Game outlook

Penn St. is on the road playing Illinois at the State Farm Center stadium on Saturday, 12/10/2022 @ 12:00pm EST. Illinois -9.5 was the opening favorite and current line is Illinois -10.25.

When Penn State travels to No. 17 Illinois on Saturday afternoon, it will be looking to snap its two-game losing streak. After winning six of their first seven games, the Nittany Lions lost consecutive games to Clemson and Michigan State. On Tuesday, Illinois beat No. 2 Texas in overtime after losing to Maryland.

A versatile Pickett leads the Nittany Lions

This season, Penn State won its first four games, including victories over Butler and Furman. After losing to Virginia Tech 61-59, the Nittany Lions bounced back with wins over Colorado State and Lafayette. In the two games since then, they have lost to Clemson in double overtime and Michigan State by nine points. Jalen Pickett led the Spartans with 13 points, 17 rebounds, and eight assists.

Pickett leads Penn State in scoring (15.8), rebounding (7.8), assists (7.7) and steals (1.4), making him a well-rounded player. His teammates have struggled recently, including forward Kebba Njie, who has scored two points on 1 of 7 shooting in his last two games. Against Michigan State, Penn State missed 19 of its 27 3-point attempts. Out of 363 Division I teams, the Nittany Lions ranked No. 31 for field goal percentage (55.6) and No. 10 The only weakness on offense is their rebounding, which they miss 39.3% of the time. The Illinois defense is ranked No. 12 in adjusted efficiency when playing them.

Texas loses to Illinois thanks to Shannon Jr.

This season, Illinois won its first four games, including a statement win against then-No. UCLA is ranked eighth. In their next game, the Fighting Illini lost to No. 16 Virginia won 70-61 before defeating Lindenwood and Yale. In their second road game, they lost to then-No. 22 Maryland last Friday before responding with an overtime win over No. 2 Texas on Tuesday. Despite trailing Texas by double digits with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation, Illinois forced overtime.

Jayden Epps sank a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left and then converted two free throws with eight seconds left to tie the game. Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 12 of his 16 points in overtime, while Matthew Mayer scored 21 points. Shannon, who previously played for Texas Tech, leads the team in scoring (19.3), rebounding (6.2), and 3-pointers made (22). Despite some turnover issues, Illinois shoots 57.5% from 2-point range and ranks 32 in offensive rebounding. Penn State's adjusted efficiency ranks 56th against the Fighting Illini.

Last year, Pickett had game-highs in points and assists for Penn State against Illinois, but the Illini still won by five points. With Shannon and Mayer joining the Fighting Illini from the transfer portal, I expect the margin to be at least twice that size this time around. Illinois has played outstanding defense and shot the ball well so far as a result of those moves. Also, they have way more size than Penn State, which struggles to pull down rebounds. Six of Illinois' last eight games have been covered, including seven wins at home.
