Northern Illinois Huskies vs Wyoming Cowboys Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 3:30 PM ET

Venue: War Memorial Stadium — Laramie, WY

Article updated Oct 12, 8:49 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Wyoming is the pick to beat Northern Illinois 23-17 on Oct. 17, with its recent defensive performance against San José State providing the strongest reason to favor the Cowboys. Northern Illinois enters after a 28-7 defeat, but Wyoming’s own narrow overtime victory tempers expectations. Neither Wyoming -8 (-110) nor the total of 40.5 (-110) offers a compelling wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs Wyoming Cowboys prediction and best bet

Wyoming gets the winner pick because its latest performance offers more encouragement defensively. The Cowboys contained an important San José State rushing threat and delivered an overtime stop. Northern Illinois heads into this matchup after allowing Air Force to overwhelm its run defense.

The forecast is Wyoming 23, Northern Illinois 17, with low confidence. That favors the Cowboys outright while leaving the Huskies inside the eight-point spread. The official best-bet decision is Pass: the recent results suggest a Wyoming advantage, but the size of that advantage is much less certain.

Northern Illinois Huskies outlook

NIU’s Oct. 10 conference opener ended in a 28-7 loss to Air Force, which rushed for 439 yards. That is a substantial defensive concern entering another conference game, although it should not become an automatic prediction of Wyoming’s rushing production.

Taron Dickens completed 13 of 20 passes for 140 yards. DeAree Rogers accounted for seven catches and 81 yards, making him the central receiving contributor in that game. Their connection offers a route toward offensive improvement, but those completions accompanied only seven team points.

Telly Johnson Jr. added 47 rushing yards on eight carries and scored his third touchdown of 2026. He had reached the end zone in consecutive games. For the Huskies, the encouraging pieces are identifiable: production from Johnson and a productive Dickens-Rogers connection. Turning those contributions into more scoring is the challenge.

Wyoming Cowboys outlook

Wyoming beat San José State 16-13 in overtime on Oct. 9. The Cowboys held Jamari Bates, identified in their recap as the Mountain West’s leading rusher, to 69 yards on 16 attempts. They also stopped the Spartans on downs to begin overtime.

The offense supplied a crucial response with an 18-play, 75-yard touchdown possession that tied the score at 13 with 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. That drive demonstrated an ability to sustain a possession under pressure, though Wyoming finished regulation with just 13 points.

Erik Sandvik made three field goals, including the winning 21-yarder, and stood at 8-for-8 for the season. Tyler Hughes set up the overtime kick with a 12-yard run to the 2-yard line. Reliable kicking strengthens Wyoming’s case in a close finish; it offers less assurance of the touchdown margin needed to cover.

Key matchup factors

The defensive comparison favors Wyoming, but the opponents matter. Limiting one leading runner and struggling against another team’s rushing attack are useful recent signals, not equivalent tests. The forecast gives Wyoming credit for its performance without assuming NIU will concede another enormous rushing total.

Finishing possessions is the other key distinction. Wyoming’s late touchdown drive and successful kicks offer reasons to trust it in a competitive game. The counterweight is how little separation the Cowboys achieved: their latest victory required overtime. That tension makes an outright pick easier than a spread bet.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs Wyoming Cowboys spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Wyoming -8 (-110) and Northern Illinois +8 (-110). A six-point projected margin falls on the NIU side of the number, but the difference is too fragile to justify a wager.

Wyoming’s defensive showing supports favoritism. Its 13 regulation points against San José State invite caution about laying eight. NIU’s winless record and severe rushing struggles also make taking the points uncomfortable. Neither side has a strong enough case at the supplied price.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs Wyoming Cowboys total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 40.5 (-110) and Under 40.5 (-110). The 23-17 forecast totals 40 points, only half a point below the line.

The latest games offer a lower-scoring argument, but one result per team is a narrow foundation. NIU’s defensive problems introduce a competing risk if Wyoming converts possessions into touchdowns. Sandvik’s recent success adds another scoring route. The forecast sits too close to 40.5 to make Under an official play.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs Wyoming Cowboys projected score

Game forecast: Wyoming Cowboys 23, Northern Illinois Huskies 17. Wyoming’s recent defense and successful late-game execution earn the selection. Its modest regulation scoring is the strongest counterargument and keeps confidence low.

Official SportsJaw wager: Pass. Wyoming is the projected winner, while both the eight-point spread and 40.5 total remain passes at the supplied prices.
