Game outlook

UConn is on the road playing Florida at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center stadium on Wednesday, 12/7/2022 @ 9:00pm EST. UConn -3.5 was the opening favorite and current line is UConn -4.5.

Taking on the Florida Gators on Wednesday, the #5 UConn Huskies will battle for bragging rights in the Big East-SEC rivalry. With recent wins over Alabama, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State, the Huskies are 9-0. With consecutive wins over Florida A&M and Stetson, the Gators are 6-3. The game total is 143 points, and UConn is a four-point favorite. Exactech Arena will host the game at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.

How effective is UConn or how overrated is it?

After a soft five-game start, Connecticut faced four straight Power-5 opponents and won the PK Invitational. Before entering the Big East conference, the Huskies will play at Florida and at home against Long Island. How talented is this UConn team? There's no doubt we're about to find out. OSU turned the ball over 17 times and committed 25 fouls in its most recent win over the Cowboys. It scored 37.5 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from downtown. With a career-high 26 points, sophomore guard Jordan Hawkins shot 6-of-13 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line for UConn. Also contributing 20 points was junior forward Adama Sanogo, who made 7-of-14 shots.

Despite shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from distance, the Huskies have scored 82.9 points this season. The team's offensive efficiency rating, adjusted for schedule, is ninth highest in the country, according to KenPom. The team's adjusted defensive efficiency ranks tenth. In addition to giving up 58.7 points per game on defense, UConn's opponents shoot just 38.5 percent from the field, including 28.0% from three-point range.

A grueling stretch of games awaits the Gators

With games against fifth-ranked UConn, Ohio, Oklahoma, 11th-ranked Auburn, and Texas A&M on the schedule, Florida has eight games remaining against top-25 teams. After winning consecutive games against easy opponents, the Gators were beaten by West Virginia 84-55. UF shot 34.5% from the field, 2-for-17 (11.8%) from long range, and 13-for-22 (59.1%) from the foul line. The Mountaineers controlled the glass (49-28 rebounding edge) and led by 31 points at one point. Averaging 81.0 points per game, Florida shoots 47.6 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from distance. According to KenPom, its adjusted offensive efficiency rating is 44th and its adjusted defensive efficiency rating is 56th. Additionally, UF has the 23rd-fastest adjusted tempo, averaging 72.4 possessions per 40 minutes (adjusted for opponents).

Colin Castleton leads the Gators in scoring (16.6 PPG, 7.4 RPG, and 2.9 BPG). There are also contributions from sophomore guard Will Richard (13.6 PPG and 4.4 RPG with a 60.7 FG%), junior guard Trey Bonham (10.2 PPG and 3.0 RPG), senior guard Kyle Lofton (9.6 PPG and 4.1 APG), and sophomore guard Kowacie Reeves (9.6 PPG). With a back injury that has kept him out of the past two games, Lofton is questionable for Wednesday's matchup.

Despite winning their fair share of recruiting battles for top players, the Gators haven't shown much promise in the win-loss column. It is now up to Todd Golden, the first-year head coach, to make a difference. In a matchup with a top-five team, Florida has an opportunity to show up and prove itself, but can we expect it to happen?

This year, UF is scoring more than it has in the past few seasons, but its offensive efficiency rating is nearly the same as it was last year. Under Golden, the pace of play has drastically changed. This season, the Gators averaged 72.4 possessions per 40 minutes, up from 65.4 possessions per 40 minutes last season (267th-most). Will they be able to run with the Huskies?

UConn can also score (82.9 PPG) and hold its opponents to 58.7 PPG. According to KenPom, they are the only team in the country with top ten offensive and defensive efficiency ratings.
