Northern Colorado Bears vs Montana Grizzlies Predictions Today

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 4:00 PM ET

Venue: Washington-Grizzly Stadium — Missoula, MT

Article updated Oct 3, 11:31 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Montana will beat Northern Colorado, with a projected score of Montana 38, Northern Colorado 17. The Grizzlies' balanced offense supplies the strongest edge after a 607-yard performance against UC Davis, led by Eli Gillman's school-record 275 rushing yards. Northern Colorado's defensive standing adds enough resistance to make Montana -26.5 (-115) unappealing. Neither that spread nor the 57.5 total offers a compelling wager.

Northern Colorado Bears vs Montana Grizzlies prediction and best bet

Montana is the pick to win this Big Sky matchup on October 3, 2026. Its latest performance combined explosive rushing, productive passing and turnover-free offense in a 62-22 victory over UC Davis. That balance gives the Grizzlies several ways to challenge a Northern Colorado team ranked second in the conference in total defense.

The official betting recommendation is Pass. Winning comfortably and covering Montana -26.5 (-115) require different judgments, and the Bears bring meaningful defensive resistance alongside two consecutive victories. Montana's three straight shutouts in this series strengthen the winner forecast, but projecting another overwhelming margin gives too little weight to Northern Colorado's current form.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Kickoff: October 3, 2026, at 2 p.m. Mountain, according to both teams' official previews.

Venue: Washington-Grizzly Stadium, Missoula, Montana. Broadcast: ESPN+ and Scripps Sports.

Records: Northern Colorado is 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky play, with two straight wins. Montana is 4-1 and 2-0 in conference play.

SportsJaw odds: Northern Colorado +1,567 moneyline and +26.5 (-115); Montana -2,074 moneyline and -26.5 (-115). Total: Over 57.5 (-108) or Under 57.5 (-108). Montana returns from a two-game road swing for Homecoming.

Northern Colorado Bears outlook

Northern Colorado's recent results give the Bears something concrete to build on. A 23-17 overtime victory over Northeastern State preceded a 37-13 win against Utah Tech on September 26. Those were the program's first consecutive wins under Ed Lamb. Against Utah Tech, a 20-13 halftime advantage became a comfortable victory as the Bears held the Trailblazers scoreless after the break.

The scoring came through multiple routes. Jordan Herron's 19-yard touchdown run completed a 75-yard opening drive, while Mikhail Benner returned an interception 11 yards for a touchdown on Utah Tech's first offensive snap. Brayten Silbor made his first Northern Colorado start, completed 15 passes for 140 yards without an interception and added a rushing touchdown.

Those contributions matter, but the defensive touchdown also cautions against treating all 37 points as offensive production. Lamb said the Bears' efficiency has exceeded their scoring output and identified finishing drives as an issue. Montana's preview places Northern Colorado second in Big Sky total defense, the strongest reason to expect resistance here. For an upset, the Bears need that defense to limit explosive plays while their offense converts sustained possessions into touchdowns. Silbor's preparation with artificial crowd noise and nonverbal communication addresses another practical challenge on the road.

Montana Grizzlies outlook

Montana's strongest argument comes from the variety of its offensive production. The Grizzlies generated 607 yards without a turnover against UC Davis on September 26. Gillman's school-record 275 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns were the centerpiece, including a 58-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. That performance gives Northern Colorado an immediate reason to prioritize the ground game.

The passing attack makes that choice more difficult. Keali'i Ah Yat completed 21 of 31 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns against UC Davis, adding 22 rushing yards and two more scores. Brooks Davis exceeded 100 receiving yards for the third consecutive game and the fourth time in 2026. His repeated production gives the aerial threat more substance than a single big afternoon.

Montana has outscored opponents 187-119 through five games, although the 62-point outing should not become the default expectation against every opponent. Defensively, Nai Mose contributed eight tackles and a tackle for loss against UC Davis, while Tyler King recorded 2.5 sacks. Lamb's assessment of Montana emphasizes its interior strength, edge pressure, active linebackers and varied coverages. That combination could compound Northern Colorado's finishing problems. The Bears' conference defensive ranking is the clearest reason to temper expectations for another offensive rout.

Key matchup factors

Northern Colorado's defensive ranking and Montana's offensive balance create the decisive contest. If the Bears devote extra attention to Gillman, Ah Yat and Davis offer another route to move the ball. If Northern Colorado can contain the run without sacrificing coverage, the favorite may have to work through longer possessions.

The Bears' scoring efficiency matters just as much to the margin. Lamb said Northern Colorado has gone 12 consecutive quarters without scoring against Montana, consistent with the Grizzlies' three straight series shutouts. That history favors Montana, but it is not a forecast of another zero. Northern Colorado's recent opening touchdown drive shows a plausible path to points without requiring a defensive score.

Northern Colorado Bears vs Montana Grizzlies spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Montana -26.5 (-115) and Northern Colorado +26.5 (-115). The projected 21-point Montana victory falls inside the Bears' allowance, but that cushion alone is not enough to endorse the underdog.

Montana's offensive balance and series dominance create substantial risk for Northern Colorado backers. Conversely, the Bears' defensive standing and recent improvement make laying nearly four touchdowns uncomfortable. The winner case is stronger than the case for either spread position. At these prices, the competing evidence leaves the spread without an official selection.

Northern Colorado Bears vs Montana Grizzlies total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 57.5 (-108) and Under 57.5 (-108). The projection produces 55 points, only a modest gap beneath the supplied total. Montana's recent offensive explosion makes an Under vulnerable even if Northern Colorado contributes relatively little.

The Bears' defensive ranking and drive-finishing issues pull toward fewer points, while Montana's rushing and receiving threats pull the other way. Northern Colorado also scored through an interception return last week, illustrating how points can arrive outside sustained offensive possessions. There is too much tension between those factors to make either direction the official wager.

Northern Colorado Bears vs Montana Grizzlies projected score

Game forecast: Montana 38, Northern Colorado 17. The Grizzlies' ability to produce through Gillman, Ah Yat and Davis makes a decisive home victory the most persuasive outcome. Their defensive pressure also fits an opponent whose coach has highlighted missed scoring opportunities.

Northern Colorado's second-place Big Sky total-defense ranking is the strongest counterargument to a runaway result. Its two-game winning streak and scoreless second half against Utah Tech justify projecting more resistance than the recent series history suggests. Confidence in the winner forecast is medium; confidence in beating either betting line is lower. The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass, with both the spread and total left alone.
