Game time: October 10, 2026 at 4:00 PM ET

Venue: Hillsboro Stadium — Portland, OR

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Portland State is the pick to beat Utah Tech, Portland State 37, Utah Tech 31, behind Delon Thompson’s favorable rushing matchup against the Trailblazers’ struggling run defense. Utah Tech’s recent offensive improvement and the Vikings’ defensive problems make a close game plausible. Over 61.5 (-125) is the strongest actionable wager, while Utah Tech +9.5 (-113) is the spread recommendation.

Utah Tech vs Portland St. Vikings prediction and best bet

Portland State gets the winner pick because its rushing attack matches up well with Utah Tech’s most persistent defensive problem. Four of the Trailblazers’ first six opponents ran for at least 200 yards. Thompson enters this matchup after rushing for 213 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings’ September 26 win at Weber State.

The stronger betting case is Over 61.5 (-125). Portland State’s defense has surrendered substantial yardage, too, giving Utah Tech a plausible route to keeping this competitive. The forecast calls for both offenses to contribute, with the Vikings winning by six. That also favors Utah Tech +9.5 (-113), although the total is the single official wager.

Utah Tech outlook

Utah Tech’s October 3 loss to Southern Utah offered an encouraging offensive performance despite the 46-33 result. The Trailblazers set season highs with 572 total yards, 391 passing yards and 181 rushing yards. That balance matters here: their case for staying close does not rest entirely on one receiver or one type of play.

Ace Chatman rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, adding four catches for 28 yards and two receiving scores. His four total touchdowns tied the program’s NCAA-era single-game record. His production in both roles gives Utah Tech a useful option against a defense struggling to limit yardage.

The quarterback situation carries more uncertainty. Deacon Hill made his first start of 2026 and completed 9 of 17 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown before leaving late in the second quarter with an injury. Bronson Barben, previously the regular starter, completed 11 of 21 for 165 yards and a touchdown in relief. That performance keeps an offensive contribution plausible even with the starting role unsettled.

Mike Williams supplied a career-high 160 receiving yards on three catches. The concern is whether Utah Tech can turn another productive offensive day into a win while its run defense remains vulnerable. Southern Utah rushed for 344 yards, leaving the Trailblazers with a difficult assignment against Thompson.

Portland St. Vikings outlook

Portland State beat Weber State 44-41 on September 26 with 248 rushing yards and 409 total yards. Thompson handled 23 carries, making him the central figure in that ground attack. Repeating that workload would give the Vikings a straightforward way to test Utah Tech’s defense.

Terence Loville offers a productive receiving option. Through five games, he had 22 catches for 401 yards and two touchdowns, including five receptions for 130 yards and a score at Weber State. John-Keawe Sagapolutele started that game, becoming Portland State’s third different starting quarterback in five games.

The defense presents a sharp contrast between takeaways and yards allowed. Portland State forced six turnovers at Weber State and had 11 for the season. In its October 5 preview, the school listed that total as second in the Big Sky and 14th in FCS. Safety Isaac Redford led the Vikings with 40 tackles and two interceptions through five games.

Yet Portland State had also allowed at least 600 total yards to each of its previous three opponents and was conceding 567.6 yards per game. Takeaways can interrupt scoring opportunities, but counting on another six-turnover performance would be an aggressive assumption. Those defensive numbers are the main reason to resist a comfortable-win forecast.

Key matchup factors

The most useful distinction is between a repeatable matchup opportunity and a volatile result. Thompson can repeatedly attack Utah Tech’s run defense. Portland State has less control over whether it recovers enough turnovers to offset another day of giving up yardage. The forecast gives greater weight to the rushing matchup than to another takeaway surge.

Quarterback uncertainty cuts both ways. Utah Tech showed it could produce passing yards with Hill and Barben against Southern Utah, but Hill’s injury adds uncertainty to this week’s outlook. Portland State’s changes at quarterback also argue against treating its most recent scoring output as a dependable baseline.

This is the programs’ first football meeting, according to Utah Tech’s preview. There is no previous matchup result to weigh against the current evidence. The strongest counterargument to the home favorite remains Utah Tech’s ability to exploit Portland State’s defensive weaknesses.

Utah Tech vs Portland St. Vikings spread prediction

The spread recommendation is Utah Tech +9.5 (-113). Portland State has the better rushing matchup, but its defensive performance creates room for the Trailblazers to remain within one possession. A projected six-point margin gives Utah Tech a modest cushion against the supplied spread.

This is the secondary recommendation because Utah Tech’s defensive problems also create a clear path to a larger loss. If Thompson sustains drives and the Vikings generate additional possessions through takeaways, Portland State could cover -9.5 (-113). The underdog’s latest offensive performance makes taking the points preferable, without making Utah Tech the outright winner pick.

Utah Tech vs Portland St. Vikings total prediction

Over 61.5 (-125) is the total recommendation and official best bet. The case combines Utah Tech’s repeated difficulties against the run with Portland State’s broader defensive struggles. Each offense has a specific weakness to attack, and the projected 68 points sits 6.5 points above the line.

The -125 price requires restraint. Yardage does not guarantee touchdowns, and quarterback uncertainty could disrupt either offense. Still, Utah Tech scored 33 in its latest game, while Portland State scored 44 in its win at Weber State. Alongside the defensive evidence, those performances support the Over more strongly than either spread side.

Utah Tech vs Portland St. Vikings projected score

Game forecast: Portland State 37, Utah Tech 31. Thompson’s matchup gives the Vikings the deciding advantage, while Utah Tech’s offensive improvement offers the strongest challenge to that pick. Confidence is low because unsettled quarterback situations and vulnerable defenses leave considerable room for the game to swing.

Utah Tech +9.5 (-113) is the spread recommendation. Over 61.5 (-125) is the total recommendation and the single official SportsJaw wager.
