A win over Vanderbilt rounds out the Golden Eagles' 10-3 non-conference record. Three of USM's first four games were won in Sun Belt Conference competition. Preseason polls predicted Southern Miss would finish 13th in the conference. Their latest win came in a tight contest against UL Monroe. Despite being outshot from the field (36.7%) and from three (33.3%), USM shot 12-for-13 from the free-throw line (92.3%). Despite being outrebounded 39-33, the Warhawks gave up 17 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over too many times. With 24 points and 11 rebounds, senior forward DeAndre Pickney led Southern Mississippi.
In the NCAA Tournament, Marshall could make a big impact
11 of 13 non-conference games were won by the Thundering Herd. Despite this, Marshall is just 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference play after losing two of its last three games. As predicted by the conference's preseason poll, MU will finish sixth. Against Coastal last week, the Herd won by 15 points, a much-needed win. At halftime, Marshall led by seven and never trailed by more than three points. MU outrebounded CCU 53-38 with 20 offensive rebounds.
