Game outlook

UConn is on the road playing Butler at the Hinkle Fieldhouse stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 7:00pm EST. UConn -8.5 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

UConn will look to build on its successful start to the season when it travels to Butler on Saturday night. The Huskies have won all 11 games, including a 114-61 blowout of Long Island last Saturday. The Butler Bulldogs are riding a four-game winning streak after beating California 82-58 last Saturday.

The Huskies are aiming for another double-digit victory

Since Jim Calhoun's team lost to Michigan State in the Final Four in March 2009, UConn has not been ranked this high. To date, Dan Hurley's team has won 11-0, with all 11 wins coming by double digits. Only one ranked team has faced the Huskies, the then-No. The final score was 82-67 in favor of No. Alabama was 18 at the end of November. After beating Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Florida and Long Island last Saturday, they added wins over Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Florida and Long Island. In their next two games, the Huskies will host Georgetown and Villanova in the Big East.

Preseason Big East Player of the Year Adama Sanogo leads the Huskies with 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds despite playing just 24.1 minutes per game. Early in the season, they were able to utilize their bench since almost all of their wins were blowouts. Sanogo's backup, Donovan Clingan, scores 10.5 points and grabs 6.9 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game. The Huskies are shooting 58.4% from 2-point range and have the seventh-best effective field goal percentage in college basketball (57.5). Butler ranks 71st in defensive field goal percentage (468).

Rotation is tight for the Bulldogs

After opening the season with an 8-3 record, Butler can add a marquee win to its resume. In their second game, the Bulldogs lost to Penn State and were blown out by No. At the Battle 4 Atlantis, Tennessee beat No. 22 Tennessee before losing to NC State. Following that loss, they won consecutive games over Kansas State, Tennessee Tech, Yale, and California. A rematch against the Husks is Butler's only remaining game against a ranked opponent.

As three key players have yet to make their season debut, the Bulldogs haven't dug nearly as deep into their bench. In most of their games, they have used just six or seven players, with Manny Bates averaging 13.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks. In October, Akron graduate transfer Ali Ali suffered a concussion and a broken nose during practice, but he has a chance to play on Saturday. With Jayden Taylor averaging 14.9 points per game, every Butler starter averages double figures in scoring. UConn's defense ranks ninth in field goal percentage (41.7), so the Bulldogs will face a challenge. This matchup will be dominated by the Huskies due to their experience and height.

The public will be betting heavily on UConn to cover the spread and remain unbeaten on Saturday night, but this line has held steady for a reason. With the Bulldogs riding the adrenaline of their home fans, Butler's lack of depth won't be an issue in a one-game sample size. Since UConn hasn't played a road game yet this season, this is going to be a tough test. The Bulldogs match up well stylistically and are going to be playing in a rocking Hinkle Fieldhouse.
