Game outlook

UCLA is on the road playing Kentucky at the Madison Square Garden stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 5:15pm EST. UCLA -1.5 was the opening favorite and current line is UCLA -2.5.

In Saturda y's CBS Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden, 16th-ranked UCLA will face 13th-ranked Kentucky in a fascinating non-conference matchup. With a 9-2 record coming into this matchup, UCLA is coming off a dominant road win at Maryland. The Wildcats have been off for the past week for school finals, last beating Yale at home a week ago. Opening tap is scheduled for 5:15pm Eastern Standard Time.

Bouncing back for the Bruins

After two lackluster losses to Illinois and Baylor earlier this season, UCLA is now 3-2. The Bruins have won six straight games since then. Last time out, the Bruins blew out the Maryland Terrapins, 87-60, on the road. During the first half, UCLA led by as many as 30 points and finished with a 49-20 advantage. The 27-point win over a ranked opponent was UCLA's largest win over a ranked program since March 2000. Jaylen Clark led the Bruins with 19 points, leading four players in double figures. In the runaway win, David Singleton added 18 points, including 3-0f-4 from long distance, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Adem Bona added 14 points each. In the game, the Bruins defense forced 16 turnovers while committing just four themselves.

The Bruins score 81.8 points per game while allowing just 63. Their overall field goal percentage is 50%, while their three-point shooting percentage is 37%. This season, UCLA is averaging 34 rebounds per game for a +3.2 rebounding differential. The team moves the ball well, averaging 16.5 assists per game and only turning the ball over 9.6 times per game. 17.5 turnovers are forced per game by the Bruins.

The Wildcats are rested and ready to play

The Kentucky Wildcats are coming off a week off as their players were given time off for school finals, and now they are getting ready for March Madness. Before the Wildcats begin their arduous SEC schedule, they will face a red-hot UCLA team. At home against Yale last Saturday, the Wildcats had a tougher matchup than expected, but pulled away late for a 69-59 victory. With 16 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats trailed by two points before they turned to Oscar Tshiebwe, the defending National Player of the Year. Despite Yale's undersized interior defense, Tshiebwe finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

As the Wildcats start the toughest part of their schedule, they are healthy and ready to play. So far, the Wildcats are scoring 80.6 points per game and have a +16.4 point differential. The Wildcats are shooting 47% from the field and holding opponents to 38%. Their 3pt field goal rate is 39% and they hit over eight per game. It is the Wildcats who dominate the glass, grabbing over 41 per game and holding a near-eight rebound advantage per game. With over 18 assists per game, the Wildcats move the ball well. Despite forcing 12 turnovers per game, Kentucky locks them up nearly 14 times.

UCLA has won six straight games and played the 76th toughest schedule in the nation. As of this writing, they have faced four Top-25 teams this year. Over 50% of their shots are made outside the paint, making them the third most efficient offense in the country. Kentucky has played the 165th hardest schedule so far and has been off for a week. Furthermore, UCLA has the 18th most efficient defense and forces nearly 18 turnovers per game. In order to avoid the Wildcats taking advantage of the Bruins' ability to cause turnovers, the Bruins must cause turnovers themselves. In the passing lanes, the Bruins have an experienced backcourt and an active defense.
