Game outlook

San Jose St. is on the road playing Pacific at the Spanos Center stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 7:00pm EST. San Jose St. -1.5 was the opening favorite and current line is Pacific -1.5.

In a non-conference matchup on Saturday, the San Jose State Spartans took on the Pacific Tigers. With two straight victories, the Spartans are 8-3 overall. Pacific Tigers are just 18-15 overall, but have won two out of three games after beating Stanislaus State. Opening tap is scheduled for 7:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

It will be imperative for the Spartans to continue their winning streak

The San Jose Spartans will be looking to win their third straight game on Saturday, as they bring their 8-3 record to Pacific. So far this season, they have won four of five games and are 2-1 on the road. At home last Saturday, the Spartans defeated Santa Clara 75-64. With 24 points and 12 rebounds, Omari Moore led the way, while Sage Tolbert III had 18 points and 12 rebounds, including 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. The Spartans outscored Santa Clara 46-27 in the second half after trailing by eight points at halftime. In the second half, the Spartans made 61% of their shots.

So far, Moore's decision to return to San Jose State has been a success. The NBA prospect has been scouted frequently, and he has the Spartans on track to possibly qualify for the NCAA Tournament. He leads the team in scoring, steals, assists, and rebounding. Despite scoring 70 points per game, the team allows 67. Overall, San Jose State's defense has held teams under 40% from the field this season. Getting out on shooters needs to improve since they have allowed teams to shoot 37% from 3 points. With nearly 39 rebounds per game and a +10.5 rebounding differential, they dominate the glass. As a team, they average 7.5 turnovers per game while committing 12.5 themselves.

It's their turf they're defending

On Saturday, Pacific will look to protect their home court against San Jose State. The Tigers are 2-6 at home and 3-2 on the road this season. On Tuesday, Pacific beat Stanislaus State easily, 80-56. Luke Avdalovic led the Tigers with 23 points. He made 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 7-of-11 from three points. In Pacific's second home win of the season, Sam Freeman and Jordan Ivy-Curry each scored 10 points. Stanislaus State's bench was outscored 37-29 by the Tigers' bench.

In their upcoming game against San Jose State, Pacific hopes to continue their recent success of two wins in three games. Pacific is averaging nearly 77 points per game this season with a +1.5 scoring differential. Pacific's defense has struggled this season, allowing opponents to shoot 47% from the field. 39% of Pacific's 3pt attempts are made from close range, while 36% of the opposition's are made from 3-point range. Pacific is also being out-rebounded thus far this season, with an average rebounding margin of -2.8. They are forcing nearly 14 turnovers per game.

There are a couple of key reasons why the Spartans are the right play here. Offensively and defensively, they are more efficient. In addition, Moore is the most talented player in this game. It is Moore's ability alone that allows him to control the pace of the game. He is a first-round NBA prospect. In this game, San Jose State should dominate the glass and be able to hit a few 3-pointers against Pacific's suspect perimeter defense.
