The Dallas Stars, a professional ice hockey team, are a prominent entity in the National Hockey League (NHL), competing as part of the Central Division in the Western Conference. Originally known as the Minnesota North Stars, established in 1967 during the NHL expansion, the team was originally based in Bloomington, Minnesota. However, prior to the 1978-79 NHL season, the franchise merged with the Cleveland Barons after receiving special permission due to financial struggles. Later on, in the 1993-94 NHL season, the team relocated to Dallas and rebranded themselves as the Dallas Stars. Initially playing at Reunion Arena in downtown Dallas, they moved less than 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the American Airlines Center in the Victory Park neighborhood in 2001. The American Airlines Center is a shared arena with the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
