 24, scoring 21 unanswered points and improving to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play. That earns them a narrow preference in College Park.

The wager requires a tougher judgment. Illinois must win by at least three to cover -2.5, and the -135 price makes a marginal edge expensive. Maryland scored 30 points in its reported loss to Rutgers, enough to warrant caution about projecting another low opponent score. Best bet: Pass. The forecast favors Illinois without endorsing either spread side.

SportsJaw moneyline: Illinois -134; Maryland +100. The spread and moneyline both favor Illinois, but neither price alone makes the Fighting Illini a worthwhile bet.

Illinois Fighting Illini outlook

Illinois’ Oregon win combined an explosive rushing performance with timely passing scores. Aidan Laughery rushed for 126 yards on 12 carries, including a 75-yard touchdown. Michael Clayton II completed 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Collin Dixon supplied six catches, 65 yards and a 23-yard touchdown.

Those numbers show how Illinois won, but they also identify the concern for a road favorite. Laughery’s touchdown accounted for more than half his rushing yardage. Another long run would help enormously; a forecast should also consider what happens if Maryland prevents it. Clayton’s two scoring passes were valuable, although 84 passing yards offer a limited foundation for projecting sustained production.

Defensively, Juice Clarke recorded 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Ean Rhea forced a fumble that Joe Barna recovered. Those contributions support the narrow Illinois lean alongside Oregon’s 10-point finish.

The balance of evidence favors Illinois modestly. Its most recent result shows a route to victory through rushing explosiveness and defensive plays. It leaves more uncertainty about how comfortably the offense can win if that explosive element disappears.

Maryland Terrapins outlook

Maryland’s clearest offensive counterargument comes from its 37-30 loss to Rutgers, reported in the university’s Oct. 19 game announcement. Scoring 30 points gives the Terrapins a plausible path to challenge Illinois. Allowing 37 in that same game is the concern: a competitive offensive showing still ended in a seven-point defeat.

The record also needs its date attached. Maryland listed itself at 2-5 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten play on Oct. 19. That conference start weighs against an aggressive Maryland pick, but it does not dictate the margin against Illinois. A short spread demands a more precise judgment than simply choosing the team with the better record.

Maryland announced on Oct. 21 that Michael Locksley stepped down immediately and named Aazaar Abdul-Rahim interim head coach. Abdul-Rahim had served as co-defensive coordinator, associate head coach of defense and cornerbacks coach since 2024.

His existing role supplies familiarity with the defense. Whether the leadership change improves performance remains an open football question. There is no reason to automatically award Maryland an emotional boost or penalize it for disruption. Its scoring against Rutgers is the firmer reason to keep this forecast close.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Illinois can generate enough offense without another long touchdown run. Maryland limiting explosive gains would place more responsibility on an Illinois passing game that produced 84 yards against Oregon. If Laughery creates another major play, Illinois’ route to a lead becomes easier.

At the other end, Maryland’s Rutgers scoring offers a useful check on enthusiasm for Illinois’ defense. Holding Oregon to 10 points was encouraging, but applying that result directly to Maryland would be too aggressive. These are individual performances against different opponents. Together, they support a close Illinois forecast more convincingly than a comfortable road cover or a firm scoring-total opinion.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs Maryland Terrapins spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Illinois -2.5 (-135) and Maryland +2.5 (-135). The projected Illinois victory is narrower than the margin required to cash the favorite’s spread ticket.

That makes Maryland tempting at +2.5, but a one-point forecast is too fragile to justify paying -135 for the underdog either. Maryland’s reported conference record and the 37 points allowed to Rutgers temper that case. Illinois’ defensive showing earns the winner selection; it does not supply enough separation to recommend laying points at this price. Neither spread side earns an official wager.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs Maryland Terrapins total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 50.5 (-110) and Under 50.5 (-110). The projected 47 points put the forecast below the line, making Under the natural direction to examine.

The supporting case is still thin. Illinois’ Oregon game finished with 31 combined points, while Maryland’s reported Rutgers loss produced 67. Those contrasting outcomes leave considerable room around the projection. Laughery’s long touchdown also illustrates how one explosive play can change a scoring outlook. A forecast below 50.5 is insufficient by itself to turn Under into a recommended bet.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs Maryland Terrapins projected score

Game forecast: Illinois Fighting Illini 24, Maryland Terrapins 23. Confidence: low. Illinois gets the nod because its Oregon performance paired a productive rushing threat with a defense that allowed only 10 points and recovered a forced fumble.

Maryland’s strongest counterargument is its 30-point output against Rutgers. If that scoring carries over, Illinois could need more passing production than it delivered against Oregon. That possibility keeps the projected margin narrow and the confidence modest.

The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass. Illinois is the projected winner, but neither Illinois -2.5 (-135), Maryland +2.5 (-135), nor either direction at 50.5 (-110) offers a sufficiently persuasive wagering case.
