Ohio St. Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes recently ended a five-game losing streak with a victory against the struggling Maryland team. Despite their recent struggles, the Buckeyes are still outside the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. Their upcoming game against Wisconsin presents an opportunity to improve their chances. The Buckeyes' win over Maryland was led by sophomore guard Bruce Thornton, who scored 24 points and contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Roddy Gayle Jr. also made a significant impact with 17 points and strong defensive play. Ohio State's defense limited Maryland to a 39% shooting percentage, although the Buckeyes themselves struggled with 24% shooting from beyond the arc. Despite being outrebounded and playing a lengthy game, the Buckeyes only turned the ball over nine times.

In terms of rankings, Ohio State is currently ranked 64th overall by KenPom and ranks 126th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. Their defensive performance has been a concern, although their performance against Maryland cannot be taken as an accurate reflection, considering Maryland's offensive struggles. Thornton leads the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game, while Gayle Jr. contributes 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. The Buckeyes allow an average of 70 points per game on 43.2% shooting, with their three-point defense being a weak point at 36%.

Looking at their overall performance, Ohio State has a power ranking of 298. They rank 156th in offense, scoring an average of 75.09 points per game, and 142nd in defense, allowing an average of 70.64 points per game. The team has a record of 13-10 this season, with an 8-15 against the spread record. Offensively, the Buckeyes shoot 44.56% from the field, 76.24% from the free-throw line, and 33.26% from beyond the arc. They average 37.18 rebounds, 13.59 offensive assists, and 10.23 turnovers per game. Defensively, Ohio State allows 43.64% shooting from the field, 70.16% from the free-throw line, and 35.66% from beyond the arc. They average 33.91 defensive rebounds, 11.23 defensive assists, and 10.05 turnovers per game.

Wisconsin Badgers Analysis

The Wisconsin Badgers currently hold a ranking of 21 in the NCAA Net Rankings and are considered in good position to make the NCAA Tournament. However, their recent performance has been less than satisfactory, as they have lost four consecutive games. This losing streak began with a 16-point lead blown in a loss to Nebraska, followed by a 22-point loss to Rutgers. Coach Greg Gard expressed disappointment in the team's lack of aggression and tentative reaction to pressure.

Leading the Badgers in scoring is A.J. Storr, a transfer wing from St. John's, averaging 16.4 points per game. Tyler Wahl contributes 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. In terms of team statistics, the Badgers rank 18th overall according to KenPom and 15th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency. However, their defense has been lacking, ranking poorly in three-point defense and field goal defense.

The team's offense averages 74.3 points per game, shooting 46.4% from the field and 34.1% from beyond the arc. On the other hand, their defense allows opponents to shoot at a 45.2% field goal percentage and 36.6% from three-point range.

Injury concerns also exist for the Badgers, with freshman guard John Blackwell, who averages 6.4 points per game, listed as questionable for upcoming games.

In terms of their overall power ranking, the Badgers are ranked 166, with a ranking of 155 for offense and 83 for defense. Their offensive statistics include shooting 47.03% from the field, 77.14% from the free-throw line, and 34.58% from three-point range. They average 33.83 rebounds, 12.22 offensive assists, and 9.96 turnovers per game. Defensively, Wisconsin allows opponents to shoot 45.14% from the field, 70.18% from the free-throw line, and 35.71% from beyond the arc. They average 29.61 defensive rebounds, 10.78 defensive assists, and 11.43 turnovers per game.

Wisconsin's Strong Previous Performance and Urgent Need for Victory Make Them Favored Against Struggling Ohio State

Both teams are currently not performing at their best, however, considering Wisconsin's previous success in defeating Ohio State on their home court, as well as their urgent need for this victory, I am inclined to support the Badgers. Ohio State, on the other hand, requires more than just a win against Wisconsin to improve their standing. Their recent win against an average Maryland team in a double overtime battle, where key players Thornton and Battle played for over 40 minutes, exemplifies this need. Additionally, Ohio State's shooting percentages on the road are below par, with only 41.4% accuracy from the field and a mere 29.7% from beyond the arc. It is worth noting that Ohio State has only managed to cover the spread three times in their previous 10 games, and have yet to secure a victory on the road, bearing a 0-6 record in away games.
