Troy Trojans vs James Madison Dukes Predictions October 29, 2026

Game time: October 29, 2026 at 7:30 PM ET

Venue: Bridgeforth Stadium — Harrisonburg, VA

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

James Madison will beat Troy, with a projected score of James Madison 34, Troy 17. The Dukes' balanced offense and stronger scoring defense give them the clearest matchup advantage in this Oct. 29 game. Injuries complicate the three-touchdown spread, however, and neither Troy +21 (-115) nor the 49.5 total offers a strong enough betting case. The official recommendation is Pass.

Troy Trojans vs James Madison Dukes prediction and best bet

James Madison is the pick to win because its advantages extend across both sides of the ball. The Dukes average 41.4 points per game and allow 18.3, compared with Troy's 22.9 scored and 24.9 allowed. Their production through the air and on the ground gives them multiple ways to challenge the Trojans.

The betting decision is less convincing. James Madison must overcome the absences of George Pettaway and Za'Ron Collins, while Troy's recent passing performance makes backing the underdog uncomfortable. A projected 17-point margin favors Troy relative to the spread, but that estimate carries substantial uncertainty. Pass is the best betting decision; James Madison remains the clear forecast winner.

Troy Trojans outlook

Troy's strongest offensive foundation is its ground production. The Trojans average 197.3 rushing yards within their 373.7 total yards per game, with passing accounting for 176.4. That suggests the most plausible route to a respectable offensive night starts with the run. It does not guarantee long possessions, particularly with Troy converting only 33.7% of third downs, 113th in FBS.

The latest result illustrates the concern. Troy lost 21-14 to UL Monroe on Oct. 24, when quarterback Will 'Goose' Crowder completed six of 14 passes for 50 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Jordan Lovett carried 17 times for 70 yards, but his three receptions produced minus-10 yards. The rushing contribution was not enough to lift Troy beyond 14 points.

Crowder is listed as probable after dealing with a shoulder issue, according to RotoWire's Oct. 26 report citing Sun Belt availability information. His expected availability helps, although probable status says nothing about how effectively he will throw.

Defensively, Troy allows 334.7 yards and 24.9 points per game. Those averages offer some resistance to the blowout case. Still, its minus-1 turnover margin and inconsistent scoring leave little room for mistakes against James Madison.

James Madison Dukes outlook

James Madison's season offense supplies the strongest reason to favor the home team. The Dukes average 456.3 total yards, 18th in FBS, with 249.1 passing yards and 207.1 rushing yards per game. Their 41.4-point scoring average ranks fifth. That balance makes the win projection less dependent on success from one offensive component.

Their most recent game also supplies a warning. James Madison lost 34-31 at Appalachian State on Oct. 22. Camden Coleman completed 22 of 39 passes for 232 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Braeden Wisloski contributed two catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. The offense produced 31 points, but that was insufficient to prevent the defeat.

Pettaway's absence matters because he accounted for 43% of James Madison's carries over its last three games. He rushed 15 times for 57 yards and a touchdown at Appalachian State. Seth Cromwell had 22% of the carries across that three-game window, although those shares do not specify Thursday's workload. Collins is also listed out; his absence adds uncertainty without a quantified production loss.

The defense offers a firmer foundation for the forecast: James Madison allows 18.3 points per game, 25th in FBS. Its team turnover margin is plus-6, another favorable season indicator.

Key matchup factors

Third down is an important test of Troy's ability to stay competitive. The Trojans' 33.7% conversion rate is poor, but James Madison allows opponents to convert 37.8%, ranking 70th. That matchup is less overwhelming than the teams' scoring averages might suggest. Troy has an opening to extend drives if its early-down execution improves.

Rest also favors James Madison in calendar terms: the Dukes last played Oct. 22, while Troy played Oct. 24 before this Thursday meeting. That difference does not quantify a performance advantage. More consequential is whether James Madison can redistribute Pettaway's substantial rushing workload without losing efficiency. Its season balance supports optimism, while the personnel changes argue against assuming the usual scoring output.

Troy Trojans vs James Madison Dukes spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Troy +21 (-115) and James Madison -21 (-105). The projected 17-point margin falls on Troy's side, but the underdog's case depends heavily on sustaining offense after a 50-yard passing performance from Crowder.

James Madison's injuries make laying 21 less appealing, yet they are not enough by themselves to make Troy a value bet. A large Dukes win remains plausible if Troy repeatedly stalls or loses possessions to turnovers. Neither side offers a sufficiently dependable edge at these prices.

Troy Trojans vs James Madison Dukes total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 49.5 (-112) and Under 49.5 (-108). The projected 51 points sit only 1.5 above the line, a narrow difference for a game with meaningful offensive uncertainty.

James Madison's scoring average and Troy's defensive allowance favor the Over argument. Pettaway's absence, Crowder's recent struggles and the Dukes' 18.3 points allowed per game pull toward the Under. The forecast anticipates some scoring from both teams, but it offers too little separation from 49.5 to justify either wager.

Troy Trojans vs James Madison Dukes projected score

The forecast is James Madison 34, Troy 17, with medium confidence. The Dukes' offensive balance and lower points allowed make them the stronger choice to win. Troy's rushing production gives it a plausible source of offense, but its third-down struggles and latest passing result limit expectations.

The strongest counterargument is James Madison's changed personnel. Removing a back responsible for 43% of recent carries introduces uncertainty into an offense coming off a loss. That matters more to the projected margin than to the winner selection. James Madison should prevail, but the spread and total remain separate decisions. Both are a Pass, and the single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
