Game outlook

Texas-San Antonio is on the road playing New Mexico at the The Pit stadium on Saturday, 12/10/2022 @ 4:00pm EST. New Mexico -21 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

On S aturday, the (8-0) New Mexico Lobos will take on the (5-3) Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners at The Pit. Mountain West vs. Conference USA kicks off at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. In its last game on Nov. 28, UTSA defeated Incarnate Word 68-62. On Dec. 6, New Mexico defeated Western New Mexico 102-63. This season, the Lobos are 6-0 at home and the Roadrunners are 0-1 on the road.

In New Mexico, can UTSA prove its mettle?

UTSA returns eight players from last year's team, including seven starters. Jacob Germany, a 6-foot-11 senior forward, led the Roadrunners in scoring and rebounding last season with 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds. Last season, UTSA finished 10-22, with a 1-11 record away from home. With consecutive games against New Mexico and Utah, Texas-San Antonio will have the chance to prove it is an improved team in 2022-23.

The Roadrunners shot 25-for-57 from the field (43.9%) and 10-for-28 from distance (35.7%) in their most recent win over Incarnate Word. Germany led UTSA with 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Junior guard John Buggs scored 14 points, including four three-pointers, and senior guard Japhet Medor scored 11 points. In comparison, their opponents shot just 37.5 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from long range.

Texas-San Antonio scored 67.3 points on 41.2 percent shooting. The team's opponents scored 65.9 points on 39.3 percent shooting, including 28.0% from distance. The Roadrunners have a turnover-to-assist ratio of 0.77, 303rd in the country. KenPom ranks their offensive efficiency at 329th, and their defensive efficiency at 290th.

Is New Mexico any good despite its undefeated record?

Despite being one of ten undefeated teams left, the Lobos are ranked 82nd in the KenPom rankings with a strength of schedule that is 271st. On Jan. 14, New Mexico will play San Diego State, and it won't play another ranked opponent until late February when it plays the Aztecs again. While the Mountain West isn't filled with premier programs, UNM's soft non-conference schedule isn't helping its profile either.

The Lobos tallied 102 points against Western New Mexico, shooting 38-for-70 (54.3%) from the field and 21-for-28 from the free-throw line. The Mustangs scored 63 points on 21-of-66 shooting from the floor and 14-of-28 from the foul line. The UNM team assisted on 25 of its 38 made field goals, outrebounded WNM 52-35, and had a 25-9 assist-to-turnover ratio. A trio of Lobos scored in double digits off the bench, led by Wichita State transfer Morris Udeze (18 points) and junior guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. (17 points).

Coached by Richard Pitino, the Lobos scored 84.6 points on 49.2 percent shooting from the floor and 33.1 percent from three-point range. KenPom ranks them 49th in offensive efficiency. The UNM defense allows 67.0 points on 40.8 percent shooting, including 34.0 percent from distance. Nationally, it ranks 124th in defensive efficiency. Assist-to-turnover ratio for the Lobos is 1.41, 29th in the NCAA.

UTSA is a winning team, but KenPom ranks it 323rd in the nation with an adjusted efficiency margin of -12.96. That doesn't bode well for the Roadrunners against a New Mexico team that has a top-15 scoring offense (84.6 points per game). New Mexico is well-coached and has talented players with Power Five experience in Mashburn Jr., who played under Pitino at Minnesota, and Jaelen House (15.9 PPG and 4.9 APG), who started his collegiate career at Arizona State. In terms of assist-tof the assist-to-turnover ranks 29th out of 30 teams.
