UTSA Roadrunners vs Rice Owls Predictions October 3, 2026

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET

Venue: Rice Stadium — Houston, TX

Article updated Oct 1, 9:05 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

UTSA will beat Rice, with a projected score of UTSA 34, Rice 24, behind the offensive balance it showed in a 542-yard performance against Colorado State. Rice’s productive rushing attack makes the margin less secure. Neither UTSA -11.5 (-110) nor the total of 56 offers a strong enough edge for an actionable wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

UTSA Roadrunners vs Rice Owls prediction and best bet

UTSA’s combination of passing and rushing production earns the winner selection in this American Conference opener. The Roadrunners beat Colorado State 59-45 on Sept. 26, with Owen McCown throwing three touchdown passes. Rice also moved the ball effectively in its last outing, but a 38-24 loss at Fresno State included a difficult second half.

The forecast is UTSA 34, Rice 24. The betting decision is more restrained: Pass. Rice’s rushing output offers a credible challenge, while UTSA’s latest result leaves questions about how comfortably it can win. Those competing factors make laying 11.5 points unattractive, without turning the underdog or Over into an automatic purchase.

UTSA Roadrunners outlook

UTSA’s win over Colorado State featured 542 yards, divided between a season-high 303 passing yards and 239 rushing yards. McCown completed 20 of 30 attempts for 303 yards and three touchdowns. That distribution is the strongest reason to favor the Roadrunners: their latest performance offered production through both parts of the offense, giving Rice more than one problem to address.

Will Henderson III rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries, Brandon High Jr. added 76 on 14, and A’Marion Peterson contributed 60 on six. Each scored a rushing touchdown. Together, those backs accounted for 225 of UTSA’s 239 rushing yards. Their contributions suggest UTSA need not build its entire ground attack around one runner.

The 45 points Colorado State scored temper the enthusiasm. That result warrants caution about a double-digit road spread, although it tells us less about the specific challenge of defending Rice’s rushing attack. Rice coach Scott Abell described UTSA as a preseason conference favorite with an experienced, dangerous offense. His assessment reinforces the offensive case, but the expectation here remains a competitive game rather than an easy UTSA runaway.

Rice Owls outlook

Rice’s 463 yards at Fresno State included 344 rushing yards, a substantial offensive contribution in a game it ultimately lost. Jacurri Brown carried 19 times for a season-high 141 yards and a touchdown. He also completed eight of 17 passes for 119 yards and another score. His rushing production makes him central to Rice’s chance of challenging the favorite.

Receiver Ben Grice added seven carries for a career-high 109 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown. That long score shows the explosive potential in Rice’s ground game. It also matters when interpreting the yardage: one play supplied most of Grice’s total, so the headline rushing figure should not be treated as proof of consistently successful possessions.

The second half supplies the clearest warning. Fresno State outscored Rice 24-7 after halftime, overcoming an offense that had generated considerable yardage. Rice needs its production to translate into more sustained scoring to match the UTSA forecast. Abell said the Owls had gained useful experience and depth while getting healthier entering conference play. That is encouraging context, but the stronger reason to keep Rice competitive is the demonstrated rushing threat from Brown and Grice.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Rice’s ground attack can generate enough points to offset UTSA’s broader offensive production. Explosive runs could help the Owls answer quickly; possessions that consume time without touchdowns would make that trade less favorable. These are competing possibilities, not an established pace forecast.

SportsJaw’s blended total consensus favored Over 56 (-110) at 86%, updated Oct. 2 at 01:00 UTC. That was three percentage points higher than the Sept. 30 snapshot. This is a consensus percentage, not an 86% chance of winning the wager. It captures the preference for scoring but adds no independent measure of either defense or the likely number of possessions.

UTSA Roadrunners vs Rice Owls spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on UTSA -11.5 (-110) and Rice +11.5 (-110). The projected 10-point UTSA victory falls on Rice’s side of the spread, but the 1.5-point difference is too narrow to carry the betting argument.

Rice’s rushing production is a reason to question a comfortable cover by UTSA. The counterweight is Rice’s second-half scoring deficit against Fresno State and UTSA’s success through the air and on the ground. With the case resting heavily on one recent outing apiece, neither side earns a spread wager.

UTSA Roadrunners vs Rice Owls total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 56 (-110) and Under 56 (-110). The projection totals 58 points, putting the forecast slightly above the line. UTSA’s 59-point outing and Rice’s 463 yards explain that direction.

However, yardage and one week’s scoring are a fragile foundation for pricing this total. Rice scored 24 despite its production, including only seven after halftime. A rushing approach could also consume possessions without producing enough points. The two-point cushion in the forecast leaves too little room for those outcomes to make Over the official wager.

UTSA Roadrunners vs Rice Owls projected score

Game forecast: UTSA 34, Rice 24. UTSA gets the winner selection because McCown’s passing production complements a ground game with several contributing backs. Rice’s latest performance was more dependent on rushing, making UTSA the preference if the game requires repeated scoring responses.

The strongest counterargument is Rice’s ability to break a long run, particularly against a team coming off a game in which its opponent scored 45. That keeps the forecast competitive and limits confidence in a decisive margin. Confidence in the winner is medium. Both the spread and total remain passes, and the single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
