Game outlook

UMass is on the road playing North Texas at the MassMutual Center stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 3:00pm EST. North Texas -4 was the opening favorite and current line is North Texas -3.

A mid-major rivalry will be played on a neutral floor between the Atlantic 10 and Conference USA in the birthplace of basketball. On Saturday afternoon, the UMass Minutemen face the North Texas Mean Green on the road. On Sunday, UMass defeated Hofstra 71-56 at the Barclays Center on a neutral floor, covering the two-point line. In their previous game last Saturday at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, North Texas edged Grand Canyon 60-58, but failed to cover the 3.5-point line. The Mean Green have won both meetings between the two teams, most recently 66-57 on home ground on December 11, 2021.

Minutemen look to dominate in their home state

Following a loss to UMass Lowell, UMass took down Hofstra at the Barclays Center. In this game, the Minutemen hope to maintain their early season momentum. UMass trailed by one with 14:04 to play before exploding on a 22-2 run that gave them complete control and a 62-43 lead with 5:28 left. As a result, they won the match. To offset a six of 14 showing at the charity stripe, UMass shot 45.5% from the field, including five of 14 from three-point range. Tafara Garapeled the Minutemen with 13 points.

With an average of 72.8 points per game, the Minutemen rank 173rd in the nation in scoring offense. UMass collects 37.9 boards per game while dishing out 15 assists per game. By allowing 66.9 points per game, the Minutemen rank 128th in scoring defense. On the year, Noah Fernandes averaged 11.4 points and 3.4 assists per game for the Minutemen. Cross (10.9 points, 5.4 rebounds) and Weeks (9.5 points, 4.5 boards) are capable secondary scorers. Coach Frank Martin has quality depth with RJ Luis, Dyondre Dominguez, Isaac Kante, Keon Thompson, Wilden Leveque, Tafara Garape, Rahsool Diggins and Brandon Martin.

The North Texas Mean Greens try to maintain momentum

In their previous match at the Footprint Center, North Texas defeated Grand Canyon for the third straight time. With an 8-2 record on the season, the Mean Green hope to maintain their momentum in this game. After leading 9-1 just over five minutes into the game, North Texas trailed Grand Canyon by one at halftime. After leading by six in the second half, the Mean Green trailed 55-52 with 3:49 remaining. In regulation, both teams were scoreless for the final 1:21 as North Texas reeled off eight straight points to go up 60-55. North Texas shot 38.2% from the field, including three of 14 from beyond the arc, while holding Grand Canyon to 35.6% shooting. Tyler Perry led North Texas with 17 points.

The Mean Green averaged 60.6 points per game on the season, which is 355th in the country. North Texas averages 36.2 boards and 10.4 assists per game. The Mean Green are stifling on defense, allowing 52.4 points per game. Tylor Perry leads North Texas with 17 points and 1.5 steals per game. Abou Ousmane (11.5 points, 6.2 rebounds) and Kai Huntsberry (12.5 points) are capable scoring options. To succeed, Aaron Scott, Jayden Martinez, Rubin Jones, Tyree Eady, Christian Moore, Matthew Stone, and Moulaye Sissoko must all contribute. This season, North Texas is shooting a pathetic 39% from the field.

Despite being a middle of the road offensive unit, UMass is leaps and bounds ahead of the Mean Green when it comes to scoring points. Defense has been North Texas' bread and butter for the past few years. The Mean Green stifle opposing teams and make things miserable for them. In five of their 10 games this season, North Texas has kept their opponents under 50 points. They have yet to allow more than 63 points in a game. Especially without Fernandes as an offensive option, UMass will face a challenge. This contest will be won by North Texas and their defense.

UMass Highlights

With a power ranking of 45, UMass is ranked #355 in offense (scoring an average of 60.60 per game), #4 in defense (allowing an average of 52.40 points to be scored against them per game) and are 8-2 (4-4 ATS) this season.
