Game outlook

Davidson is on the road playing Fordham at the Rose Hill Gym stadium on Wednesday, 12/28/2022 @ 7:00pm EST. Davidson -1 was the opening favorite and current line is Fordham 0.

In the Atlantic-10 opener for both teams, the Davidson Wildcats and Fordham Rams will face off. Davidson comes into this matchup with an overall record of 7-5 and losses in its last two games. With 11 straight wins and a 12-1 record, Fordham is one of the hottest teams in the country. Opening tap is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

It's time for the conference games to begin

With two straight losses, the Wildcats finished their non-conference schedule at 7-5. A chance at a league championship awaits Davidson now that it has turned its attention to conference play. Last Wednesday, the Wildcats lost 73-70 to Northeastern at home before A-10 play began. Northeastern outlasted Davidson with five lead changes and three ties in the second half. Grant Huffman led the way for Davidson with 18 points. Only 40% of Davidson's shots came from the field, while 17% came from 3-point range.

This season, Davidson scored just over 74 points per game while shooting 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range. Their opponents average just over ten free throws per game, while they average sixteen. They struggle on the boards, allowing nearly five more rebounds per game than their opponents. Despite forcing 12.3 turnovers per game, the Wildcats give the ball away 11.8 times per game.

A blazing start to the conference season

To start the year, the Fordham Rams were nearly undefeated in non-conference play. They were one loss away from a flawless start only because of a loss to then #10 Arkansas. Instead, they started 12-1 and won 11 straight games entering league play. In the absence of leading scorer Darius Quisenberry, the Rams beat Virginia Military Institute 80-77 in overtime on Thursday. It was Fordham's most successful start since 1970-71 and its longest win streak since 1990-91. Khalid Moore led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The Rams shot just 35% from the field in the game, contributing to the impressive win.

With Quisenberry back, Fordham's field goal percentage and overall offense should improve. As a team, the Rams score about 76 points per game while holding the opposition to about 67. A 45% field goal percentage and a 36% three-point shooting percentage are their numbers. Fordham is aggressive and averages 17.5 free throw attempts per game, while limiting their opponents to 12. With an average of 37.2 rebounds per game, Fordham has been effective on the glass. In terms of turnovers, Fordham is sloppy, with more than 15 per game.

As of this writing, Fordham has won 11 of its last 12 games at home and is undefeated on the road. Fordham's schedule is ranked last in the country with a 363rd ranking, while Davidson's schedule is ranked 186th. So far, Davidson has won quality games against San Francisco, Charlotte, and Wright State. There is a significant difference in the efficiency of the offense at Davidson. It may be more the result of Fordham's relatively easy schedule that the team has a more efficient defense. It will be critical for Davidson to get to the rim and challenge Fordham's interior defense. The Rams will also lose any advantage they might have on the glass due to Davidson's sloppy shooting, which leads to over 15 turnovers per game. Davidson will play a more efficient game offensively and end its 11-game winning streak.

Davidson Highlights

With a power ranking of 189, Davidson is ranked #152 in offense (scoring an average of 74.17 per game), #263 in defense (allowing an average of 72.08 points to be scored against them per game) and are 7-5 (5-6 ATS) this season.

Fordham Highlights
