Montana St. Bobcats vs Idaho Vandals Predictions Today

Game time: October 2, 2026 at 10:30 PM ET

Venue: Kibbie Dome — Moscow, ID

Article updated Oct 1, 11:04 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Montana State will beat Idaho, with a projected final of Bobcats 34, Vandals 24. Patrick Duchien’s production against Northern Arizona gives the unbeaten visitors a credible offensive answer despite three confirmed absences. Idaho’s productive passing game and recent close losses make a 17-point spread demanding. Neither Montana State -17 (-115) nor the 58.5 total offers a strong enough edge; the official recommendation is Pass.

Montana St. Bobcats vs Idaho Vandals prediction and best bet

Montana State has the stronger winning case because its replacement quarterback delivered through the air and on the ground against Northern Arizona. Duchien’s performance, supported by Colson Coon and Carter Dahlke, gives the Bobcats multiple ways to move the ball with Justin Lamson, Taco Dowler and Adam Jones ruled out.

That supports picking Montana State to win, but laying 17 points asks considerably more. Idaho averaged 30.0 points against three FCS opponents and lost its two games before the bye by eight combined points. Those facts make a competitive game plausible. The best betting decision is Pass: Montana State’s winning edge looks firmer than its chances of covering this spread.

Montana St. Bobcats outlook

Montana State’s October 1 preview confirmed that Lamson, Taco Dowler and Jones would miss this game. The offensive forecast therefore depends heavily on how well the players who stepped forward against Northern Arizona can repeat their production. One successful outing is encouraging, although it leaves uncertainty about consistency.

Duchien completed 16 of 20 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and one interception on September 26. He also gained 77 yards on nine carries and scored twice rushing. Coon added 197 rushing yards, according to Montana State’s matchup preview, while Dahlke produced 117 receiving yards. Those individual performances explain why the Bobcats remain the forecast winner despite the absences.

The defensive evidence also favors Montana State. The Bobcats beat FBS Nevada 20-7 in Week 2 and led for nearly 57 minutes. Through five games, five different defenders had interceptions, while Cole Taylor, Colter Petre and Zac Crews combined for 91 tackles.

Caden Dowler and Dom Solano missed the Northern Arizona game, but their Friday availability is unconfirmed here. Their previous absences add uncertainty without justifying an assumption that either will miss Idaho. Overall, Montana State has enough demonstrated production to earn the winning pick, with less certainty about the margin.

Idaho Vandals outlook

Idaho’s winless record sits alongside an offense that has been productive against FCS opposition. Montana State’s preview puts the Vandals at 30.0 points and 407 yards per game across three such matchups. That sample matters: these are FCS-opponent averages, rather than figures covering all four games.

Joshua Wood averaged 251.3 passing yards and 24.5 rushing yards per game and accounted for nine total touchdowns. The Big Sky’s weekly table ranked his passing average 14th in the FCS. Tony Harste led Idaho’s receivers with 96.0 yards per game, giving Wood a productive target for challenging Montana State.

The offensive line also brings experience. Returning starters Layton Vining, Charlie Vliem, Kiegan Henson and Leon Evans entered 2026 with 83 combined career starts. That background is a reason to respect Idaho’s offense, although it guarantees neither protection nor sustained drives against this defense.

Idaho returns from a bye after losing its previous two games by eight combined points. Its passing yards allowed declined each game, reaching a season-low 148 against Abilene Christian. The concern is creating extra possessions: Montana State’s preview credited Idaho with only one takeaway on the season. The Vandals can threaten this forecast through offensive execution, but an upset may require more defensive impact.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Idaho can contain Duchien’s rushing contribution while defending the passing game. His Northern Arizona performance gives Montana State flexibility, but repeating that efficiency away from home with important teammates unavailable is a meaningful test.

Possession swings could matter just as much. Montana State’s five interceptions and Idaho’s lone takeaway favor the Bobcats on that measure, although neither figure predicts Friday’s turnover margin.

SportsJaw’s October 2 update at approximately 12:30 a.m. UTC showed Montana State -17 (-115) leading community spread picks at 61% and qualified handicapper picks at 59%. Under 58.5 (-114) led both groups at 63%. Those are pick preferences, not win probabilities or sportsbook betting shares.

Montana St. Bobcats vs Idaho Vandals spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Montana State -17 (-115) and Idaho +17 (-115). The projected 10-point Montana State win points toward Idaho relative to the line, but the case is too fragile to turn that difference into an official wager.

Idaho’s scoring production, rest and recent narrow defeats argue against laying 17. Montana State’s unbeaten record, versatile replacement quarterback and defensive takeaways argue against confidently backing the underdog. A cover also depends on late possessions and scoring opportunities that the evidence leaves difficult to judge. Neither side earns a bet at -115.

Montana St. Bobcats vs Idaho Vandals total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 58.5 (-116) and Under 58.5 (-114). The projected 58 points sit only half a point below the line, far too close for the score estimate alone to justify an Under wager.

Idaho’s 30.0-point average against FCS opponents and Montana State’s recent individual offensive performances offer credible scoring paths. The Bobcats’ absences and their defensive showing against Nevada pull the assessment lower. Without firmer evidence about pace or possession volume, the competing factors leave too much uncertainty to back either direction at the supplied price.

Montana St. Bobcats vs Idaho Vandals projected score

Game forecast: Montana State Bobcats 34, Idaho Vandals 24. Montana State gets the nod because Duchien, Coon and Dahlke showed they could produce despite significant offensive absences, while the defense has supplied contributions from several players.

The strongest counterargument is Idaho’s offense. Wood’s passing production, Harste’s receiving output and an experienced line give the rested hosts a credible route to challenge the favorite. Montana State’s injuries also make a comfortable victory less certain than its record might suggest.

Confidence is medium in the winner forecast. The projected margin falls short of 17, and the combined score lands near 58.5. Both markets remain passes. The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.
