Nicholls St. Colonels vs Houston Christian Predictions October 3, 2026

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET

Venue: Husky Stadium (TX) — Houston, TX

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Nicholls St. Colonels will beat Houston Christian 27-24 in our forecast, with Ean Rodrigue’s two touchdown passes against Lamar supplying the strongest reason for the slight edge. Houston Christian’s earlier takeaway production and explosive passing make this a fragile pick. Neither Nicholls +1.5 (-118) nor the total of 51.5 (-127) offers a convincing actionable wager.

Nicholls St. Colonels vs Houston Christian prediction and best bet

Nicholls gets the narrow call because its latest offensive performance offers several ways to build scoring drives. Rodrigue found the end zone twice through the air against Lamar, Jordan Smith contributed as a receiver, and Shane Lee supplied productive carries. Those are reasons to lean toward the Colonels in a close game, even after a 49-18 defeat.

The official betting recommendation is Pass. Houston Christian faced a different opponent in its 63-14 loss at North Texas, so comparing the teams’ yardage totals directly risks overstating Nicholls’ advantage. HCU also brings a meaningful counterargument in its earlier turnover and passing numbers. The forecast favors Nicholls; the price demands more conviction than this matchup earns.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Date and competition: Saturday, October 3, 2026, college football, with Nicholls visiting Houston Christian in Southland play.

Venue: Husky Stadium in Houston, Texas. Broadcast: ESPN+.

Records: Both teams enter 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southland, following losses on September 26.

SportsJaw spread: Nicholls +1.5 (-118); Houston Christian -1.5 (-108).

SportsJaw moneyline: Nicholls -111; Houston Christian -115.

SportsJaw total: Over 51.5 (-127); Under 51.5 (-127). Both total directions carry the same supplied price.

Nicholls St. Colonels outlook

Nicholls’ loss to Lamar exposed problems beyond the final margin. The Colonels allowed 439 total yards and converted just three of 15 third downs while gaining 329 yards themselves. That combination is the central concern for the road forecast: moving the ball occasionally will not be enough if possessions repeatedly stall.

Rodrigue completed 18 of 31 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns on September 26. Smith caught six passes for 78 yards, giving the Colonels a productive receiving option in that game. Their connection is a reasonable starting point for the offensive case, although one performance says little about how consistently it will translate against HCU.

The running contributions were uneven. Lee gained 64 yards on nine carries, while Tamaj Hoffman finished with 42 yards on 16 attempts. Lee’s production suggests a route to more manageable third downs if Nicholls can reproduce it. Hoffman’s heavier workload delivered less yardage, so assuming dependable rushing success would be premature.

Special teams also figured in the Lamar defeat. Nicholls trailed 14-7 before an 86-yard kickoff-return touchdown, and Lamar scored 42 first-half points. A cleaner start would help the Colonels keep their passing and rushing options available. The forecast depends on better execution, rather than treating last week’s offensive yardage as proof of a decisive advantage.

Houston Christian outlook

Houston Christian’s September 26 trip to North Texas ended with 222 total yards gained and 648 allowed. HCU produced 148 passing yards and 74 rushing yards, committing three turnovers in the 63-14 defeat. Those numbers describe a poor outing, but they should not become an automatic prediction for a home conference game against Nicholls.

Cutter Stewart completed nine of 15 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Maddox Kopp completed four of six for 24 yards and added 29 rushing yards with a touchdown. Both contributed, though their individual results leave the larger question of sustained offensive production open.

HCU’s first four games offer a stronger argument for the home team. Before September 26, 36 percent of its completions gained at least 15 yards, and its 16.91 yards per completion ranked fourth in the FCS. That earlier passing profile gives HCU a plausible way to challenge a Nicholls defense that just allowed 439 yards.

Through those same four games, HCU forced 12 fumbles and recovered six, with the recoveries ranking third in the FCS. Its plus-1.25 turnover margin ranked among the FCS top 10. Kicker Lukasz Smolen was also 7-for-7 on field goals and led the Southland with 38 points. These are dated strengths, not updated five-game totals, but they explain why dismissing HCU after one lopsided loss would be a mistake.

Key matchup factors

Possession quality matters more here than the difference between last week’s yardage totals. Nicholls needs to improve its third-down execution; HCU needs to avoid another three-turnover performance. Either problem recurring could outweigh a modest advantage elsewhere. HCU’s earlier fumble production makes ball security especially relevant to the Colonels’ chances.

The scoring effect of turnovers is less predictable. A takeaway can kill a promising drive or give the other offense a short field. HCU’s earlier explosive completions introduce another source of uncertainty. Those competing possibilities keep the game forecast close and make a confident total recommendation difficult. Neither team’s latest defensive result supplies much reassurance.

Nicholls St. Colonels vs Houston Christian spread prediction

Pass on Nicholls +1.5 (-118) and Houston Christian -1.5 (-108). The projected Nicholls victory points toward the underdog, but the evidence behind that forecast is too fragile to justify paying -118. The extra 1.5 points help, yet the protection is limited in a game projected to be close.

Houston Christian’s earlier takeaway production, passing explosiveness and kicking give the favorite credible winning routes. Nicholls’ recent offensive contributions keep us leaning the other way. That tension makes the spread a Pass rather than an official selection.

Nicholls St. Colonels vs Houston Christian total prediction

Pass on Over 51.5 (-127) and Under 51.5 (-127). Our 27-24 forecast totals 51 points, only half a point below the line. That small difference is not enough to justify the Under price.

Both defenses allowed substantial yardage last week, creating an argument for scoring. Nicholls’ third-down struggles and HCU’s limited production at North Texas point toward stalled possessions instead. HCU’s earlier explosive passing adds upside, while turnovers could affect scoring in either direction. The balance leaves neither total direction worth a wager.

Nicholls St. Colonels vs Houston Christian projected score

Game forecast: Nicholls St. Colonels 27, Houston Christian 24. Rodrigue’s touchdown production, Smith’s receiving contribution and Lee’s rushing performance provide the modest offensive foundation for selecting the Colonels. The projection assumes Nicholls improves on its three-for-15 third-down showing.

The strongest counterargument is HCU’s combination of earlier explosive passing, forced fumbles and accurate field-goal kicking. Those strengths could decide a close finish, especially if Nicholls repeats its execution problems. Confidence is low because the supporting performances came against different opponents and both teams just suffered heavy defeats. Nicholls remains the projected winner. The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass, with both the spread and total left alone.
