Navy Midshipmen vs UTSA Roadrunners prediction, odds and best bet for Oct. 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 8:00 PM ET

Venue: Alamodome — San Antonio, TX

Article updated Oct 16, 10:42 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The UTSA Roadrunners will beat the Navy Midshipmen 31-24, with their recent conference defense providing the strongest matchup edge. UTSA has held both American opponents below 300 yards, but Navy’s rushing production and second-half defensive strength make separation less certain. Neither UTSA -6.5 (-116) nor the total of 55.5 (-110) offers enough value for an actionable wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

Navy Midshipmen vs UTSA Roadrunners prediction and best bet

UTSA gets the nod because its defensive results against conference opponents give it a credible answer to Navy’s productive offense. The Roadrunners also bring a strong home record into this matchup. Those advantages support a UTSA victory, although Navy has enough offensive upside to make the favorite work through the fourth quarter.

Best bet: Pass. Picking UTSA to win is easier than backing it to cover -6.5 (-116). The total is similarly tight: a projection of 55 points sits almost directly on 55.5, and the recent results include enough scoring to temper an Under recommendation.

Navy Midshipmen outlook

Quarterback Jackson Gutierrez gives Navy its clearest route to an upset. He has rushed for 505 yards and seven touchdowns on 102 carries this season, alongside 439 passing yards and four passing touchdowns on 22 completions in 47 attempts. His production makes containing the quarterback a central assignment for UTSA.

Gutierrez delivered a career-high 232 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the October 10 win over Tulsa. He carried 41 times and added 95 yards and a touchdown through the air. Navy finished with 386 rushing yards and 481 total yards, showing how much offense it can generate when its ground game succeeds.

Ball security nearly spoiled that performance. Navy lost three fumbles and threw an interception, yet recovered from a 12-point second-half deficit to win 34-26. The defense allowed just six points following those four turnovers. That rescue was impressive, but another turnover-heavy game would put considerable pressure on Navy to repeat it.

For the season, the Midshipmen average 401.4 yards and 27.0 points while allowing 322.0 yards and 23.4 points per game. Their ability to produce offense deserves weight even with a losing record.

UTSA Roadrunners outlook

UTSA’s October 8 victory over South Florida supplied an encouraging offensive development: a season-high 277 rushing yards. The Roadrunners gained 70 yards on the ground during their winning 75-yard drive, finishing a 31-24 victory with a touchdown and 15 seconds remaining.

That finish involved several contributors. Quarterback Owen McCown scrambled for gains of 19 and eight yards, Will Henderson III ran 26 yards to the goal line, and A'Marion Peterson scored the decisive touchdown. For this forecast, that sequence strengthens the case that UTSA can create a scoring drive without relying entirely on its passing game.

The defensive results are equally useful. Rice gained 232 total yards against UTSA, and South Florida managed 288. Linebacker Brandon Tucker leads the Roadrunners with 46 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.

UTSA is 3-0 at home this season and 36-5 at the Alamodome under Jeff Traylor since 2020. That history supports the home favorite, although it is a broader indicator than a direct measure of how this defense will handle Gutierrez.

Key matchup factors

The decisive question is how much of Navy’s rushing success carries over against UTSA. Limiting Rice and South Florida is encouraging, but those results are not a guarantee against this opponent. Navy’s quarterback-driven production presents a specific test that the Roadrunners still have to pass.

Navy’s late-game defense is the strongest reason to expect a competitive finish. Entering Saturday, the Midshipmen had allowed 5.0 second-half points per game against FBS opponents. They have also played four consecutive one-score games, going 1-3. Those results suggest competitiveness without making a close finish inevitable.

SportsJaw’s October 16 consensus update shows UTSA -6.5 (-116) leading the blended spread at 60 percent, up 13 percentage points from the October 15 snapshot. SportsJaw members favor Navy +6.5 (+101) at 67 percent, while the sportsbook split favors UTSA at 67 percent. The disagreement matters: the combined preference is not a unanimous view, and these selection shares are not win probabilities.

Navy Midshipmen vs UTSA Roadrunners spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Navy +6.5 (+101) and UTSA -6.5 (-116). The projected seven-point UTSA victory clears the favorite’s spread by only half a point. That is too little room to treat a plausible game forecast as a strong betting edge.

Navy’s recent close games and second-half defense make the underdog attractive in principle. Still, +6.5 leaves a seven-point loss uncovered, and UTSA’s home performance and recent defensive results keep me from selecting Navy at this price. Neither side earns an official wager.

Navy Midshipmen vs UTSA Roadrunners total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 55.5 (-110) and Under 55.5 (-110). Navy’s scoring defense and UTSA’s recent yardage limits support a restrained scoring forecast, but the offensive counterarguments are substantial. Navy’s latest game produced 60 combined points, while UTSA’s win over South Florida produced 55.

SportsJaw members favor Under 55.5 (-110) at 100 percent in the October 14 community update. That is a member preference, not a sportsbook total split or a measure of certainty. With the projected score totaling 55, the Under has too narrow a cushion to justify paying -110.

Navy Midshipmen vs UTSA Roadrunners Projected Score & Betting Picks

Game forecast: UTSA Roadrunners 31, Navy Midshipmen 24. Confidence: medium. UTSA’s conference defensive results and home record support an ordinary, credible edge. Navy’s explosive rushing performance against Tulsa and its second-half defensive strength are the strongest counterarguments.

Expect UTSA to win a competitive game, with limited separation between the forecast and both betting lines. The spread and total are passes. Official SportsJaw betting lean: Pass.
