Game outlook

Nebraska is on the road playing Kansas St. at the T-Mobile Center stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 7:00pm EST. Kansas St. -2 was the opening favorite and current line is Kansas St. -3.

A s Nebraska travels to Kansas State on Saturday night, it will attempt to rebound from consecutive losses to ranked opponents. Prior to their losses to Indiana and Purdue, the Cornhuskers had won three straight games. Incarnate Word was blown out 98-50 last Sunday by Kansas State, which had won nine of its first ten games this season.

The Cornhuskers are coming off a strong performance

Despite winning three of its first four games by double digits, Nebraska only covered the spread once. In November, the Cornhuskers lost three games as underdogs. With a three-game winning streak, they defeated Florida State, Boston College, and then-No. Creighton is ranked seventh. At the beginning of December, Nebraska won 63-53 against the Blue Jays as 14.5-point underdogs. Since then, they've lost both games, falling to the then-no. Then-No. 14 Indiana. Purdue is ranked fourth. In last Saturday's overtime loss to the Boilermakers, the Cornhuskers covered the 7.5-point spread.

In a strong defensive effort, they held Purdue center Zach Edey to a season-low 11 points. Derrick Walker leads Nebraska in scoring with 15.3 points per game. Five other Cornhuskers average at least 9.4 points, with four in double figures. While they have been shooting well from 2-point range (53.3), their 3-point shooting percentage (31.0) has been among the poorest in the country. The Huskers will have a height advantage on Saturday night due to their strong offensive rebounding numbers. According to KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency ratings, Kansas State ranks ninth in turnover rate.

Under Tang, Kansas State is off to a winning start

Kansas State leads this series between former Power 12 rivals by six games. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 127-93, but have only played once since Nebraska left for the Big Ten in 2010-11. When these teams met last season, they won 67-58. The Wildcats won 98-50 over Incarnate Word, which was the tenth-largest margin of victory in school history. In the second half, the Wildcats scored 23 unanswered points to put the game out of reach. After losing to Butler in November, they are on a three-game winning streak.

Coach Jerome Tang has only two players back from last year's team. But he landed former Florida star Keyontae Johnson in the offseason, and that move has already paid off. Kansas State's Johnson averages 17.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The only other player in double figures is senior guard Markquis Nowell, who scores 14.1 points and 8.2 assists. Averaging 9.9 points and 5.7 boards, junior forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin has also been a key contributor. Its offensive numbers are decent, but a high turnover rate is its weakness. The Wildcats are facing a Nebraska defense that is No. 67 in adjusted efficiency.

On Saturday night, Nebraska has a matchup advantage. Walker will get easy looks and force Kansas State to collapse defensively throughout the game, since he has too much size for them. After facing three ranked opponents in a row this month, Nebraska is battle-tested coming into Saturday's game. Four of the Cornhuskers' last five games have been covered by the spread. The Wildcats have not faced a ranked team this season, which is one reason why betting markets aren't high.
