Virginia Tech Hokies vs California Golden Bears Predictions October 10, 2026

Game time: October 10, 2026 at 3:30 PM ET

Venue: California Memorial Stadium — Berkeley, CA

Article updated Oct 5, 12:16 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Virginia Tech will beat California 31-27 in our October 10 forecast, with Ethan Grunkemeyer’s repeated passing production supplying the strongest edge. California’s productive passing offense and unsettled quarterback situation make the projected margin less secure. Neither Virginia Tech -9.5 (-110) nor the total of 53.5 (-110) offers a strong enough betting edge, so the official recommendation is Pass.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs California Golden Bears prediction and best bet

Virginia Tech is the pick to win this 2026 college football matchup. Grunkemeyer has three 300-yard passing games this season, giving the Hokies a repeatable offensive strength to carry into Berkeley. California’s recent offensive production makes a close finish plausible, keeping confidence in the forecast low.

The best betting decision is Pass. A competitive, relatively high-scoring game is the projection, but California’s quarterback uncertainty leaves considerable room around that estimate. Picking Virginia Tech to win requires less conviction than backing either team against a 9.5-point spread.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Kickoff: Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. PT and 3:30 p.m. ET.

Venue: Databricks Field at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California, during California’s Homecoming / Alumni & Parents Weekend.

Broadcast: California’s September 28 announcement and Virginia Tech’s October 2 recap listed ESPN2 or ACC Network.

Virginia Tech record: 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC following its first loss of the season.

SportsJaw odds: Virginia Tech -360 and California +280 on the moneyline. Spread: Virginia Tech -9.5 (-110), California +9.5 (-110). Total: Over 53.5 (-110), Under 53.5 (-110).

Virginia Tech Hokies outlook

Grunkemeyer threw for 434 yards in the October 2 loss to Pittsburgh, the second-highest recorded single-game passing total in Virginia Tech history. His third 300-yard outing of 2026 strengthens the case that the Hokies can generate offense through the air beyond one exceptional afternoon.

The receiving production was distributed across useful targets. Que’Sean Brown had six first-half catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. Ayden Greene finished with four receptions for 88 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the season.

Those performances still ended in a 35-33 home loss. Virginia Tech’s scoring potential is persuasive, but that result cautions against assuming offensive output will deliver a comfortable margin. Defensive end Aycen Stevens offers a disruptive element after extending his streak to five consecutive games with at least one solo sack.

California Golden Bears outlook

California produced 464 total yards, including 395 passing yards, in its October 3 loss at UNLV. Those passing yards belonged to the Bears’ offense. Their rally from a 24-7 deficit late in the third quarter to a 25-24 fourth-quarter lead showed how quickly that offense could change a game.

The quarterback situation is central. Jackson Brousseau replaced injured Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele late in the first half and completed 19 of 32 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Coach Tosh Lupoi said Sagapolutele received medical clearance to return but remained out because Lupoi was concerned after seeing him wobble leaving the field.

That account leaves the October 10 starting assignment uncertain. Brousseau’s performance is encouraging if he plays again, while Taimane Purcell’s 91-yard first-quarter touchdown reception illustrates California’s big-play potential. The 39-31 defeat also shows that a substantial rally need not translate into a win.

Key matchup factors

The strongest distinction is continuity of passing production. Virginia Tech has multiple substantial games from Grunkemeyer, while California’s latest performance involved a midgame quarterback change. That favors the Hokies in the forecast without implying a verified weakness in California’s pass coverage.

The combined moneyline consensus also favors Virginia Tech: 426 of 600 modeled equivalent selections, or 71%, as of October 5 at 04:04 UTC. These are modeled consensus counts, not observed sportsbook tickets or a standalone SportsJaw member tally. The percentage measures selection share, not Virginia Tech’s chance of winning or this forecast’s confidence.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs California Golden Bears spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass Virginia Tech -9.5 (-110) and California +9.5 (-110). The projected four-point margin points toward California, but the uncertainty surrounding its quarterback makes that cushion less dependable than the score suggests.

Virginia Tech’s passing production supports the outright pick. California’s offensive response at UNLV supplies the counterargument to a double-digit win. Neither recent performance is enough to turn the projected margin into a confident spread wager.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs California Golden Bears total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass Over 53.5 (-110) and Under 53.5 (-110). The projected 58 points put the directional lean above the total, with both offenses coming off games featuring substantial passing yardage.

The restraint comes from how much that projection depends on California sustaining its production through an uncertain quarterback situation. Two high-scoring recent results offer a reason to consider the Over, but they are a narrow foundation for pricing this matchup. The scoring forecast stays above 53.5; the official total recommendation remains Pass.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs California Golden Bears projected score

Game forecast: Virginia Tech Hokies 31, California Golden Bears 27. Grunkemeyer’s repeated production gives Virginia Tech the edge, while California’s passing output and successful relief quarterback performance are the strongest reasons to expect resistance.

Confidence: Low. California has a credible route to an upset, and its quarterback assignment matters to both margin and scoring. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
