Game outlook

Missouri is on the road playing UCF at the FLA Live Arena stadium on Saturday, 12/17/2022 @ 12:00pm EST. UCF -0.5 was the opening favorite and current line is UCF -3.

This Saturday, the Missouri Tigers, out of the SEC, will take on Central Florida, out of the AAC, in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic. After losing to #6 Kansas last Saturday, the Tigers are 9-1 this season. With three straight wins and four of their last five games, UCF is 8-2 on the season. Opening tap is scheduled for 12:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

A tame tiger

The Missouri Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 start to the season with only one nail-biter. A visit from Kansas knocked the Tigers back. A week before taking a week off for school finals, the Tigers hosted #6 Kansas and lost 95-67. In front of a sold-out home crowd, four Tigers scored in double figures. With 15 points each, D'Moi Hodge and Nick Honor led the way. At one point, Kansas hit 11 straight field goals and led 50-33 at halftime. In the game, the Tigers shot just 40% from the field, their lowest mark of the season, while Kansas shot 57%. In addition, the Tigers turned the ball over 21 times against the defending national champions.

With an average of 90.4 points per game, the Tigers are second in the nation in scoring. Despite losing by nearly 30 points to Kansas, they own a +14.5 point differential on the season. The Tigers are shooting 51% on the season overall and are hitting 35% from 3-point range. As a result, the Tigers allow the opposition to shoot 37% from 3pt range and give up nine 3pt field goals per game. The Tigers' defense allows 15 made free throws per game. In addition, they are being outrebounded 363 to 346 on the season for a rebounding differential of -1.7. Turnovers are their main defensive advantage. Over 20 turnovers are forced per game, which is third in the country.

For the Knights, it's been a hot start

After losing their season opener, Central Florida has won eight of their last nine games. As of this matchup with Missouri, they have won three straight games. In addition to Florida State, Santa Clara, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss, the Knights also defeated Florida State, Santa Clara, and Oklahoma State. With 21 points in the first 21 minutes, UCF quieted the Ole Miss home crowd en route to a 72-61 victory. J.C. Kelly led UCF with 20 points and nine rebounds, just missing a double-double. A 15-point performance from Taylor Hendricks helped the Knights beat a power-five conference team on the road. As a team, the Knights outrebounded Ole Miss 39-32 and forced 15 turnovers while committing just 11.

Compared to Missouri, UCF is much more defensively oriented. Despite scoring 71.7 points per game, they allow just 60.4 points per game, which places them 20th in the country. Against UCF, the opposition shot 38% from the field and 27% from three points. In those categories, they rank 20th and 16th, respectively. Averaging 38 rebounds per game, the Knights have a +4.6 rebounding edge. While Central Florida turns the ball over nearly 15 times per game, it forces nearly 16 turnovers.

The two teams are equally matched, but have reached this point in very different ways. So far, Missouri's offense had top-five numbers until Kansas humbled them. A stellar defense has allowed UCF to keep the opposition's shooting percentage below 40%. As a unit, they rank 32nd in terms of defensive efficiency, while the Tigers rank 18th in terms of offensive efficiency. It will be critical for the Tigers to cause turnovers in this game. Over 20 turnovers are forced per game while over 15 turnovers are caused by the Knights. By creating turnovers, Missouri can score easy baskets and play at the fifth-fastest pace in the nation.

Missouri Highlights

With a power ranking of 34, Missouri is ranked #3 in offense (scoring an average of 90.40 per game), #330 in defense (allowing an average of 75.90 points to be scored against them per game) and are 9-1 (5-5 ATS) this season.
