Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Purdue Boilermakers Betting Picks & Predictions

Venue: T-Mobile Arena — Las Vegas, NV

Article updated Nov 2, 10:10 AM EST

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Gonzaga will beat Purdue, 78-73, with Braden Huff’s established scoring giving the Bulldogs the edge in this neutral-site opener. His production last season and against Arkansas in exhibition play anchors the forecast, while Purdue’s size and greater system familiarity argue for a close game. Neither Gonzaga -5.5 nor the 153.5 total offers a strong enough edge for an actionable wager.

Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Purdue Boilermakers prediction and best bet

Gonzaga gets the pick because Huff supplies a credible scoring foundation while both teams reshape their rotations. He averaged 17.8 points in 18 games last season and contributed 19 points with 11 rebounds against Arkansas in an exhibition. Those performances give the Bulldogs a concrete starting point for the offensive matchup.

Purdue has answers, particularly Daniel Jacobsen’s size and a younger core with more experience in Matt Painter’s system. C.J. Cox’s increased exhibition scoring also makes the Boilermakers a credible threat. The forecast is Gonzaga 78, Purdue 73, with low confidence. Best bet: Pass. Picking Gonzaga to win is easier than backing either side of a 5.5-point spread.

Expected starters: Gonzaga lists Xaivian Lee, Isiah Harwell, Davis Fogle, Braden Huff and Massamba Diop. Purdue lists C.J. Cox, Caden Pierce, Omer Mayer, Gicarri Harris and Daniel Jacobsen.

Gonzaga Bulldogs outlook

Huff’s scoring is the main reason to favor Gonzaga. A dislocated kneecap ended his previous season after 18 games, during which he averaged 17.8 points. His 19 points and 11 rebounds against Arkansas offer encouragement entering this opener. That exhibition performance supports expecting a meaningful contribution, although it cannot tell us how he will fare against Purdue’s particular frontcourt.

Fogle offers another scoring possibility. He averaged 8.6 points off the bench last season, then scored 30 points in 20 minutes at Gonzaga’s public preseason scrimmage, making 6 of 7 threes. The scrimmage suggests shooting upside, but carrying that accuracy into a competitive opener is a much bigger ask. Gonzaga’s transition-minded guards give the offense another route to points if they can attack before Purdue gets organized.

The challenge is fitting those pieces together. Gonzaga brought in 11 newcomers and returned four players, with its bench rotation still subject to change. Chauncey Wiggins was reported ineligible, with a court decision expected November 2 that could affect his status. Lee and Javon Bennett were playing under temporary restraining orders. The forecast makes no assumption that Wiggins becomes available.

Purdue Boilermakers outlook

Purdue must replace four senior starters, including two All-Americans. Cox is its lone returning starter and top returning scorer after averaging 8.5 points last season. He averaged 15.3 points across the exhibitions and scored 18 against UConn. That is an encouraging response to a larger offensive responsibility, though exhibition production remains an early indication.

The supporting group has several ways to contribute. Six Purdue players averaged at least seven points in exhibitions, while Pierce is expected to play at a small-ball four spot. Jacobsen, listed at 7-foot-4, brings substantial size against Huff and the 7-foot-1 Diop. His height makes the interior matchup worth watching, without guaranteeing that Purdue will control it.

Results across the three domestic exhibitions varied sharply. Purdue beat Purdue Fort Wayne 92-62 and Ball State 87-55, but lost 76-53 at UConn, where its bench reportedly struggled. Purdue shot 32.7% on 98 three-point attempts across those games, including a 2-for-25 performance at Connecticut. The younger core’s familiarity with Painter’s system helps the case for a competitive opener. Better perimeter shooting would strengthen that case considerably; another poor night would leave Cox and the interior group with more to carry.

Key matchup factors

The most consequential contrast is how the teams want to generate offense. Gonzaga’s guards look to push in transition, while Purdue’s approach emphasizes execution over speed. If the Bulldogs create early opportunities, they can reduce the number of possessions spent attacking an organized defense. If Purdue controls the rhythm, its system familiarity becomes more useful.

Perimeter shooting is the other swing factor. Purdue’s 98 attempts across three domestic exhibitions show a willingness to shoot from outside, but the UConn result accounts for a particularly poor portion of that sample. Gonzaga should prepare for more than a repeat of that performance. A Purdue shooting recovery is the strongest threat to the forecast.

Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Purdue Boilermakers spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Gonzaga -5.5 (-110) and Purdue +5.5 (-110). The projected five-point Gonzaga victory falls on Purdue’s side of the line, but a half-point difference between forecast and spread is too fragile to make the Boilermakers an official play.

Huff’s scoring supports Gonzaga’s win projection, while Purdue’s size and Cox’s exhibition production favor a competitive finish. Either late free throws or a few perimeter makes could change the covering team. With both rotations undergoing substantial change, there is no convincing cushion at either supplied spread.

Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Purdue Boilermakers total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 153.5 (-108) and Under 153.5 (-104). Gonzaga 78, Purdue 73 produces 151 points, putting the forecast slightly below the line. That small difference is insufficient for an Under wager given the uncertainty around shooting and tempo.

Purdue’s execution-first approach could help limit transition possessions, and its exhibition shooting gives reason for caution about its scoring. Conversely, Gonzaga wants to run, and better Purdue three-point accuracy could lift the total. Neither direction has enough supporting evidence to justify the supplied price.

Gonzaga Bulldogs vs Purdue Boilermakers Projected Score & Betting Picks

Game forecast: Gonzaga 78, Purdue 73. Huff’s prior-season production and Arkansas exhibition performance give Gonzaga the narrow edge, with Fogle offering another potential scoring outlet. The projection assumes the Bulldogs find enough offense to overcome the challenges of integrating a heavily changed roster.

The strongest counterargument is Purdue’s combination of system familiarity, interior size and room to improve its perimeter shooting. Those factors could turn a close Gonzaga win into a Purdue victory. Confidence is low because the edge depends on how new rotations perform in their opener. The spread and total remain separate passes, and the single official SportsJaw wager is Pass.
