Atlanta Braves vs Houston Astros Predictions: Tyler Mahle vs Peter Lambert

Game time: September 18, 2026 at 8:10 PM ET

Article updated Sep 18, 6:42 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Atlanta has the stronger season bullpen results, but Lambert’s season numbers and Houston’s power keep this a low-confidence pick.

The starting matchup

The Atlanta Braves visit the Houston Astros on September 18, 2026, at 8:10 p.m. ET. Both Covers and the Associated Press identify Tyler Mahle and Peter Lambert as the starters for this MLB matchup, the clubs’ first meeting of the 2026 season.

Mahle’s September 12 outing provides a concrete reason to favor Atlanta: seven innings against Philadelphia, six hits, one earned run, no walks and three strikeouts. Lambert also delivered a useful start that day, allowing six hits and three earned runs across six innings against Tampa Bay, with no walks and four strikeouts.

The season comparison favors Lambert. The AP lists his ERA at 3.71 and WHIP at 1.22, compared with Mahle’s 3.91 and 1.25. Mahle’s better September 12 result supports the Atlanta case, but one outing does not establish a decisive starting-pitching advantage.

Relief pitching supplies the edge

Atlanta’s relievers have a 3.41 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, versus Houston’s 4.07 and 1.26, according to Covers. Those season results are the strongest reason to lean toward the Braves, although they do not establish which relievers will be available tonight.

Houston supplies meaningful counterevidence with 206 home runs, including 40 from Yordan Alvarez. Neither club arrives with strong recent results: both are 4-6 over their last 10 games. Atlanta’s 38-37 road record also offers little reason to treat the visitor as a commanding favorite.

Price and prediction

SportsJaw lists Atlanta at -120 and Houston at +100. The selection is Atlanta Braves moneyline (-120), with low confidence and a projected 4-3 Braves win. The bullpen comparison supports a slight preference, while Lambert’s season performance limits conviction.

The total is 8.5, with over +100 and under -120. The projection falls below that number, but Houston’s power and the lack of confirmed bullpen availability leave too much uncertainty to recommend the under.
