Game outlook

Kentucky is on the road playing Missouri at the Mizzou Arena stadium on Wednesday, 12/28/2022 @ 7:00pm EST. Kentucky -2.5 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

The college basketball season begins in earnest as the new year approaches, and we have an SEC matchup in the Show Me State. The #19 Kentucky Wildcats travel to Missouri to face the Tigers on Wednesday night. Despite being a 37-point favorite, Kentucky won 88-68 at home against Florida A&M last Wednesday. As a 6.5-point underdog, Missouri cruised to a 93-71 win over #16 Illinois Thursday in St. Louis. Kentucky leads the all-time series 10-2, including an 83-56 win at home on December 29, 2021.

With a win, the Kentucky Wildcats open SEC play

The Wildcats got back in the win column against Florida A&M in their last home game. On the season, the Wildcats are 8-3 and look forward to a successful start to conference play. In the first five minutes of the game, Kentucky jumped out to an 18-2 lead and never looked back. At halftime, the Wildcats led by 10 points, built a 21-point lead at 11:18, and survived a 14-0 run by the Rattlers to make it a seven-point game at 6:15. The Wildcats regrouped and closed the game on a 19-6 run. The Wildcats shot 52.5% from the field, including 13 of 23 from three-point range, and beat Florida A&M 52%. Cason Wallace led Kentucky with 27 points.

As a team, the Wildcats average 78.7 points per game, ranking 67th in the nation. The Wildcats grab 41 rebounds per game (18th in the nation) and dish out 18.1 assists per game (14th). With an average of 64.4 points allowed per game, the Wildcats rank 75th in the country in scoring defense. The team's leading scorer this season is Oscar Tshiebwe, who averages 15 points and 13 rebounds per game. There are several solid scorers on the team, including Antonio Reeves (12.8 points), Cason Wallace (11.8 points, 4.4 assists), Sahvir Wheeler (8.8 points, 6.3 assists) and Jacob Toppin (10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds). John Calipari's top players include CJ Fredrick, Chris Livingston, Ugonna Onyenso, Lance Ware, and Daimion Collins. On the season, Kentucky shoots 46% from the field. The Missouri Tigers want to keep rolling

During the first six weeks of the season, Missouri has been hot, and their demolition of #16 Illinois kept them rolling. As coach Dennis Gates begins conference play, the Tigers are 11-1. In the first half, Missouri scored 20 points to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 30-14 lead with 6:27 left in the half. In the second half, the Tigers led by as many as 35 en route to a blowout victory. The Tigers shot 59.3% from the floor, including 10 of 20 three-pointers, forced 17 turnovers, and held Illinois to 40.3% shooting. Kobe Brown led the Tigers with 31 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and four steals.

With 88.8 points per game, the Tigers rank 4th in the nation in scoring offense. With 33.3 boards a night, Missouri is 296th in rebounding, while dishing out 20 assists (4th). Despite allowing 74.7 points per game, the Tigers rank 314th in scoring defense. Averaging 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, Kobe Brown is second on the Tigers. Noah Carter (10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds), DeAndre Gholston (10.4 points) and D'Moi Hodge (16.7 points) all average double-digit scoring. There is no doubt that Missouri's Sean East II, Isiaih Mosley, Tre Gomillion, Aidan Shaw, Ronnie DeGray III and Kaleb Brown are all key players. Nationally, the Tigers are shooting 51.3% from the field this season. Averaging ten triples a night, Missouri shoots 36.9% from beyond the arc. 74.1% of the Tigers' free throw attempts have been rewarded this season, which is above average.

Missouri is off to its most impressive start since 2011-12, but they will have to deal with a physical frontcourt in Kentucky. As a team, the Wildcats are competent on defense and will have to contend with an offense that ranks fourth in the country in points per game. While Missouri may be at home, their defense has been a problem, since Kentucky is capable of putting up big offensive numbers. It remains to be seen if the Tigers can handle the heavyweights of the conference. The interior presence of Kentucky and the way they clamp down on opposing teams, as well as their rebounding advantage, give them the edge they need to win this game.

Kentucky Highlights

With a power ranking of 34, Kentucky is ranked #67 in offense (scoring an average of 78.73 per game), #76 in defense (allowing an average of 64.36 points to be scored against them per game) and are 8-3 (4-7 ATS) this season.

Missouri Highlights

Missouri Tigers has a power ranking of 128 and are #4 for offense (scoring an average of 88.75 per game), #313 for defense (giving up an average of 64.36 points per game) and 11-1 (7-5 ATS) overall. Kentucky went 1-2 (1-2 ATS) in their last 3 matchups against Missouri.
