Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres Predictions Today: Michael Soroka vs Randy Vasquez

Game time: September 27, 2026 at 3:10 PM ET

Venue: Petco Park — San Diego, California

Article updated Sep 27, 8:41 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The Arizona Diamondbacks will beat the San Diego Padres, Arizona 4, San Diego 3, in our September 27 forecast. Michael Soroka's stronger season ERA, WHIP and strikeout production give Arizona a slight starting-pitching advantage. Randy Vásquez's recent improvement and San Diego's home record make this a low-confidence prediction, with no actionable wager at the supplied run-line or total prices.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres prediction and best bet

Arizona gets the narrow forecast edge because Soroka brings the stronger season baseline and the Diamondbacks average slightly more runs per game. His advantage in strikeouts is particularly useful here: he has recorded more than Vásquez despite pitching fewer innings. That gives Arizona a credible route to controlling the early portion of the game.

Best bet: Pass. San Diego counters with better recent starter results, a stronger home record and a lower bullpen ERA. Those strengths make Arizona -1.5 (+136) a difficult sell. They also complicate the total: the starters offer reasons to expect restraint, but Saturday's scoring and short outings add uncertainty about the relief innings.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: Arizona at San Diego, MLB, September 27, 2026, at 3:10 p.m. EDT.

Venue: Petco Park. Broadcasts: Padres.TV and DBACKS.TV, according to MLB.

Records: Arizona 86-75, including 41-39 away; San Diego 90-71, including 50-30 at home.

Probable starters: Right-handers Michael Soroka for Arizona and Randy Vásquez for San Diego.

SportsJaw moneylines: Arizona -128; San Diego +107.

SportsJaw run lines: Arizona -1.5 (+136); San Diego +1.5 (-164). Total: Over 7.5 (-125); Under 7.5 (+105).

Arizona Diamondbacks outlook

Soroka is the main reason to favor Arizona. MLB's current 2026 line has him at 9-5 with a 3.31 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 110 strikeouts across 111 1/3 innings, spanning 21 appearances and 20 starts. Those figures give him a clear season advantage over Vásquez in ERA, WHIP and strikeout volume. The official MLB figures take precedence over the differing season totals on Covers.

The recent picture is more complicated. Covers credits Soroka with 15 1/3 innings over his last three starts, allowing 10 hits, nine runs, eight earned runs, two homers and five walks while striking out 18. His 0.98 WHIP looks encouraging, but the accompanying 4.70 ERA shows that limiting baserunners has not consistently kept runs off the board.

On September 22 at Colorado, Soroka pitched seven innings in Arizona's 7-2 victory. On September 15 against Miami, he worked five innings in a 4-2 loss. Arizona averages 4.57 runs scored and 4.48 allowed per game. Its relievers have a 4.00 ERA, and Taylor Clarke recorded only two outs in Saturday's 10-7 defeat. Another lengthy Soroka outing would reduce the innings Arizona needs from that relief group.

San Diego Padres outlook

San Diego has substantial evidence in its favor despite the forecast. The Padres are 50-30 at home and have a 3.50 bullpen ERA, compared with Arizona's 4.00. They allow 4.20 runs per game, fewer than the Diamondbacks, while scoring 4.43. That combination makes them a credible winner even if Soroka holds the better individual season profile.

MLB lists Vásquez at 10-6 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 85 strikeouts over 134 2/3 innings in 31 appearances, including 22 starts. Covers adds 138 hits, 64 runs, 60 earned runs, 16 home runs and 36 walks to his season breakdown. His greater workload has come with fewer strikeouts than Soroka's, making the recent results an important counterweight.

Across his last three starts, Vásquez allowed eight hits, four runs, all earned, and three walks in 16 2/3 innings. He struck out eight, surrendered no homers and posted a 2.16 ERA with a 0.66 WHIP. MLB's last-seven-appearances split also shows improvement, with a 2.66 ERA over 23 2/3 innings, though that includes relief work. Saturday's starter, Walker Buehler, lasted 3 2/3 innings, so efficient work from Vásquez would help limit another early call to the bullpen.

Key matchup factors

The central tension is season strength against recent form. Soroka has the stronger overall numbers, while Vásquez has been better at preventing runs across the three-start comparison. Saturday's short starts also make bullpen ERA an incomplete guide to the relief matchup; specific reliever availability is unconfirmed.

At the September 27 update, SportsJaw's combined moneyline consensus favored Arizona 492 to 108, or 82%. Those counts include a modeled sportsbook sample blended with SportsJaw participation; they are not observed sportsbook ticket totals or Arizona's win probability. San Diego led the run-line consensus at 67%, while the total was evenly divided. The side preferences fit a close Arizona win, but popularity adds no independent pitching advantage.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Arizona -1.5 (+136) and San Diego +1.5 (-164). The Diamondbacks are the projected winner, but the one-run forecast leaves them short of covering their run line. Vásquez's recent performance and San Diego's relief ERA strengthen the case for a competitive game.

San Diego +1.5 (-164) fits the forecast, but that fit alone is insufficient reason to pay the price. The Padres would cover a one-run defeat; a larger Arizona margin would lose the wager. The evidence favors caution about the margin more than conviction in either spread.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 7.5 (-125) and Under 7.5 (+105). The seven-run projection sits below the line, and Soroka's season performance alongside Vásquez's recent starts gives the Under a reasonable scoring argument.

The opposing evidence matters. Soroka's last-three-start ERA is 4.70, the teams combined for 17 runs Saturday, and both starters in that game exited before completing four innings. One high-scoring game should not dictate Sunday's expectation, but the uncertain relief picture weakens an Under wager. The plus-money return is appealing without making the edge persuasive.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres projected score

Game forecast: Arizona Diamondbacks 4, San Diego Padres 3. Soroka's stronger season run prevention and strikeout production supply the deciding edge, with Arizona's slightly higher scoring average offering secondary support. Expecting a narrow victory is more reasonable than projecting clear separation.

The strongest counterargument is San Diego's combination of excellent recent results from Vásquez, a 50-30 home record and the lower bullpen ERA. That could readily overturn the forecast, so confidence is low. Arizona remains the winner selection, while both run lines and the 7.5 total are passes. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass: a likely result and an attractive wager require different levels of conviction.
