Jacksonville St. Gamecocks vs New Mexico St. Aggies Predictions October 28, 2026

Game time: October 28, 2026 at 8:00 PM ET

Venue: Aggie Memorial Stadium — Las Cruces, NM

Article updated Oct 25, 10:11 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Jacksonville State will beat New Mexico State, 27-24, with Caden Creel's passing efficiency and rushing production giving the Gamecocks a narrow offensive advantage. James Jones and the Aggies' run defense make this a low-confidence forecast. Jacksonville State -3 (-109) offers no cushion against that projected margin, and neither the spread nor the 49.5 total earns an actionable wager. The official pick is Pass.

Jacksonville St. Gamecocks vs New Mexico St. Aggies prediction and best bet

Jacksonville State gets the nod because its offensive advantage extends beyond one recent result. The Gamecocks average 390.6 yards and 27.3 points, compared with New Mexico State's 371.7 yards and 24.6 points. Creel's contributions as a passer and runner offer multiple ways to sustain that advantage, even against a defense that has been effective against the run.

The strongest objection comes when the Aggies have possession. Jones presents a serious test for a Jacksonville State defense allowing conversions on 45.8% of opponents' third downs. New Mexico State has a credible route to an upset, leaving the forecast at Jacksonville State 27, New Mexico State 24. Best bet: Pass.

Jacksonville St. Gamecocks outlook

Creel gives Jacksonville State its strongest reason for optimism. Entering this matchup, he has completed 67.2% of his passes for 1,637 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has 500 rushing yards on 105 carries. That combination gives the offense an alternative when a designed run or initial passing opportunity fails, although his interception total matters against an opponent with a sustained record of forcing turnovers.

The October 13 win over FIU illustrates his involvement. Creel completed 16 of 22 passes for 214 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while adding 95 yards on 19 carries. Jacksonville State can ask him to contribute in both phases, but New Mexico State's rushing defense makes repeating that ground production a demanding assignment.

The Gamecocks average 150.1 rushing yards per game. Their bigger concern here may be defending the other team's rushing attack. At his October 23 press conference, coach Charles Kelly described New Mexico State as the toughest rushing opponent Jacksonville State had encountered to that point.

Jacksonville State used its open week to work on alignment, eye discipline and technique. Those priorities fit this matchup: sound assignments against Jones could keep manageable third downs from becoming another recurring problem.

New Mexico St. Aggies outlook

New Mexico State enters after a 30-24 win over Sam Houston on October 21. The Aggies outgained the Bearkats 363-246, rushed for 203 yards and allowed just 11 rushing yards on 20 carries. They were 3-0 in games with more than 200 rushing yards after that result. That record highlights a successful formula, although reaching the threshold against Jacksonville State is a separate challenge.

Jones supplied 178 of those rushing yards on 27 carries and scored once. His season totals entering the Jacksonville State matchup are 777 yards on 119 attempts with four touchdowns; the Sam Houston performance is included in those figures. Kelly identified Jones as Conference USA's rushing leader during the October 23 press conference.

Adam Damante completed 19 of 29 passes for 160 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Sam Houston. Those passing scores show why Jacksonville State must account for more than Jones, even with the running game commanding attention.

Defensively, the Aggies allow 109.1 rushing yards per game, ranking 30th in FBS. Their October 21 recap listed 17 season sacks, second in Conference USA, and a takeaway in 22 of their previous 23 games. Those are meaningful challenges for Creel, particularly if Jacksonville State falls into obvious passing situations.

Key matchup factors

Third down could determine whether Jones' rushing production translates into control of the game. Jacksonville State ranks 127th in FBS in defensive third-down conversion rate, but New Mexico State converts only 37.8%, ranking 88th. The defensive weakness is real; the Aggies still have to exploit it.

SportsJaw's combined moneyline consensus favors Jacksonville State 480 to 120 in a modeled equivalent sample of 600 selections, updated October 26 at 02:01 UTC. The blended leader is Jacksonville State at 80%. These figures describe selection support, not an 80% chance of winning or observed sportsbook ticket totals. They offer context for the favorite's popularity, without making New Mexico State an automatic value bet.

Jacksonville St. Gamecocks vs New Mexico St. Aggies spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Jacksonville State -3 (-109) and New Mexico State +3 (-111). The Gamecocks' higher scoring and yardage averages support picking them to win, but the projected three-point margin would push either spread.

The Aggies' run defense and Jones' production make laying the points uncomfortable. Taking New Mexico State also requires more than identifying reasons the game could stay close. Creel's passing efficiency remains a substantial obstacle for the home underdog. Neither side has enough of an edge at the supplied line to justify a wager.

Jacksonville St. Gamecocks vs New Mexico St. Aggies total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 49.5 (-110) and Under 49.5 (-110). The projected 51 points lean above the number. Both teams' scoring averages and Jacksonville State's third-down defensive struggles give the Over a plausible case.

The counterweight is New Mexico State's run defense, which could disrupt Jacksonville State's offense. Sustained rushing possessions could also reduce scoring opportunities if the clock keeps moving. Neither outcome is assured. A projection only 1.5 points above the total leaves too little room for uncertainty, and scoring averages alone are insufficient grounds for an Over bet.

Jacksonville St. Gamecocks vs New Mexico St. Aggies projected score

Game forecast: Jacksonville State 27, New Mexico State 24. Creel's production in both phases and the Gamecocks' higher offensive averages make Jacksonville State the narrow choice. The expectation is that its passing game supplies enough offense to overcome resistance on the ground.

Jones is the strongest counterargument. If his carries repeatedly leave short third downs, Jacksonville State's defensive weakness could outweigh its offensive advantage. The Aggies' ability to limit rushing yards and generate takeaways adds another credible path to a different result.

Confidence is low because those competing strengths are significant. Jacksonville State remains the projected winner; both the spread and total recommendations are Pass. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
