Chattanooga Mocs vs East Tennessee St. Buccaneers Predictions October 3, 2026

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 3:30 PM ET

Venue: William B. Greene Jr. Stadium — Johnson City, TN

Chattanooga will beat East Tennessee St. 27-24 in our forecast, with its SoCon-leading defense and productive running game supplying the narrow edge. ETSU’s efficient offense makes this a low-confidence upset prediction. Chattanooga +3.5 (-153) offers useful protection, but the price is too demanding for this slight lean. Neither the spread nor the 53.5 total earns an actionable recommendation.

Chattanooga Mocs vs East Tennessee St. Buccaneers prediction and best bet

Chattanooga gets the nod because its defensive production pairs with a rushing attack coming off two strong performances. The Mocs allow 14.2 points per game and have rushed for 551 yards across their preceding two outings. That combination offers a plausible route to winning without matching ETSU possession for possession in an offensive shootout.

The Buccaneers are a substantial obstacle. Their 437.2 yards per game and 55.2% third-down conversion rate both lead the SoCon. Those strengths make a comfortable Chattanooga win difficult to project. The forecast is Chattanooga 27, ETSU 24, with low confidence. The official betting decision is Pass: choosing a narrow winner leaves considerable uncertainty about value at the supplied prices.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Date and competition: Oct. 3, 2026, in the 2026 college football season.

Venue: Bank of Tennessee Field at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium, Johnson City, Tennessee.

Broadcast: ESPN+.

Records: Chattanooga is 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon; ETSU is 3-2 and 1-0.

SportsJaw moneyline: Chattanooga +120; ETSU -154.

SportsJaw spread: Chattanooga +3.5 (-153); ETSU -3.5 (-113). These prices make ETSU the home favorite despite the editorial upset forecast here. SportsJaw total: Over 53.5 (-130); Under 53.5 (-125).

Chattanooga Mocs outlook

Chattanooga’s defensive case extends beyond points allowed. The Mocs lead the SoCon in total defense at 266.6 yards allowed per game, pass defense at 136.2 and sacks at 2.80. Against an accurate ETSU passing game, that combination makes pressure and coverage the strongest reasons to pick the visitor.

The recent results reinforce that case. Chattanooga beat Wofford 41-7 and The Citadel 27-8, recording 19 tackles for loss and nine sacks across those two games. Ten of those tackles for loss came at The Citadel. Repeating that disruption would help push ETSU into situations where its passing efficiency must overcome longer distances.

The running game gives Chattanooga another route to controlling the contest. Kevin Lalin leads the conference with 95.8 rushing yards per game and shares the rushing-touchdown lead with six. Journey Wyche leads at 7.5 yards per carry. The Mocs gained 310 rushing yards against Wofford and 241 at The Citadel.

Chattanooga is also 2-1 on the road. The limitation is the matchup ahead: those recent rushing totals offer encouragement, but they are no guarantee of another dominant afternoon. If ETSU sustains drives, Chattanooga could need more scoring than its defensive averages suggest.

East Tennessee St. Buccaneers outlook

ETSU presents the strongest argument against the upset forecast through its ability to keep possessions alive. Alongside its conference-leading yardage and third-down figures, the team leads the SoCon with a 72.8% completion rate. Those numbers suggest an offense capable of recovering from occasional unsuccessful plays without abandoning its approach.

Quarterback Mason Mims has an individual completion percentage of 72.2%, also the conference lead. That figure is distinct from the team rate. His accuracy is particularly relevant here because Chattanooga’s pressure can force an offense to execute quickly. Jason Albritton, a conference co-leader with six rushing touchdowns, supplies another scoring threat, although that touchdown count alone says nothing about where those scores originated.

The Buccaneers rank 15th nationally in scoring offense at 36.2 points per game. They also allow a conference-low 4.00 tackles for loss per game. Avoiding those setbacks could keep Chattanooga from turning its recent defensive pressure into control of this matchup.

ETSU beat common opponent West Georgia 35-27 at home; Chattanooga won 24-10 on the road. Those results offer a modest comparison, with Chattanooga allowing fewer points and ETSU scoring more. Different settings and individual game circumstances keep that comparison from carrying the forecast by itself.

Key matchup factors

The pivotal question is whether Chattanooga can create difficult third downs. ETSU’s ability to avoid tackles for loss works directly against the Mocs’ recent strength. If the Buccaneers keep the distance manageable, their conversion rate becomes a compelling reason to expect sustained possessions. If Chattanooga forces longer passing situations, its defensive profile becomes more persuasive.

Possession length matters too. Successful Chattanooga runs could reduce ETSU’s opportunities, but rushing yardage alone cannot tell us how many drives this game will contain. The rivalry history favors the Mocs, who lead the series 28-19-1 and have won six straight. That history adds context; the current pressure-versus-efficiency matchup deserves greater weight.

Chattanooga Mocs vs East Tennessee St. Buccaneers spread prediction

Pass on Chattanooga +3.5 (-153) and ETSU -3.5 (-113). The Mocs are the preferred side of the matchup, and getting more than a field goal fits the close-game forecast. However, -153 requires approximately a 60.5% cover rate to break even. A slight projected advantage is not enough to justify that cost.

ETSU’s accuracy and third-down success create a credible path to a home win by more than three points. Chattanooga’s defense makes laying -3.5 unattractive too. The spread decision remains Pass, even with the Mocs selected to win outright.

Chattanooga Mocs vs East Tennessee St. Buccaneers total prediction

Pass on both Over 53.5 (-130) and Under 53.5 (-125). Chattanooga 27, ETSU 24 totals 51 points, placing the forecast 2.5 points below the line. The Under has a plausible football case through Chattanooga’s defense and the possibility of sustained rushing possessions.

ETSU’s scoring output and drive-extending efficiency are substantial counterweights. Successful third downs could turn otherwise empty possessions into points, while Chattanooga’s recent rushing success offers its own scoring potential. The small projected gap below 53.5 is insufficient to make the Under an official wager at -125.

Chattanooga Mocs vs East Tennessee St. Buccaneers projected score

The final forecast is Chattanooga 27, East Tennessee St. 24. Chattanooga’s combination of defensive efficiency, recent backfield disruption and rushing production earns the narrow preference. The expected route is a competitive game in which the Mocs generate enough defensive stops to make their ground game decisive.

The strongest counterargument is ETSU’s capacity to sustain drives despite that pressure. Mims’ accuracy and the Buccaneers’ third-down performance could put the home team ahead and force Chattanooga away from its preferred approach. Confidence is low because those opposing strengths leave little separation. The official SportsJaw wager is Pass, with both the spread and total also graded Pass at their supplied prices.
