New York Yankees vs Arizona Diamondbacks Predictions: Gerrit Cole vs Eduardo Rodriguez

Game time: September 18, 2026 at 9:40 PM ET

Article updated Sep 18, 12:46 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Eduardo Rodriguez’s pitching numbers favor Arizona, while the Yankees’ stronger team results and unresolved lineup questions leave the betting case incomplete.

The matchup and pitching case

The New York Yankees visit the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on September 18, 2026, in this MLB matchup. MLB.com lists Gerrit Cole and Eduardo Rodriguez as the probable starters. SportsJaw prices New York at -130 and Arizona at +110 on the moneyline.

Rodriguez offers Arizona its clearest argument. He carries a 2.62 ERA and 135 strikeouts, compared with Cole’s 3.67 ERA and 117 strikeouts. Covers lists Rodriguez with a 2.17 ERA over his last five starts, versus 5.02 for Cole.

Their latest outings add caution to that comparison. Cole surrendered nine hits, five earned runs and three home runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Mets on September 12. Rodriguez allowed eight hits and six runs against Texas on September 13, although only three were earned, across 5 1/3 innings. His seven strikeouts and one walk were positives, but the unearned runs still contributed to the scoring.

New York supplies meaningful counterevidence

The Yankees are 88-64, compared with Arizona’s 80-73. New York has scored 4.59 runs per game and allowed 3.69; Arizona has scored and allowed 4.43. Those season results temper the appeal of backing Arizona solely on the starting pitchers.

New York’s lineup also requires care. Aaron Judge is listed day-to-day with lower-right-leg tightness, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham are on the injured list. Judge’s designation does not establish that he will miss this game.

Betting decision

Arizona’s +110 moneyline deserves consideration, but the pitching comparison alone does not establish value against New York’s stronger team results. Confirmed lineups, relevant handedness splits and bullpen availability are unavailable here.

The total is 8.5, with over +105 and under -125. Rodriguez’s recent ERA supports a lower-scoring possibility, while both starters’ latest outings provide reasons for caution. Neither direction has a sufficiently complete case. Pass, with no winner or score projection.
