Mercyhurst Lakers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Prediction, Odds and Best Bet

Game time: November 5, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET

Venue: Purcell Pavilion — South Bend, IN

Article updated Nov 5, 7:53 AM EST

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Notre Dame is our projected winner over Mercyhurst, 75-58, with Braeden Smith’s controlled opening performance and the Lakers’ scoring struggles supplying the strongest matchup reasons. The Irish have the more persuasive early results, but covering 19.5 points requires a bigger judgment than picking the winner. Neither the supplied spread nor the 141.5 total offers a strong enough edge for an actionable wager.

Mercyhurst Lakers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish prediction and best bet

Notre Dame should win this matchup, but the official betting recommendation is Pass. Mercyhurst’s 78-43 loss at Marquette makes its offense the immediate concern. Notre Dame enters after beating Villanova, with Smith delivering an encouraging combination of scoring and ball security.

Those results favor the Irish without settling the margin. Mercyhurst has played only one game, and Notre Dame’s return from Rome adds uncertainty to its preparation. Our forecast calls for a comfortable home victory, with low confidence in the precise margin. That distinction matters at Notre Dame -19.5 (-110), where winning convincingly can still leave favorite backers short.

Mercyhurst Lakers outlook

Jake Lemelman gives Mercyhurst a credible scoring foundation. The South Bend Tribune identifies him as the only returning starter from the 2025-26 team. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.9 points, shot 39.6% from three and made 86.4% of his free throws. He then scored 16 points in 32 minutes at Marquette.

The concern is how much help he receives. Lemelman’s production was not enough to keep the opener competitive, and the Lakers need a broader offensive contribution to threaten Notre Dame. His shooting history offers a reason to expect more resistance than Mercyhurst showed in that loss.

ABC7 reports that Mercyhurst finished last season 17-17 overall and 5-14 on the road, averaging 7.2 steals, 3.8 blocks and 8.7 turnovers per game. Those are historical reference points. With only one returning starter, they should not be treated as a settled description of this roster.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish outlook

Smith’s performance against Villanova is Notre Dame’s clearest individual positive. According to the South Bend Tribune, he finished the November 1 victory with 16 points, three steals and one turnover in 31 minutes. Repeating that level of ball security would help the Irish turn their favorite status into control of the game.

Preparation is less straightforward. The Tribune reports that Notre Dame returned from Rome on Monday night and had two full days to address jet lag, practice and prepare. That travel warrants some caution, although it is not evidence that the Irish will play poorly.

Last season’s defense also argues against assuming a shutdown. ABC7 lists Notre Dame at 13-18 overall and 10-7 at home, allowing 75.3 points per game and 43.9% opponent shooting. Those figures temper the forecast without determining how this season’s team will defend.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Mercyhurst can sustain enough offense around Lemelman to make Notre Dame work throughout the game. Smith’s opener suggests a route to steady possessions for the Irish, but one strong individual performance is not proof of a lasting turnover advantage.

The betting opinions are sharply divided. In the November 5, 12:49 UTC consensus update, external spread selections favor Notre Dame at 74%, while SportsJaw members and qualified handicappers each favor Mercyhurst at 75%. The blended leader is Notre Dame at 64%.

That blend weights external selections at 80% and SportsJaw participation at 20%. It describes selection preference, not Notre Dame’s probability of covering. The disagreement is meaningful caution against turning the favorite’s popularity into a claimed betting edge.

Mercyhurst Lakers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Notre Dame -19.5 (-110) and Mercyhurst +19.5 (-110). Our projected 17-point margin falls on Mercyhurst’s side of the spread, but the forecast is too fragile to justify a wager.

Mercyhurst’s opener illustrates the risk of backing the underdog, while Lemelman’s shooting and Notre Dame’s travel complicate a favorite cover. A small change in either team’s offensive performance would move this projection across 19.5. Neither side has enough separation from the supplied line to become the official pick.

Mercyhurst Lakers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 141.5 (-110) and Under 141.5 (-110). The projected 133 points lean below the line, principally because Mercyhurst’s offense remains a concern. Notre Dame’s prior-season defensive numbers are the strongest statistical counterweight.

Total preferences also conflict: external consensus favors Over at 80%, producing a 71% blended Over leader, while SportsJaw members and qualified handicappers each favor Under at 67%. These preferences offer no reliable measure of scoring pace. With limited current-season offensive evidence, the projected Under remains an editorial lean rather than a wager.

Mercyhurst Lakers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Projected Score & Betting Picks

Game forecast: Notre Dame 75, Mercyhurst 58. Smith’s opening performance and Mercyhurst’s scoring difficulties favor the Irish. Lemelman’s established shooting is the clearest counterargument to another lopsided Lakers defeat.

Confidence is low because the margin and scoring expectations rest heavily on opening performances. Notre Dame is the winner selection; both market recommendations remain passes. Official SportsJaw wager: Pass.
