Army vs UMass Predictions
Army is on the road playing UMass at the Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium stadium on Saturday, 11/26/2022 @ 12:00pm EST. Army -20 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.
Army Black Knights (4-6) will face the UMass Minutemen (1-10) at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, MA. The Minutemen have lost eight consecutive games, winning their last game in September. Following a win over the UConn Huskies, the Black Knights are 20-point favorites.
The Black Knights are looking for their second consecutive victory
This is the Black Knights' fifth win of the season and their second straight win. The Army Black Knights defeated the UConn Huskies 34-17 last week despite passing for zero yards. A total of 320 rushing yards were gained by the Black Knights, including 124 rushing yards and one touchdown by Braheam Murphy. Against the Huskies, nine different players contributed to the running game. UConn accumulated 370 yards, 116 through the air and 254 on the ground, but the Black Knights forced two fumbles. With a 4-0 record against the Huskies, the Black Knights lead the all-time series.
Army's total offense this season is ranked 71st, averaging 384.4 yards per game and 6.09 yards per play. Cade Ballard, Jemel Jones, and Tyhier Tyler alternate as quarterbacks for the Black Knights because of their playstyle. This season, Ballard leads the team in passing with 335 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed for 172 yards and one touchdown. With 500 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, Tyler dominates the team on the ground. With 435 yards and two touchdowns, Tyson Riley is the next most prolific rusher. Leo Lowin leads the defense in tackles (81) and sacks (3). Two interceptions and a fumble have also been recorded by Lowin. This season, Marquel Broughton has recorded three interceptions, 44 solo tackles, one forced fumble, and five pass defenses.
The Minutemen hope to win one more game this season
With a huge upset over the Black Knights, the UMass Minutemen look to earn one last victory of the season. Although the Minutemen have yet to beat Army, this time around it will be challenging because the Black Knights are 20-point favorites. Last week, the Minutemen lost 20-3 to the Texas A&M Aggies while gaining just 55 yards in the air and 113 yards on the ground. In total, they allowed 404 yards, 191 passing yards, and 213 rushing yards. Brady Olsent threw for 55 yards and Kay'Ron Adams ran for 58 yards.
UMass's total offense ranks 129th, averaging 268.5 yards per game and 3.99 yards per play. Under center, Olsen threw for 646 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing 49.6% of his passes for five yards per attempt. With 526 yards and three touchdowns, Ellis Merriweather leads the rushing game. On 26 receptions, George Johnson III has 364 yards and one touchdown. With 367.7 yards per game and 6.03 yards per play, the total defense ranks 57th. Cushnie has recorded 5.5 sacks so far this season. Cushnie has also made 23 solo tackles. With three interceptions, Jordan Mahoney leads the team. Additionally, Mahoney has made 26 solo tackles, forced two fumbles, and defended five passes.
The UMass Minutemen have struggled on offense and defense, so I expect the Army Black Knights to expose that and score. A unique aspect of the Black Knights' play style is their style of play. Their quarterbacks and running backs rely heavily on the run game. They ran for 320 yards in their last game using nine different players and scored 34 points, so their running offense is effective. Since the Minutemen allow 182.6 rushing yards per game, the Army offense could have a field day against UMass. As Lowin and Broughton defend, the Minutemen will also have difficulty scoring. Take the Army.
With a power ranking of 93, Army is ranked #74 in offense (scoring an average of 27.22 per game), #60 in defense (allowing an average of 25.44 points to be scored against them per game) and are 4-6 (5-5 ATS) this season.
UMass Minutemen has a power ranking of 129 and are #130 for offense (scoring an average of 14.00 per game), #108 for defense (giving up an average of 25.44 points per game) and 1-10 (5-6 ATS) overall. Army went 0-3 (1-1 ATS) in their last 3 matchups against UMass.
